Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is an entry in the Strangereal universe of the Ace Combat. The game follows a pilot named Trigger during a conflict between Osea and Erusea.
Developed by Project Aces and released in 2019, this game helped revive the Ace Combat series after a dormant period of about 5 years. The game was first released for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, followed by Microsoft Windows. A port for the Nintendo Switch is slated to release in July of 2024.
Tropes used in Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown include:
- Ace Pilot: Mihaly is one for Erusea, and Trigger becomes one for Osea.
- Airborne Aircraft Carrier: Arsenal Birds, giant propeller aircraft that can launch a number of drones.
- Ax Crazy: Captain Torres, supported by the crew of the Alicorn.
- Big Freaking Gun: Stonehenge, a network of artillery designed for shooting down asteroids, plays a big role.
- Cool Submarine: The Submarine Aircraft Cruiser Alicorn.
- Cool Plane: Most of the aircraft, by virtue of being an arcade combat flight sim.
- Crossover: Has one with Top Gun: Maverick via a DLC, allowing some of the planes from that movie to be played.
- Improbable Aiming Skills: Captain Torres has this when it comes to naval artillery.
- I Surrender, Suckers: Captain Torres does this to buy him enough time to launch one final shell.
- Insane Admiral: Captain Torres as captain of the Alicorn.
- Memetic Mutation: This game is the source of the JPEG dog meme.
- Prison Episode: Trigger is sent to a penal airbase.
- Space Elevator: One plays a major role in the plot of the story.
- Team Killer: Trigger is accused of this. AWACS Bandog actually does it.
- Unfriendly Fire: AWACS Bandog tricks Count into killing Fullband by identifying him as an enemy aircraft.
