A Simple Favor is a 2018 comedy-mystery-thriller film directed by Paul Feig, based on a novel by Darcey Bell, starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively.
Stephanie, a single mom and vlogger, becomes fast and unlikely friends with a woman named Emily. Emily seems to have it all: a great husband, great kid, great job, great house, and even great clothes. But not all is well. Emily disappears after asking Stephanie for a simple favor: to pick her son up from school. Stephanie's personal investigation into the disappearance of her friend takes her through numerous twists and turns that lead her to a dark secret.
Tropes used in A Simple Favor include:
- Amateur Sleuth: Stephanie. No longer an amateur at the end since she turns it into a business.
- Brother-Sister Incest: Stephanie and her half-brother.
- Comforting the Widow: Stephanie to Sean. Emily is not amused.
- Consummate Liar: Emily.
- Engineered Public Confession: How Emily is put away at the end.
- Rich Bitch: Downplayed trope. Emily is both rich and bitchy, but as she herself notes, her family is deep in debt, which is a major plot point.
