A Wand for Skitter/Trivia

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Trivia about A Wand for Skitter includes:

  • Anachronism Stew: Generally averted, but one of the older half-blood boys is implied to be a brony when he uses the Room of Requirement to create Ponyville -- more than fifteen years before My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic premiered.
  • Rouge Angles of Satin: The story is lightly sprinkled with word choice and spelling errors, and a few things that look like spell checker miscorrections, such as a reference to the Killing Curse that calls it the "Davao Kendra", and an instance of what is clearly supposed to be "Skrewts" becoming "Setscrews".
    • At several points ShayneT misspells "Scrivener", the last name of the girl into whose body Taylor was inserted, as "Scribner".
    • Also played with: Taylor's narration intermittently refers to Millicent Bulstrode as "Mildred" well into their second year, and it would appear to be an authorial error like "Scribner" above, until there's a point where Taylor actually addresses Millicent as "Mildred" and gets corrected; later Taylor corrects herself in the middle of an Inner Monologue.
  • Series Continuity Error: A few show up.
    • The story keeps flipflopping back and forth on whether or not Taylor knows who Batman is.
    • Only a few chapters after she mentions learning about a "lost talent" allowing wizards to speak to snakes, she is present when Harry talks with the basilisk for the first time and says she has never heard of such a thing.
    • The basilisk is initially described as male, but not long after their first few encounters with it, it suddenly becomes female for the rest of the story.
    • Although she was introduced to Hermione's parents through a magic mirror during Christmas of her first year, they all act like they're complete strangers when they meet in person at the start of the next summer. (Complete with some of the same introductory dialogue in each case.)
    • When fighting Cassius Worthington (and earlier), Taylor is very certain about the lethal possibilities of the tooth-growing spell. However, in a scene early in third year, quite a while later, Taylor is speculating about the possibilities, as though she had no experience with it.
    • In early third year, Taylor's narration is inconsistent about whether she's thirteen or fourteen.
  • Shout-Out:
    • While still trying to figure things out very early in the story, Taylor wonders if "Hogwarts letters" are like Death Notes.
    • Taylor compares her few attempts to fake a British accent to Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins.
    • Taylor's first impression of Dumbledore is "he looked like Gandalf". Then she wonders if The Lord of the Rings even exists in this universe.
    • While criticizing the name the Death Eaters use for themselves, Taylor notes that "Deadites" or "Death Bringers" would have been better.
    • While systematically taking apart Voldemort's failed strategies for taking over the Wizarding world, Taylor holds up Emperor Palpatine of Star Wars as a proper Dark Lord who knew what he was about.
    • "You wouldn't like me when I'm angry."
    • To Watchmen:

"I'm not trapped in here with you," I said. I stared at him. "You've trapped yourself in here with me."

    • Harry makes an explicit reference to The Tomorrow People when he contrasts apparition with his first accidental teleportation, and calls the latter "jaunting", like in the show.
    • There are repeated references to Batman. The story is inconsistent on whether or not Taylor knows who the character is.
    • Taylor compares the Crucible's book of recipes to creating a Wizarding equivalent to The Anarchist's Cookbook.
    • Her animagus form is a Dementor Wasp. In-universe it is as-yet undiscovered and she gives it this name, but in the real world was named as a Shout-Out to Harry Potter.
    • When she receives a potted moly plant as a Christmas gift from Neville, she blurts out, "Holy moly!"
    • To The Princess Bride in chapter 116:

"Even you can't face Voldemort," she said. "He's almost as good as Dumbledore."
"I can't beat him in a fair fight," I said. I looked at Harry. "But what's the first rule?"
"Never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line?" he asked.
I grinned.
"Yeah, and for today I'm the Sicilian."

    • The Death Eaters arranging to have a box containing Tracy's severed head delivered to Taylor may be a reference to the film Se7en, where a similar delivery is made to Detectives Mills and Somerset.
