Replacing fair use images with free ones

Hello,

Recently I had been going around replacing fair use images with freely licensed ones on commons. However the official policy is “ We usually prefer that image replacements get discussed and agreed upon before they're made” so I want to stop doing this before I continue, as well as to offer to undo the changes I have made so far if that is more appropriate.

I believe the following categories have the best potential for enrichment from Commons:

  • Category:Cult Actor: Mostly promotional photographs from the 70s or earlier that fell out of copyright, or contributor pics from the 2000s on.
  • Category:Videogame Systems: Especially home and portable consoles
  • Category:Creators: Especially for notable individuals or company logos

Replacing fair use images with free ones from Wikimedia commons has several advantages:

  • More cut and dry on what you can do with it.
  • Typically better provenance.
  • Some images are literally the same picture, but at a lower resolution and quality.. A free file is sometimes uploaded as a copyrighted one. Better to err on the side of caution of course, but still

There are however, some disadvantages as well.

  • If I do this en masse, it will create a lot of work for mods.
  • Creates many orphaned files.
  • Some times fair use images depict things that cannot be captured in a freely licensed image, potentially making no free image a suitable replacement.
  • Images direct from commons aren’t resized per style guide.
  • For some pages like Adam West, there’s no clear cut alternative I can find on commons that is strictly better, though File:Adam West Batman 1966.jpg may be appropriate given the current caption.

All-The-Tropers who are familiar with Wikidata may wish to weigh in at d:wikidata:property proposal/All the Tropes identifier. For those unfamiliar with Wikidata, this Flow topic is provided for discussion; in a nutshell, it is a database organised by the Wikimedia Foundation, the steward organisation of Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons and many other projects, to catalogue all of human knowledge. That includes tropes and websites that themselves catalogue tropes, so the linked proposal is an internal document that seeks to make it easier to link concepts to pages on All The Tropes (TV Tropes has had a similar successful proposal in the past). The only effect anticipated on ATT might be greater traffic.

That's good to hear. I left a comment on the page you linked.

@Robkelk@Looney Toons@Labster As fellow site founders, would you care to comment further?

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Commented on the thread at Wikidata.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Likewise.

I have noticed that many Trope pages links to English Wikipedia. In cases where no articles exists on English Wikipedia could it be possibly to link to Wikidata instead?

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Feel free do do so.

IRC, Discord, Reddit, Twitter, and NNTP

You have links for IRC, Discord, Reddit, and Twitter. Why not also add NNTP? Some of us are using NNTP, and I might be willing to add a newsgroup to my own NNTP server for All The Tropes, although it would probably be better to be hosted by Miraheze instead, I think.

(Also, why does it specify "false" as the title for the new topic by default?)

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

The "false" thing seems to be a backend glitch.

As for that newsgroup, link me to this when it's ready and let's see where it goes if you decide to donate your bandwidth towards that end.. If it's a good place for tropers to gather, I'll be willing to put adding it our social networks up for consideration.

Our Discord is run by fans with our blessing, don't see why a fan newsgroup wouldn't be worth considering.

@Labster @Looney Toons

My newsgroup-fu is really weak, can't even remember the last time I looked at one, either of you gentlemen want to give this a whirl? Have to admit I have very little idea what I doing despite using the Pan newsgroup reader.

I haven't made use of UseNet is at least a decade, because my current ISP doesn't host it, and I didn't want to pay for access through a web-based provider. In any case I won't have time to look at this until I get off work, and not even right away then.

Zzo38 (talkcontribs)

Access to Usenet is not required to access this server, since it is a independent NNTP server. (Even if you do need access to Usenet for other reasons, there are some free ones.)

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

Fair enough, I have no objection.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

The only reason I could see for keeping it is that it highlights new pages created by tropers who are not yet autopatrolled - but we can get the same information from the Recent Changes page.

No objections to either deleting or keeping the section.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

No further comments either way after two more days; I'm making the change.
