"If the original language does not use the Latin alphabet (A-Z), the English-language marketing name should be used instead. Only if there is no English-language marketing name should the title be transliterated to the English equivalent."

What if it was brought to the English market multiple times under different names? For example, I wanted to make a new works page for 古見さんは、コミュ症です。 (Hepburn Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu.) which is variously called Komi Can't Communicate, Miss Komi is Bad at Communication, and Komi-san Has Trouble Communicating depending on the publisher. Which should I use?

Other discussion, albeit seemingly not about cross-script titles: topic:T9rptsujfhotdm6q

If Wikipedia chose a name, use that one.

Otherwise, follow the same principle as the page you linked to - use the one in your market, and create redirects for the others. If there's more than one name in use in your market, flip a coin.

Alright, I just did the kanji/kana title as a redirect for now and will do the others later, and the main page is now Komi Can't Communicate.

We generally don't bother with kanji/katakana redirects because our userbase is almost exclusively English speakers with Latin keyboards -- in fact, I suspect the one you created is the only one we now have. You needn't bother with the effort in the future.

This page needs...

... more information on actually writing the text of the page, along the lines of:

  • Several/many brisk paragraphs are better than one solid block of text.
  • "Voice": breezy and informal, not academic, but not in the first person either.
  • Proper handling of work titles: double quotes for short stories, songs, episode names, etc.; italics on titles of books, movies, albums, TV shows.

I'm sure there are more -- I know they're scattered all over the place in other ATT: pages; we need to consolidate them so we can point users at them easily.

Okay, okay... New section "The Basics", with everything listed above and a reminder that all-caps means "shouting" on the 'net.

Should anything else go in that section?

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Let me think on it. I'm sure there's something useful I didn't put in that first post that isn't occurring to me at the moment.

And whaddaya know? In the last couple months, there were things that weren't occurring to me...
