An Astronomical Alphabetacy

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

This is a Sims 2 Alphabetacy written by imxplosion. The story is hosted on LiveJournal. Can be read here.

The story begins when the alien founder(ess) Lucine Hollinter is kicked out of her father (Pyxis)'s spaceship for refusing to probe sims. She lands in the empty neighbourhood of Astra Villa, where she settles down and begins an alphabetacy.

Tropes used in An Astronomical Alphabetacy include:
  • Abusive Alien Parents: Parent, really. For some reason Pyxis doesn't get any Father's Day gifts...
  • Absurdly Youthful Mother: Soleil (as well as Pyxis) never ages in the story, and has already outlived one of her children.
  • Alphabetacy
  • Alphabetical Theme Naming: Each generation is assigned a letter and all sims born into the main line of the family are given astronomy/astrology themed names starting with that letter.
  • Angsty Surviving Twin: Bee, after Betria is killed in a car crash.
  • Arranged Marriage: Soleil and Pyxis; apparently it's the custom on Terra Loca, their home planet.
    • Pyxis tries to arrange one for Jet, only Jet's gay.
  • Author Avatar: The author's simself appears in Chapter 12 and on to give advice to characters and whatnot.
    • She is also cameo-ed in Chapter 14 as a security guard.
  • Back from the Dead:
    • Artemis brings her mother back from the dead, after making a promise to the Grim Reaper.
    • Bellatrix brings her older sister, Betria, back from the dead using a spell.
  • Backstory: here.
  • Bi the Way: Bee is bisexual, though story-wise he's only been shown dating girls.
    • Chapter 9 has him stating that he "swings both ways."
  • Bus Crash: Poor, poor Betria.
  • Constructed World: Astra Villa isn't a real place, and as it's a story is told using The Sims 2, it's literally constructed.
  • Crowning Moment of Heartwarming: When Andy reunites with her daughter Isis. This reader went 'SQUEE!'
    • And don't forget when Andy lets Jet stay with her.
  • Dance of Romance: Bellatrix & Magnus, in Chapter 17a.
  • Deal with the Devil: Artemis makes a deal with the Grim Reaper to save her mother's life.
  • Don't Go in The Woods: At Alan & Delphie's wedding Alyss, Bellatrix, Cora, and Betria get bored and decide to go play in the woods. Betria is very nearly attacked by a werewolf, which results in the girls quickly running back to the reception/wedding party.
  • Elevator Escape: spoiler: The B-kids escape from some security guards using a lame distraction and an elevator after they are caught flying a hospital helicopter.
  • Everyone Went to School Together
  • Follow in My Footsteps: Pyxis expects all of his children to follow in his footsteps. When he doesn't get his way, he simply throws them out of the house (or on one occasion, a spaceship).
  • Functional Magic: Witches in the story can cast spells.
  • Generational Saga
  • Give Him a Normal Life: Or her, in this case.Soleil gives up her daughter, Hydra, in hopes of giving her a better life.
  • Happily Married: Most of the couples in the story end up as this.
  • High School Sweethearts: Artemis & Orlando
  • Homosexual Reproduction: Ginger and Cora somehow manage to conceive a child despite the fact that they're both female.
  • Human Aliens: Other than green skin and pointy ears, all aliens in the story look/act like regular sims.
    • Not all of them. * coughPyxiscough*
      • He just acts like a homophobic jackass.
      • But do any other characters? No.
  • I Have No Son: Pyxis kicks his son Jet out of the house upon finding out Jet is gay.
  • I Just Write the Thing: The sims generally decide what happens in the story.
  • Interspecies Romance:
    • Lucine and Robi, since Lucine is an alien and Robi's a regular sim.
      • Also applies to all of the A-kids (who are half-alien) who had/have boyfriends/girlfriends/spouses, as well as some of the B-kids.
    • Bee (part-alien) and Pomona (werewolf)
      • NOT ANYMORE. Bitch. * fume*
      • She deserved it. So much.
  • It's Always Spring: The weather never changes in Astra Villa, it's always sunny and bright.
  • Long-Lost Relative: Andy, who was kidnapped as a baby, is reunited with her sister, Artemis, when they meet at High School.
  • Look Behind You!: The B-kids use this to distract the security guards after being caught flying a hospital helicopter.
  • Machinomic
  • Manipulative Bastard: Pyxis.
  • Multigenerational Household: The Hollinters have a multigenerational household to an extent.
  • No Going Steady: Andy has a reputation for sleeping with lots of guys, all of which she never dates again.
  • No One Could Survive That: Pomona ran over Betria and most people knew she wasn't actually dead.
  • Pointy Ears: Many members of the Hollinter family have them.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name:
    • Artlandis (Artemis/Orlando)
    • Delphan (Delphie/Alan)
    • Gingora (Ginger/Cora)
    • Magnatrix (Bellatrix/Magnus)
  • Psychic Powers: Bellatrix has 'song visions', though she hasn't yet been able to figure what they mean.
  • Raised by Grandparents: Andy was raised by Pyxis and Soleil (her grandparents) after Pyxis kidnaps her.
  • Runaway Bride: Or groom, rather. Mitch panics and leaves Arista at the altar, just after confessing that he knocked up her sister, Andy.
  • Soap Opera Disease: At the end of Chapter 14 it is revealed that one of thew twins (Belinda) has a blood condition, though no one has been able to figure out what it is.
  • That's What She Said: Used by Andy at Alan's wedding reception.
  • They All Said We Never Could Be Happy: Bee & Pomona. Subverted though, because Betria was right all along about Pomona.
  • Travelling At the Speed of Plot: Andy travels from Moon Islands to Astra Villa, which is described as far away, in one night.
    • Moon Islands is a plane ride away and characters are described taking planes, so the traveling-in-one-night thing is plausible.
    • Artemis manages to to do the same in a later chapter, but the other way around.
  • Unto Us a Son and Daughter Are Born:
    • Betelgeuse (Bee) & Betria
    • Belinda & Bryan
  • What Does She See in Him?: Readers will never be able to figure out what Soleil sees in Pyxis.
  • Woman Scorned: Arista after/when she finds out that her fiance has been cheating on her with her sister, Andy, at her wedding.
    • Trying to hurt a newborn baby really doesn't make her sympathetic as one. Even if it's Andy and Mitch's baby.
  • Write Who You Know: The author writes both herself and her LJ friends into the story, this can be seen in Chapter 12 and on.
  • You ALL Share My Story: Many of the character's plots are interwoven together.
