Batman: Arkham Knight

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Cry out to save tomorrow; it's not too late. Your heavy heart will follow; you to the grave.
How can the world know fear — true dread — when there is you? A stalwart knight, ever ready to slay monsters. Fear isn’t true biology, Batman. It’s more than instinct. True fear is the absence of hope. And hope is the spread wings of a bat, shining in the clouds.
— Jonathan Crane, the Scarecrow

Batman: Arkham Knight is an action-adventure video game developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One video game consoles, and Microsoft Windows. Based on the DC Comics superhero Batman, it is the successor to Batman: Arkham Origins, and the fourth main installment in the Batman: Arkham series, following Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City.

Scarecrow has returned with a new type of his fear toxin, one he tests on a diner, making several of people go berserk, see each other as monsters, and pierce themselves apart. He threatens to do this to the entire city, and warns them to leave by hijacking television broadcasts. Soon almost the entire population tries to leave Gotham. Almost, because criminals like Penguin, Two-Face and Riddler stay and take advantage of the panic.

While trying to find clues about how Scarecrow plans to detonate a chemical weapon on Gotham, Batman finds Poison Ivy, which tells him Scarecrow had made an alliance between all of Gotham's most wanted, with one common objective in mind: kill the Batman.

Tropes used in Batman: Arkham Knight include:
  • 100% Completion: This is the only way to get the complete Knightfall Protocol ending. That includes all Riddler trophies and side missions.
  • Back from the Dead: Ra's al Ghul is the main villain of the "Shadow War" side mission, put on life support.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Even though Scarecrow got sent to GCPD, he still revealed Batman's secret identity to the world and made Batman start the Knightfall Protocol, which depending on your interpretation of the ending culminates in Bruce and Alfred comitting suicide to protect their allies..
  • Batman Grabs a Gun: Batman is forced to deploy the Batmobile as a tank with an actual anti-tank gun because he has to fight unmanned drones with lethal weapons. He never had to go that far in the previous games.
  • Big Bad: Scarecrow is the leader between a group of antagonists seeking to kill Batman, including the titular Arkham Knight.
  • Blatant Lies: Just after trying to leave Batman behind using her vines, Ivy says "he just did had to ask" for her to follow him.
  • Bloodier and Gorier: Since it is the first Arkham game rated M, there has been an increase of blood.
  • Broken Bridge: While technically all of Gotham City is accessible, areas you need to access by vehicle are blocked at points in the plot until you find the way to fix (or rather lower in most cases) the bridges, as the city is divided into three islands and two are blocked off early on.
  • Canon Foreigner: Warden Ranken, the villain of "Beneath the Surface" originated from the game.
  • Circus of Fear: "The Perfect Crime" had Professor Pyg of the Circus of Strange taking people from his visits and turning them into Dollotrons.
  • Closed Circle: All of the environments of Gotham City are deliberately closed off to entry or exit, or Scarecrow threatens to Fear Gas everyone inside. This keeps people like Batman and the villains in, and any help from the outside out.
  • Darker and Edgier: Since Scarecrow is the main villain and a few frightening villains such as Pyg and Man-Bat were in the side missions, this goes to that route.
  • The Dragon: Deathstroke is the commander of the Arkham Knight's forces and much, much more able in physical combat, thanks to being an army veteran.
  • Dramatic Unmask:
    • Scarecrow was able to remove Batman's cowl in front of the whole world.
    • In "Friend In Need", Batman removes his cowl to Hush.
  • Driven to Suicide: Henry Adams kills himself after killing off the three other people with Joker blood.
  • Exposed to the Elements: Ivy walks around wearing a coat and a bikini which does nothing to cover her legs or the front of her body, despite the weather being cold and rainy. It is justified by her inhuman nature.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Scarecrow has a deep voice in this game.
  • Famous Last Words:
    • "Nature always wins." - Poison Ivy as she disintegrates into pollen.
    • "Detective? Proud... of you." - Ra's al Ghul in the good ending of "Shadow War".
  • Follow the White Rabbit: The Mad Hatter says this word-for-word in the final part of "Wonderland".
  • Golden Ending: The complete Knightfall Protocol ending can be unlocked by doing all of the side missions.
  • Grand Finale: Of the Arkham series.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Implied to be the reason of why Poison Ivy is unaffected by the fear toxin: she is not human enough to feel fear like normal humans do.
  • Halloween Episode: The game takes place on Halloween night.
  • Hallucinations:
    • The Joker is still dead but he appears in Batman's mind throughout the game.
    • Batman had one of Barbara Gordon killing herself.
  • Heel Face Turn:
    • Jason Todd/Arkham Knight redeemed himself to help Batman stop Scarecrow.
    • Poison Ivy redeemed herself to help Batman dissipate fear toxin.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Scarecrow gets injected with his own fear toxin before getting sent to GCPD.
  • Jump Scare:
    • While gliding around Miagani Island, Man-Bat shows up and roars at Batman before flying away.
    • After first encountering Man-Bat, the Joker does this to Batman while gliding.
    • Man-Bat does one yet again if the player finished "Shadow of the Bat" and played this game on Halloween.
  • Multiple Endings:
    • "Shadow War" ends with either Batman resurrecting Ra's or destroying his life support.
    • "Heir to the Cowl" ends with either Azrael leaving the Clock Tower or getting sent to GCPD.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Dr. Kirk Langstrom yells "What have I done" in his chamber knowing that his wife Francine died.
  • New Game+: Finishing the story can unlock this for a second playthrough. It will carry over Riddler trophies and upgrades.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: The Mad Hatter in "Wonderland" speaks entirely in rhyme. In an audio tape, he rhymed along with Aaron Cash and tricked Aaron into rhyming along with him.
  • Take Over the City: Ivy mentions that Scarecrow's plan involves taking over Gotham, but not much more than that.
  • The Reveal: The Arkham Knight happens to be Jason Todd, who was presumed deceased.
  • Sidequest: The Most Wanted missions are secondary to the main story and show a wide array of villains.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Riddler introduces himself as Batman's "most feared nemesis". Mind you, the player has the option to completely ignore his plans during the previous games, implying Batman doesn't see him as that much of a threat or even remotely near the scale of a lot of other villains.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Thanks to being just a figment of Bruce's mind given form by the Fear Toxin, whatever the hallucination of the Joker speaks about the real deal is pretty suspicious and product of Bruce's own paranoia and/or theories. By example, it says it would have tried harder in his crimes against Bruce if he knew the billionaire was Batman.
  • Villainous Friendship: Even despite Harley going along with Scarecrow imprisoning Ivy, Pamela still calls her "poor", implying pity.
  • Villain Song: The Joker sings "Look Who's Laughing Now" during the Johnny Charisma level.
  • Wide Open Sandbox: All of Gotham City is up for exploration in this game.
  • Wild Card: Poison Ivy isn't interested in the Scarecrow's plan to kill Batman but isn't interested in helping humans too.
  • You're Insane!: Batman says this to Pyg.
