• Crowning Moment of Heartwarming: This scene, where Gordon chews out Batman for abandoning Gotham, and Batman removes his cowl to regain Gordon's trust. Gordon doesn't look and instead tells him to put it back on.
• Complete Monster: The Joker. Destroying whats left of a wrecked and desolated Gotham City being kind of redundant, he decides that for his grand ultimate master plan he'll care less about the scale and just try something thats absolutely fucked up- murder all the new born babies to finish off Gotham's fragile spirit. Its one of his most evil and sick schemes to date.
  • Scarecrow finds himself desperate and alone and having troubkle surviving this horrid dystopia until, over protest from the Huntress, a kindly pastor takes him into his refugee camp. How does Scarecrow thank him? Try and turn the entire camp against each other.
• Harsher in Hindsight: Try reading this storyline again after Hurricane Katrina.
• Tear Jerker: The death of Jim Gordon's wife, Sarah, at the hands of the Joker. Joker has a large number of infants held hostage. Sarah rushes in with a gun, and Joker tosses one of the babies at her, forcing her to drop her gun to save it. No points for guessing what he does once she's unarmed. Gordon gets the news outside - he rants tearfully about how the Joker has gone too far and seriously considers killing him, but after shooting him in the knee, chooses law over anarchy and walks away. And if him weeping on the steps as Batman holds him steady doesn't get to you, then the scene of him spending the New Year alone, singing Auld Lang Syne dry-eyed over Sarah's grave definitely will.
  • In the novelisation, Batman's last scene: visiting his parents' grave and the remains of quake-ravaged Wayne Manor: "I'm home."
• What an Idiot!: Seriously, Freeze. Trying to take on Superman?
  • Maybe being one of the few Batman enemies with superpowers gives him a confidence boost about facing superpowered heroes?
