Belisarius Series/Awesome

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • So many. The duel between Rana Sanga and Valentinian may be the best, though.
    • To lampshade that with some details; Rana Sanga is one of the two greatest warriors in all of India. He's well over six feet tall, strong enough to literally cut an armored man in half -- vertically -- and unlike most men that powerful is also as fast as he is strong. Valentinian is a skinny weasel of a man pehaps five and a half feet tall at most. Rana Sanga ends the duel by breaking Valentinian's sword and then cracking his skull... but Valentinian lasted three hours before finally going down for the count, vs. a man who has only once before in his life had a solo combat that lasted longer than three minutes. Indeed, had Valentinian not made one single mistake at the end he would have won, because Rana Sanga was busy bleeding out from a leg wound Valentinian had just inflicted shortly before Sanga finally managed to disarm him.
  • The wedding between Shakuntala and Raghunath Rao.
  • Belisarius' escape from the Malwa capital in book 2. He starts the evening off alone, unarmored, unarmed except for a tiny pocketknife normally used for sharpening ink quills, and having just jumped into the middle of the river off a barge full of elite Malwa assassins. The entire capital city and all the troops in it are alerted and on a full-scale manhunt for him, and while Belisarius' soldiers and friends had some prepared escape plans for themselves the Malwa ambush on him was last-minute, so he has to improvise his own escape - not just from the city of Kausambi, but the entire Malwa Empire. By the end of the night Belisarius will be leaving the city fully armed and armored in the gear of a Ye-Tai imperial bodyguard while the literally thousands of men searching all of Kausambi for him never got close. By several days later, several of the Malwa imperial couriers sent racing to beat Belisarius to the coast will be dead at his hand and he'll have all of their horses and supplies. By the end of the month, Malwa's single greatest cavalry commander leading five hundred of their most elite cavalry in a dogged pursuit of Belisarius will have been successfully decoyed into going literally hundreds of miles off his trail while he casually rides to a seaport and charters a ship to Axum.
    • And just to put a capstone on this truly epic feat of escape and evasion, Belisarius actually made it back to Axum before his men did.
  • Honestly, this series has so much awesomeness that one can't pick specific moments that easily.
