  • Actor Allusion: Kristen Chenoweth was cast in this film specifically because Nicole Kidman saw her on Broadway as Glinda in Wicked, and convinced Nora Ephron to add a part for her to the film.
  • The Cameo: Amy Sedaris as Gladys Kravitz. Not to mention a number of well-known actresses appearing briefly in the "audition" montages trying to wiggle their noses like Elizabeth Montgomery.

  • Mythology Gags:
    • Also an Actor Allusion at one remove: Aunt Clara offers Isabel "Lorna Doone" cookies shortly before disappearing. Marion Lorne, the TV show's Aunt Clara, did commercials for Lorna Doones.
    • When Jack objects that Uncle Arthur is a bad driver, Arthur breezily announces that it wasn't him. The exchange references an episode of Bewitched in which Paul Lynde appeared as a driving instructor before being cast as Uncle Arthur.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The sequence where Jack and Isabel dance and play in the soundstage after hours is oddly reminiscent of a similar sequence in Singin' in the Rain.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The role of Jack was originally intended for Jim Carrey.
    • Iris was originally written as a normal human, but Shirley MacLaine mentioned that she'd always wanted to play a witch, so...
