BioShock Infinite/Tear Jerker

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • As the duo leave Columbia, Elizabeth quickly notices that the co-ordinates the ship is heading for are for New York, not Paris. The prompts Booker to come clean and admit that he isn't taking her to Paris like she wanted, reducing the poor girl to tears...
    • ...until you realise that she was faking it to lure Booker into a false sense of security so she can clock him in the face with the wrench.
  • When the Songbird first searches for Elizabeth, Elizabeth tearfully asks Booker to promise something for her. Booker promises he'll deal with the Songbird, but that's not what Elizabeth wants. In a heartbreaking moment, she puts Booker's hand around her throat and begs him to promise to kill her before the Songbird can have her. Booker flatly states that it'll never come to that.
  • After gaining entry to Comstock House, Songbird suddenly appears and tosses Booker through a window a couple of hundred feet away. Just before the beast can deliver the killing blow, a tearful Elizabeth stops it by begging it to take her back to her tower, sparing Booker. We are then treated to a close up of Elizabeth as she is carried off, tears in her eyes, mascara running down her cheeks, and reaching her hand out to Booker. It's here we realise just how close to Songbird she was in spite of the relationship's somewhat abusive nature, especially when Songbird's eyes turn from red to green.
  • The death of Songbird. Transported to the underwater city of Rapture via a tear, Songbird starts writhing in pain due to the the water pressure, with Elizabeth right there to comfort him until he finally succumbs, dies, and slowly sinks to the ocean depths. You'll notice that just before he dies, his eyes turn green, signifying he is content, meaning he gets a peaceful death at the very least. Booker then gives Elizabeth a very sombre "I'm sorry" right after.
  • The revelation that Elizabeth is actually Anna Dewitt, Booker's daughter. Booker tries to retrieve his infant daughter from Comstock before he escapes through the tear, but she doesn't make it all the through, and loses her pinkie as a result. That is when Booker realises who Elizabeth really is, and you can hear his voice trembling as he begins to process the whole thing.
  • As Booker enters the lighthouse one last time for his Heroic Sacrifice, you notice that the first Elizabeth copy he sees isn't wearing the brooch you picked for her. That's not our Elizabeth (i.e. the one who accompanied us throughout the game). That means that when Booker tells her that killing Comstock is the only way he can undo what he did to her, that was not only the last time we see her in the game, but it's also Booker's last words to his daughter.
  • Then there's Booker's death itself; surrounded by multiple Elizabeth copies, he realises that he is both Booker Dewitt and Zachary Comstock. Two Elizabeth copies drown him upon this revelation, and he doesn't even try to fight them off.
