The Blog Cast is a Blog Series made by ZBF. It is essentially an Anime Parody fanfic posted in blogs on Gamespot.

Tropes used in Blog Cast include:


  • Abusive Parent: Hank's father, in all sorts of ways.
    • Miyu's mother isn't much better. She treats her daughter as a tool for making money and cares nothing about her safety.
  • The Ace: Power in Evolution. All his fights now tend to end in one or two attacks, is now considered the third strongest character in the series and tends to be able to deliver more effective speeches than his younger self. This is, however, balanced by him still being somewhat a Butt Monkey, his occasional stupidity and the fact that Miyu has taken over as more the main character than Power. Similarly justified considering Power has already gone through a major growth as a character in the previous season.
  • Adorkable: Power. One instance involves him proposing... with Simon's proposal to Nia from Gurren Lagann... and STILL getting a yes.
  • Adult Child: Power, after Season 2.
  • Affably Evil: Magnesteel.
  • Alliterative Name: Shinobu Shimizu, Miyu Matsumoto.
  • All There in the Manual: Episodes tend to have an afterwards explaining little details, while major events, like movies and season finales, are given follow up blogs.
  • Anyone Can Die: You might have expected Glider's death and possibly even Onsokumaru's. However, Kaede's and Water Bug's come almost out of nowhere.
  • Arc Words: Lemmy's Warning throughout most of Season 3 and part of Season 4. The Double Roads throughout the first series.
  • Ascended Extra: Glider and Lai. Glider was originally a movie only character. However, by the end of season 2, he was made a main character. Lai, on the other hand, was a Girl of the Week character from mini-filler. Later, she reappeared as the first fake F-Kira.
    • Gold Psy to some extent as well, given he was mentioned off handly in the first season. By the end of Season 2, he was revealed to be the Big Bad.
  • Badass Longcoat: Invoked by Power. He specifically requested Rei make him a longcoat just so he'd look cooler.
    • No Shirt, Long Jacket: In the final battle with Frank, and in Rewrite, Power goes without the shirt. However, he quickly loses the coat.
  • Berserk Button: Don't mess with Power's friends. It never ends well.
    • Being Frank seems to be everyone's beserker button after the whole incident with Shinobu's child.
    • An interesting, out-of-universe one. ZBF has made it quite clear he hates people calling others talentless and using that as an excuse why they're bad at what they do. He even has started advertising himself as having no talent for writing whatsoever. See Hard Work Hardly Works below to see how much it's averted.
  • Beauty, Brains, and Brawn: The main trio in Evolution is a mixed gender version. Miyu (Beauty), Kenji (Brains) and Power (Brawn).
  • Beyond the Impossible: It's a written series and it STILL has openings, endings and insert songs!
    • In-Universe, Power lost his left arm and had it replaced with Automail twice, not counting the times his Automail was broken. He lost his organic left arm twice. Other characters note the impossibility of this happening.
  • Big Good / Big Bad: Gold Psy plays both roles. He starts off as the Big Bad, presenting Power with all his enemies, however, it's revealed he's doing this for a reason. See Break the Cutie below.
  • Boobs of Steel: Shinobu.
  • Break the Cutie: The whole reason for Gold Psy's actions were to cause this for Power, in order for him to move on and grow to be the man he's meant to be; The Double Road Alchemist.
  • Bunny Ears Lawyer: Power. Sure, he's a huge Otaku and spends most of his time making Gurren Lagann reference, but when he gets in a fight, he weaponizes said references.
  • Butt Monkey: Power, Takeru and especially Frank.
  • Celeb Crush: Shikira has one on Zero Suzaku. This is also a reason why Frank wants both dead.
  • Character Title: Blog Cast is Daisuke's true name, making it a Double Meaning Title as well.
  • Chaotic Good: Power.
    • During a battle of wills with Frank, Power outright says he'd let a starving kid get away with stealing food. The reason he fights against Frank isn't because murder is a crime, but because murder hurts people.
  • The Chessmaster: Gold Psy and Yuko.
  • Cloning Blues: Daisuke, at first.
  • Compilation Movie: Rewrite, to some degree. New content is added, but the five movies are just abridged versions of the series.
  • Crossover: Had one with Anime World Chaos before the Season 1 Finale.
  • Composite Character: Hank in Rewrite is a combination of his main series self and Balthor.
  • Create Your Own Villain: Frank tried to play this against Power several times, saying it's HIS fault Frank turned to killing. Power, of course, ignores these, saying it was always Frank's CHOICE to become evil.
  • Dare to Be Badass: Power, to the WORLD, during the final battle with Frank. Frank acts as though everyone else in the world is nothing. Power fights this by making speeches to encourage his allies and just about everyone else in the world to fight Frank. What makes it better is that Frank absolutely hates the idea of someone younger being better than him. When Power starts copying his friend's fighting styles, he starts off with Todoroki's in the main series, and FINISHES with it in Rewrite. No questions that Power intends to make everyone more awesome.
  • Deconstruction: Frank is a huge deconstruction of butt-hurt fanboys. His hatred of Power and Daisuke for not being "true" cyborgs and clones is not shown as humorous insults but as racist ones. Him forcing the abortion of Shinobu's first child isn't shown as stopping a Jumping the Shark moment, but as what it actually is, killing a child. Season 4 takes this Up to Eleven, by showing just how far such a fan would go if they obtained a way to kill.
    • Rewrite takes it a step further, by pointing out the hypocrisy of people hating fans of anything because certain fans hate non-fans for not liking it, when non-fans hating fans for liking it is basically the same thing.
  • Darkest Hour: Episode 12 of the F-Kira Arc. Not only has Kaede been killed, but Power was sent into near catatonic shock for six months, Frank not only has taken over the world, but has people working with him and Daisuke, the only one able to work on the F-Kira Case, is being crushed by the emotions he hasn't been able to express. It is a very good thing Lemmy was born, otherwise F-Kira would have won!
  • Determinator: While most of the Blog Cast fits, Power deserves special mention. He has seen, multiple times, that in the future he won't be together with Tsuruya, and even knowing this, he STILL makes the greatest effort to stay together with her, even after escaping what he believed to be his death. To put it simply, he knew that in his future he wouldn't be together with Tsuruya, but loved her so much that he tried to defy destiny just to stay with her.
  • Doting Parent: Power whenever Lemmy is around.
  • Dying Alone: Kaede, to some extent. She was only able to see Power running up, and even then, it was a past version who disappeared seconds later.
    • Averted in the case of Frank. Power, Daisuke, Shinobu and Hayden are all with him until the end, precisely BECAUSE Power didn't want him to have to go through this.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: Kaede. After doing little in terms of fighting throughout the whole series, she steps up and fights Frank, AND scars his chest, while revealing him as F-Kira.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After four seasons of having people die around him, friends betraying him and losing the same body part twice, Power finally to end things on a happy note in Happily Ever After!
  • Embarrassing First Name: Glider's is Gilbert.
  • Emotion Suppression: Hank and Balthor. Hank repressed all his emotions, except dull hatred, due to his father's abuse. Balthor was hypnotized to never feel any emotion by the cult his parents were part of. However, both do eventually bring their emotions back.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Aisha will gladly kill for F-Kira, but questions his plan to cripple Todoroki.
  • Evil Is Hammy: About the only thing fun about reading Frank's lines are seeing how hammy they can get.
  • Evil Knockoff: Gold Psy's prefered form looks like an older, darker Power. Subverted. Gold Psy isn't evil to begin with.
  • Expy: ZBF admits to basing Miyu not just off of Kohane Tsuyuri, but also off of Amelia Pond!
  • Face Heel Turn: Hank.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death: Glider dies from a grenade shoved down his throat.
  • Fan Nickname: In-universe, Power calls Glider "Glidrunk" when he starts drinking.
  • Fantastic Racism: Frank is against Cyborgs and Clones. Or at least the kinds who aren't murderous monsters. After his defeat, most of the world follows his example.
  • Fate Worse Than Death: Two Librarians are given one early in the series when Daisuke traps their minds in his memories.
    • Frank gets a far worse one. Trapped within The Gate forever.
  • Five-Man Band: Two. For the first generation:

  • Five-Bad Band:
  • Foil: Frank to Power, Aisha to Shinobu and especially Balthor to Daisuke.
  • Foe Yay: Lai and Power, Lai and Daisuke and Shinobu and Aisha.
  • Foreshadowing: In a follow up to the Untold Stories special, ZBF mentioned that the closest person to Miyu's age was WaterBug, but he could never see them together due to how reckless WB was. Cue Episode 9 of Evolution, and we now have the reserved, alternate WaterBug; Kenji Mizubagu. Also, in REVOLUTION, the two ended up dating.
  • Getting Crap Past the Radar: Frank's last name is Fuchs. Power actually lampshades this.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Karame, after his Heel Face Turn.
  • The Good, the Bad, and The Evil: In Rewrite. The Blog Cast making the good, wanting to create peace while taking few to no lives. Hank and everyone under him in F-Kira making the bad, wanting to create peace through killing. And Frank making the Evil, wanting nothing more than to kill those he hates.
  • Grandfather Paradox: At the end of Season 1, it's revealed the original "Daisuke" is the son of his clone.
  • Graying Morality: Invoked by Gold Psy to get Power to stop holding back.
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: Averted! Power has little to no talent for fighting. However, his training allows his to defeat a massive powerhouse like Frank.
    • Averted harder in Rewrite, where talent is all Frank has going for him. Due to this, he is constantly pushing his body beyond what it can do, causing him much strain and eventually causes several blood vessels to pop.
  • Heel Face Turn: Daisuke, Herring, Todoroki, Jerrica, Kurosaki, Karame, Gold Psy
  • Heel Face Revolving Door: Lai. She first appears as an innocent girl, turns out to be an enemy, is won over by Power and Daisuke's kindness, only to turn evil again once she meets Frank, then resolves to help the Blog Cast before dying.
  • Heroes Want Redheads: Power had a crush on and is now married to Miki Hashiba.
  • Heroic BSOD: Power, twice. First when Daisuke disappeared, and later when Kaede died.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Glider, Onsokumaru, Kaede.
    • WaterBug's, big time! The ninth episode of Evolution has Power speculate that if WaterBug hadn't been killed by Balthor, Daisuke wouldn't have been able to defeat Balthor, and Power himself would have been mortally wounded defeating Balthor. Meaning WaterBug had to die, or Daisuke and Power would die taking down F-Kira.
  • Heroic Second Wind: Power, during his fight with Frank, both in the Main Series and Rewrite. In the main series, it's brought on by Gold Psy restoring his Automail, while in Rewrite, it's brought on by him simply refusing death as an option.
  • He's Back: Power in episode 13 of season 4.
  • Hypocrite: Frank. He complains about the Blog Cast having a Hive Mind, only to try and make everyone exactly like him.
    • Furthermore, in Rewrite, Frank hates the girls he blames his sister's death on for killing his sister for not liking a movie they do. Let's remember that Frank's reaction to this is to kill those who like things he doesn't, the same thing on the other side of the scale.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Power and Todoroki. Power and Miyu.
  • It's All About Me: FRANK! Literally everything he does in the series is solely to make things better for him. He kills Shinobu's child because he hates the idea of having a child young. His first use of the Death Note is to kill people in his class he doesn't like. Even in the end, he only killed himself because he was beaten by someone, questioning how HE could be beaten by anyone.
  • Kick the Dog: Towards the end of REVOLUTION, Frank slaps his pregnant fiance on the ground and spits on her, before ordering his last assassin to kill her.
  • Lack of Empathy: Frank, at his best. However, he doesn't stop at just him, but expects anything that isn't human, and eventually every other human in the world for that matter, to be the same way, otherwise they are evil and he should kill them.
    • Lai, to a certain extent. She'll gladly hypnotize anyone she can get her hands on, and wants nothing more than to make Daisuke her brainwashed lover, despite his being Happily Married to Shinobu. Having said that, she's still a saint when compared to Frank.
  • Lady in Red: Laila Red.
  • Lawful Good: Glider, "Daisuke".
  • Martyr Without a Cause: Power. He gets better each season, however.
    • The first episode of Evolution plays with this. It looks like Power will let himself get punched in the face to protect Miyu. However, the punch doesn't hurt him, but his attacker.
  • Mrs. Robinson: 39-year old Dawn Fuchs flirts with 21 year-old Power in Rewrite.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Jane Smith.
  • My Greatest Failure: Power has two. The deaths of Mayumi and Kaede.
    • Gold Psy himself has the deaths of his brother and the Lai and Shikira from his world.
  • My Name Is Inigo Montoya / Shut UP, Hannibal: When Frank asks Power who he is, saying he shouldn't exist, Power replies with this.

Power: I'm just me. Power. The first student of GoldPsy. The Double Road Alchemist. Creator of the Automail Break. Leader of the Blog Cast. And I'm also... *Smirks.* ...the guy that's gonna beat you!

  • Neutral Good: Daisuke, Shinobu and Kaede.
  • New Era Speech: Inverted! Frank makes speeches about how he's gonna change things to how they were when he was a child.
  • Never My Fault: Apparentally, killing someone's child is THEIR fault for conceiving the child in the first place, according to Frank. And that isn't even getting into the crimes he tried to justify as F-Kira.
  • Noodle Incident: One refered to as the "Banana Incident", involving getting Hashiba drunk...
  • Oblivious to Love: Power and Kaede were unaware the other had any feelings for them until Episode 11 of Season 4.
  • Older Sidekick: Played with. Daisuke was 17 physically before Power was, but was only made four years prior to the first season.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname / No Name Given: Power and Water Bug.
    • Taken to the extreme in Rewrite. While everyone else has parts of their names revealed, when Power delcares who he is, he doesn't even bother with his real name anymore, going solely by Power of the Double Roads, treating this as his full name. Water Bug, likewise, doesn't reveal his name, however, as opposed to Power, he doesn't consider it his REAL name.
    • WaterBug's has been revealed to be Kenji Mizubagu. Similarly, Power's has been revealed to be Power Hashiba. He changed his first name and took his wife's last name.
  • Otaku: Power. Daisuke to a lesser extent.
  • Patrick Stewart Speech: Played with. While Frank, a human himself, begins to believe humans need to be destroy for "failing", Power, a cyborg, tries to convince him using an example of this trope from FMA. It doesn't work, but what makes it interesting is that Power switches it up towards the end, explaining that not only are humans great, but they influence other races to be better as well.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Frank. Sure, he's known for smirking in psychotic glee, but unless under Lai's control, he never smiles out of genuine happiness.
  • Politically-Incorrect Villain: Frank, in every way imaginable.
  • Power Copying: Power does this all the time, copying the fighting styles of his friends and enemies.
  • Power Trio: Power, Daisuke and Shinobu after Kaede's death.
  • Precocious Crush: Miyu Matsumoto.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: The Automail Break.

Power: AUTO! MAIL! BREAK!!!

  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Power and Daisuke take turns as both. Usually Power is more wild and crazy, while Daisuke tries to stay mature and serious. However, the roles switch on the battlefield, where Daisuke fights more agressively while Power tends to take his time and think up new ways to defeat his opponent.
  • Robot Girl: Yume and Ai.
  • Sequel Hook: ZBF just refuses to end a season without some mystery for next season. Season 1 ended with Power trapped on the other side of the Gate and the question of who brought Magnesteel to life. Season 2 ended with the question of who Gold Psy was. Season 3 kept this question and raised another with Lemmy's Warning. And finally, despite the series ending, ZBF added in a mysterious figure running around with a Philosopher's Stone. However, ZBF has said this will be answered in the new series: Blog Cast Evolution.
  • She's All Grown Up: Miyabi during the F-Kira Arc.
    • Miyu in the first episode of Evolution, to Power's shock.
  • She's Got Legs: Jerrica.
  • Shout-Out: Many.
    • Glider eventually becomes a large shout out to Doctor Who. He travels through time, his sister's name is Sarah, his girlfriend's name is Jane Smith and his own middle name comes from the Tenth Doctor's actor David Tennant.
    • In one episode, after Daisuke punches Power too hard, we get this:

Power: Uh... Yume's mom has got it going on... She's all I want.... and I've waited for so long...

    • Rewrites 4 and 5 are filled with ones to Gurren Lagann, more so than the main series, but two stick out.
    • Power creating a blade on his arm from blood and shortly before that, Power utters this line:

Power: Because the Double Roads! *Runs towards Frank.* Are my! *Pulls his fist back.* SOOOOOUUUULLL!!!

  • Shrug of God: It's left to the reader if Gold Psy is Power's father or not.
  • Signature Move: Power's Automail Break.
  • Single-Stroke Battle: The final battle between Power and Frank ends this way in Rewrite, with both swinging to cut off the other's arms. Luckily for Power, who's blade was made from blood at this point, he had the longer blade due to the drawn out fight.
  • A Sinister Clue: Literally! F-Kira being left handed is what clued Power in on Lai not being the real F-Kira and Kaede on Frank being the real one.
    • Also, while not a full example, Power's left arm is the one that was taken when commited Human Transmutation.
  • Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome / Older Than They Look: One or the other with Lai. In her first appearance, when Power's still 17, the narration suggests she's the same age as him. In her second appearance, the narration suggests she's older than him by at least four years or so. Whether this is because Power simply didn't know her that well, or another case of him changing things up in the narration, is never explained.
    • Averted with Miyu in Evolution. Power is mentioned to have specifically have gone to six years after the last episode of Season 4.
  • Stealth Mentor: Gold Psy.
  • Stepford Smiler: Power in Season 2.
    • Miyu in the first episode of Evolution.
  • Stylistic Suck: The Frank special. Being told from Frank's point of view, the titles of the blogs and the time skips have more and more mistakes to reflect Frank's growing insanity and hatred at the way things played out. Exaggerated during the final battle, where all the indicators of time skips are in all capital letters followed by several exclamation points, as though they were shouted.
  • Talking the Monster to Death: Both Power and Frank seem to use this trope during their final battle. Frank keeps throwing out rants about how he's right and Power's wrong, trying to get Power to concede to dying. Power, on the other hand, tries to talk Frank into surrendering and ending the fight. When that fails, he starts to make speeches about how Frank is wrong. The one that ultimately wins is Power. Power's combination of this trope and Megaton Punch causes Frank to lose the will to live.
  • Team Dad: Onsokumaru to the First Generation, until Season 3. Daisuke took up the role following that. Power was basically the Team Dad to the Second Generation.
  • Technical Pacifist: Power! He's the third strongest character (only behind two who existed to killed), but tends to only show off said status when backed into a corner. Additionally, he avoids killing anyone he identifies as "human", while allowing himself to kill anyone he identitfies as a "monster", despite never going through with it. He seems to fight solely to stop those he opposes from harming anyone else. When he believes he knocked Frank out, he declares the fight over, and when Frank proves to still be able to move, defeats him by crippling his legs and one of his arms.
  • That Man Is Dead: It's mentioned several times that Power has foresaken his name and pre-Blog Cast self after creating Regret/Magnesteel.
    • On a lighter note, Zatch Bell Fan has announced changing his internet identity to Zero Brina Fan.
  • Theme Music Power-Up: The final battle with Frank ends this way.
  • Those Two Guys: Frank and Hank start out as this. It Gets Worse.
  • Timey-Wimey Ball
  • True Companions: The Blog Cast, no questions.
  • Two-Part Trilogy: Rewrite is like this. The first two movies retell the Magnesteel stuff, with the Return arc thrown in as a breather arc of sorts. The next three movies retell the F-Kira Arc.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Power, when acting as the narrator, takes alot of artistic liberties.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Frank, during the final battle, becomes so enraged with Power he rips off the poor guy's Automail and beats his face with it.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Frank, to the shock and amazement of anyone who knows the character.
    • Subverted in Rewrite. Unlike the Stagnation Special where we saw Frank saving a bird as a child, in Rewrite, we see a young Frank brutally attacking his younger sister.
  • Villainesses Want Heroes: Lai's crush on Daisuke. She even plans to hypnotize him if he doesn't return her feelings.
    • Aisha obviously has a thing for Shinobu in Rewrite. She even goes so far as to pin her to the ground, force a kiss on her and make Shinobu her right-hand woman after capturing her.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Frank has several during the final battle, including one stating he's the only true human left.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Power once he has Rei make a coat for him.
  • What Do You Mean Its Not Symbolic: Power's choice to leave this world in order to create an era of peace. That is all.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: Brought up during the final battle with Frank.
  • Whip It Good: Lai.
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: WaterBug
    • Recently his name was revealed to be Kenji Mizubagu.
  • Who Needs Their Whole Body?: Power has automail, but still kicks ass.
  • Wild Mass Guessing: In-universe. Power theorized Lemmy was the daughter of Tsuruya and Tsuruya was his future wife, thus making Lemmy his daughter. How it turned out to be right is anyone's guess.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Frank to Lai, once she's captured by the Blog Cast. He planned a similar fate for Balthor, only this time for being "too perfect".
  • Younger Than They Look: By the end of Season 4, Daisuke and Shinobu appear to be 22, but due to being clones, Daisuke is only 9 and Shinobu is only 6.
