Blue Exorcist/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • And the Fandom Rejoiced: When the anime was announced.
  • Arc Fatigue: The Kyoto arc is starting to suffer from this.
  • Awesome Music:
    • The anime's opening "CORE PRIDE [dead link]" by old favorite J-Rock band UVERworld.
    • The second opening, "IN MY WORLD by ROOKiEZ is PUNK'D is just as awesome as the first opening.
    • Not only the openings are awesome, the soundtrack itself deserves a mention, too. See for yourself.
  • Cliché Storm: Be ready for for A LOT of recycled Shonen tropes.
  • Complete Monster: Ernst Frederik Egin
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Amaimon.
  • Ear Worm:
  • Ensemble Darkhorse: Renzou if the merchandise has anything to say about it. This guy is snuck into pictures alongside more central characters of the show when his fellow companions who've arguably been given more focus, Bon and Konekomaru, are nowhere in sight! There's even an official letter set where he appears more often than the main character, for some reason.
    • Fans seem to have taken quite a large interest in Amaimon.
    • Juuzou and Kinzou, Renzou's older brothers, are very popular for being introduced not too long ago and with only moderate, and moderately important, screen time. In general, the Shima brothers seem to be very popular amongst fans.
  • Genius Bonus: Both Anaimon's and Mephisto's names are that of the Prince of Hell. Rin's name also qualifies. Also doubles as Names to Run Away From Really Fast.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: One of the first filler episodes in the anime involves a kraken attacking a coastal town. Guess what the first chapter after the whole Impure King arc involves?
    • It's funny think that Hiroshi Kamiya (Mephisto) spouts any German used in the show when Amaimon's voice actor, Tetsuya Kakihara, was born and raised in Germany and is as fluent in German as he is in Japanese.
  • Launcher of a Thousand Ships: Fans ship Rin with his brother Yukio, with Mephisto and/or Amaimon, Shiemi, Izumo, Suguro/Bon, Shima Renzou, Shima Kinzou, Shima Juuzou (yes, often enough all three Shima brothers and Rin)...
    • Interesting case in that, out of it, the Japanese fandom has invented a rather intense rivalry between Yukio and Shima (for Rin) that is absolutely nonexistent in canon.
  • Memetic Badass: Shiro lives for all of 2 episodes (or one chapter) and is already established as one of the most badass characters in the series. In the manga anyway.
  • Memetic Molester: Mephisto Pheles in many fanworks, due to his 'flamboyance'.
    • Saburouta Toudou. It doesn't help that he has straddled Yukio THREE times and that everything he says to him is a double entendre.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Fujimoto Shiro as he's possessed by Satan, he gets a demonic appearance and starts disintegrating because Satan is too powerful for him. Cue a bleeding, horribly disfigured face. Then he rips his fingers off. The anime toned it down.
      • That depends on your definition of toned down. Sure, we don't actually see the Fingore happening; we just cut to Rin's expression of horror and hear them being torn off. For me, it was much worse.
    • Ghouls. They look like they crawled right out of something like Amnesia, being horrible, stitched-together, bleeding rotting things.
    • Rin as his face is literally punched off by Amaimon. Again, anime toned it down considerably.
    • The IK is a giant FUNGUS. It spreads disease and makes boils on the skin. Ew.
    • To say nothing of resident traitor Saburota Toudou regenerating while being shot by Yukio, always regenerating his mouth first to talk to Yukio about how "nice" it is to be a demon, and that Yukio is already like a demon.
  • Squick: A moth demon laying eggs inside of Shiemi so that Amaimon could command her. And then later we see Yukio pulling larvae out of her neck. Ugh.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Fujimoto's death, moreso in the anime though.
    • When Blacky is in furious denial of Shirou's death and has become a danger, Rin manages to convince him of the truth. Blacky's grief-stricken acceptance of that truth is heartbreaking, to say the least.
  • Too Cool to Live: Fujimoto.
  • Woobie:
    • Rin.
    • Subverted with Ernst. According to him, he lost his face, his daughter, and his freedom all at once. It took YEARS for him to climb all the way back up, and the only thing that gave him the courage to do so was his photo of his grandchildren (whom he'd never met.) However, everything he said that he went through, aside from having his face burnt off, were all Blatant Lies.
