Brightburn is a 2019 supernatural horror film directed by Peter Yarovesky and produced by James Gunn. It is a dark retelling of the Superman mythos.

It's the story of Brandon Beyers, a 12-year-old boy who was found by a farming couple when his ship crashed to Earth. He seems like a nice boy...at first. When he starts to develop superpowers, he turns dark and goes on a murderous crusade to "Take the World".

Tropes used in Brightburn include:
  • Animal Motifs: Brandon has an encyclopedic knowledge of bees in his repitoire.
  • The Bad Guy Wins / Karma Houdini: Brandon gets away with all the shit he pulled in the movie with no remorse for his actions.
  • Beware the Superman: One of the most horrifying examples of this trope.
  • Creepy Child: Brandon after getting his powers.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: The Bryers do everything they can to help Brandon, but their efforts prove to be in vain.
  • Eye Scream: This happens to Erica, the waitress whom Brandon attacks.
  • Hero Antagonist: Brandon's adoptive parents and most of his victims account as this.
  • Mysterious Past: Although Brandon's life prior to the events of the film have yet to be given too much detail, what we can hypothesize (based on the origins of Superman and other similar characters like Hyperion or Ultraman) is that he was sent by his parents from a dying planet to conquer the Earth.
  • The Sociopath: Guess who.
  • Villain Protagonist: Brandon, as is often the case in horror films.
  • The Un-Reveal: Unless a sequel or some form of continuation comes along, Brandon's alien origins will always remain a mystery.
