Why is this a Category Page?

There are no subtropes, so would it not make more sense for this to be a regular trope page?

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

If you look towards the bottom, it's for the auto-indexing of the subpages.

MW does this much better than we can manually and it makes for a smaller database footprint as well.

DocColress (talkcontribs)

I don't get it. What happened to the regular trope page? What was wrong with that?

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

DocColress, why did you revert my edit? The link works better in the way I changed it, and ref tags simply don't work properly on Category pages.

DocColress (talkcontribs)

I didn't really know what would happen if I did that. Sorry. You can revert it back?

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

DocColress, I'm simply trying to take advantage of the auto categorization feature prebuilt into MediaWiki by moving all index pages to Category pages. This is much more efficient than the manual method done by TV Tropes and makes the page load faster since it's not load additional links on the content page since those links have already been automatically loaded by the Category namespace.

This has the benefit of enhancing the tagging feature of the category box in that any new page created with the same category as the base page will be auto added, saving everyone a lot of work instead of having to add it manually.

It also makes it easier to run mass bot jobs to organize index pages in a hierarchical manner via the Category pages.

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

I should point out that there seems to be no reason for Magnificent Bastard to be an Index Page, as its content is very narrowly-defined. Index Pages ought to be for tropes that contain diversity in subject matter (lots of sub-tropes, for instance) that need to be, well, categorized.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

QS, not that I entirely disagree, but this page was made an index page on TVT, and I've been trying to make all of our pages that fall into the sphere of index like "Jerkass" "Door Tropes", or any other page with several related subpages be made into a Category page (our equivalent), which, combined with our category tagging, makes it quite easy sort through our Index Index, decreases database load by preventing redundant information (and decreases time needed for pages to load globally as a result)

Basically, this is being done for technical reasons to optimize things, and while I'm open to arguments why it's a bad idea, I'm not sure I understand your objections at this point.

DocColress (talkcontribs)

I was fine with the trope page as it was, but I can see the reasons for changing it.
