Cities: Skylines

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Cities: Skylines, developed by Colossal Order (the same people behind Cities in Motion) and published by Paradox Interactive, is a modern take on the classic city simulation.

Released on March 10, 2015, it has received overwhelmingly positive reception by players, who cite it as a proper, full-3D successor to SimCity 4, unlike the disappointment that was the 2013 SimCity. While it lacks the difficulty of SC4 and is not graphically impressive by modern standards, it makes up for it with an abundance of other features, like enormous maps, free-form road placement, establishment of separate districts with their own set of ordinances and taxation levels, fully simulated water and sewage systems, and full modding support on Steam.

Has a sequel in Cities: Skylines II. The game can be found on Steam.

Tropes used in Cities: Skylines include:
  • Game Mod: A number exist for the game.
  • Terrain Sculpting: Allows the player to deform and landscape terrain.
  • Video Game Caring Potential: Creating a clean well run city results in this.
  • Video Game Cruelty Potential: The player can deliberately create situations that expose residents to pollution, poor on non existent access to basic services, etc.
    • More than one player has used the sewage and terrain mechanics to geoengineer sewage tsunamis.
  • Video Game Time: Day and night can pass in game.
  • Wide Open Sandbox: Very few restrictions on how the player runs their city.
