Civilization (video game)/Characters

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Debuted in Civilization I

Mohandas Gandhi

Ghandi is the default leader of India in all Civilization games.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Ascended Meme: Built into his AI in the fifth game. He will always try to develop nukes before anyone else, but unless you give him cause, he will almost never use them against you.
  • Cool Old Guy: His default appearance.
  • Nice Guy: By default, his AI is set so he will almost never attack the player first and is quick to establish friendly relations in all games.
  • Nuke'Em: Due to a hilarious bug in the original game, he was very nuke happy. He will always try to build them faster than any other civilization as part of his default AI in the fifth game as a Shout Out to this.
  • Stripperiffic: Rare male example with his avatar in the fifth game.

Abraham Lincoln

Default leader of the United States in the first three Civilization games and the Beyond The Sword expansion to Civ4.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Eagleland: Mostly exhibits the more positive images of this trope in his AI and civic inclinations in most games, though has bonuses for expansionism as well, so he covers both sides of this trope, though the latter is mostly downplayed.
  • Face Palm: One of his default animations in the fourth game.
  • Nice Guy: Inclined towards peace, favors the democratic government options, and is unlikely to declare war in most games without provocation.
  • Nice Hat: Dons a spiffy fur hat pre-Modern Era in Civ III. Oddly, he never wears the stovepipe hat he was known for.
  • Slave Liberation: One of his favored policies in the fourth game is Emancipation.

Ghenghis Khan (Temujin)

The default leader of the Mongolians in Civilization games.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Blood Knight: Has a marked preference for warmongering in all games.
  • Bash Brothers: Stay on his good side in any game where you can declare a military alliance, and he'll be this to you.
  • Gonk: His art in Civ3.
  • Funetik Aksent: Averted. He should speak with an ancient Mongolian accent in the fifth game, but uses Modern Mongolian instead, likely because knowledge of the original is essentially nonexistent in this day and age.

Hammurabi

Leader of the Babylonians/Sumerians in Civilization I and Civ 4's Beyond The Sword expansion.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Badass Bureaucrat: Prefers the Bureaucracy civic in Civ4 and also enjoys warmongering, even having bonuses for the latter as well.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Very responsive to peace making and diplomatic agreements by default.

Alexander the Great

The default Greek leader in every Civlization game.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Blood Knight: When he's not being diplomatic, he tends to show this tendency in every game.
  • Historical Beauty Update: He seems to grow ever more like a Bishonen with each successive game, while still retaining many of his historical characteristics.
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language: In Civlization V, he speaks in Ancient Greek. More specifically, with what's been called the Erasmian accent.

Elizabeth I

Default leader of the English in all Civilization games.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Progressively Prettier: Her art was rather unattractive to decent at best in the earlier games, but noticeably improved in Civ4 and especially Civ5. The SNES art for the original Civilization was a bit of an aversion, looking quite nice compared to the original DOS version.
  • Heroic Albino: If you play as her in Civ3.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Her AI is inclined towards making crafty trade agreements. She's also quite resistant to military alliances and similar deals unless she stand to gain from it or you've managed to keep her incredibly pleased with you.

Napoleon Bonaparte

Default leader of the French in the 1st, 4th, and 5th Civilization games

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Blood Knight: True to history, he's rather fight happy.
  • Cool Horse: Is mounted on one in Civ5 during negotiations.
  • It Will Never Catch On: Napoleon suffers a penalty in Civilization V to culture generation after Steam Power is invented, based on his IRL skepticism of the benefits and usefulness of steam powered locomotion.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Is quite prone to making deceptive bargains and espionage.
  • Perma Stubble: Particularly visible in Civilization IV.

Mao Tse Tung

Default leader of China in the first, second, third, and fourth Civilization games.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Banned in China: Mao is replaced by other leaders in the Chinese region releases of the game because it's seen as offensive for the founder of the country to be possibly overthrown.
  • Bald of Awesome / Bald Of Evil: His default look.
  • Nice Hat: Gets a brown fur hat in the pre-Modern Times Civilization III.
  • Properly Paranoid: While Mao will not often start a fight, he always keeps his espionage attempts up in every game he has the option to do so just in case anyone is trying to plot against him.
  • This Is My Side: Mao's AI is very territorial, reacting harshly to any encroachment on his lands.
  • Stone Wall: Usually has bonuses to defensive structures.

Montezuma

Montezuma is the default leader of the Aztecs in all Civilization games.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Blood Knight: Very, very fight happy.
  • Funetik Aksent: Averted. Speaks in Modern Nahuatl instead of the classical dialect common to his era in Civilization V. Since it's implied at the beginning of the game a player assuming his role is essentially getting a second chance at rebuilding the Aztecs, this may be intentional to show how things changed after the influence of the Spanish.
  • Zerg Rush: Favors this tactic in wars to steam roll over his enemies.
