"In 2166, an immortal tyrant named Vandal Savage conquered the world, and murdered my wife and child. I have assembled an elite team to hunt him throughout time and stop his rise to power. Unfortunately, my plan is opposed by the body I'd sworn my allegiance to: the Time Masters. In the future, my friends may not be heroes. But if we succeed, they will be remembered as legends." |
A 2016 spin-off of Arrow and The Flash, DC's Legends of Tomorrow is another entry in The CW's shared DC universe. Renegade Time Master Rip Hunter travels to 2016 to recruit several allies to help him stop immortal tyrant Vandal Savage. He recruits Sarah Lance (White Canary), Ray Palmer (The Atom), Jefferson Jackson (Half of Firestorm), Martin Stein (the other half of Firestorm), Leonard Snart (Captain Cold), Mick Rory (Heatwave), Carter Hall and Kendra Saunders (Hawkman and Hawkgirl, who have a personal grudge with Savage carried throughout their many reincarnations), all of whom previously debuted on Arrow or The Flash, on the claim that they are great heroes in the future. Shortly into the mission Rip admits they were actually plucked from the timeline because history would not miss them.
- Artifact of Doom: The Spear of Destiny in season 2.
- Clock Roaches: The Reverse-Flash seeks the spear to stop the Black Flash from coming after him because his ancestor died before reproducing.
- Mythology Gag: Nate names the season 2 antagonists "The Legion of Doom" after "an old Hanna-Barbera cartoon". Other cast members are resistant to the name, but eventually warm up to it.
- Scattered Across Time and Space: Season 2 opens with the cast having been stranded in various time periods ranging from the Cretaceous onward due to use of the emergency Time Scatter functionality.
- Story-Breaker Team-Up: Reverse-Flash is much more powerful than the other members of the Legion. The plot is well aware of that and forces Superman Stays Out of Gotham by having him regularly run off to be "elsewhere" as he's unable to stay in one time period long to avoid the Black Flash finding him.
- Timey-Wimey Ball: Time travel rules are very inconsistent in the first season. The second does noticeably better.
- Token Evil Teammate: Snart and Rory. Their knowledge of criminal operations proves valuable for many of the team's missions.
- Villain Episode: Season 2's The Legion of Doom features the Legion
- Villain Team-Up: The Legion of Doom in Season 2.
