Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • 0% Approval Rating: For a time, Phil had claimed to be "the most prolific YouTuber on the platform" due to his massive number of videos uploaded, and that he will leave a "legacy" behind if he leaves the internet, citing the number of years he's been there for. Contrary to what Phil believes, however, he and his content are almost universally despised by the mass populace, and the only memories people will have of Phil when he finally leaves the internet are unanimously negative. Yet somehow, Phil still refuses to see this.
  • Accentuate the Negative: His "7 Years of Slander" video ended up being this. After his tweets mocking ProJared caught a lot of attention, Phil made this video to clear his name and refute the most common accusations thrown at him over the years. Without even realising it, he only ended up drawing more attention to the bad things he's done, and gave people less reason to stick around as most of the people who followed him after the aforementioned tweets ended up unsubscribing and unfollowing almost immediately afterwards.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Is Darksydephil genuinely bad at playing video games, or is he simply pretending to be bad because it gets him more attention and views? Many people who have seen his videos refuse to believe his stupidity is genuine, claiming that if Phil really had that little common sense, he'd be incapable of living on his own.
  • Bile Fascination: A lot of people watch his videos solely to see if he really is as bad as he's said to be.
  • Broken Base: Phil's frequent moments of idiocy tend to fall into this; with some overlap, you will have one group of people who will find Phil's incompetence with playing games to be outright hilarious, even if it's not what Phil himself intended. On the other hand though, you have people find Phil's incompetence to be so frustrating, so tedious, and so unbearable that the novelty wears off very quickly.
    • His old passion project with his former friends, Project 7; either that was a narmtastic mini series that at least had some good editing and hammy acting, or it was a sloppily made series that was acted and written badly.
  • Comically Missing the Point: One can see traces of AVGN mannerisms in Phil's commentary sometimes, like the copious amount of swearing and use of phrases like "What the fuck were they thinking?!", but he seemed to understand very little about why the character was so popular.
  • Creator's Pet: Fans started accusing him of this trope with his treatment of the Souls/Bloodborne franchise at the beginning of 2017, which he often spent a lot of time on these games during 2017 and 2018. Street Fighter definitely seems to be this to him as well, mainly because of his history with Street Fighter tournaments.
  • Critical Research Failure: During the credits of BioShock Infinite, Phil went on a massive tirade against Troy Baker (voice of Booker DeWitt), for wearing a scarf whilst in the recording studio, seemingly oblivious to the fact that voice actors often wear scarves indoors as a means to keep their vocal chords warm.
    • Phil claimed at the end of his Resident Evil 3 playthrough that Shinji Mikami have no involvement in directing the game, hence why the game felt so different to him compared to to the first two games, and that Nemesis wasn't supposed to be the third installment, rather Code: Veronica was to be the actual third entry. What he doesn't realise is that Capcom had pushed for Nemesis to be the third entry in the series for the sake of design consistency with the other PlayStation 1 titles, but also that Mikami didn't direct Resident Evil 2 either, all of which Phil could easily learn with a quick Wikipedia search.
    • Phil went on a tirade about Bluetooth technology during his livestream of Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped (via the N.Sane Trilogy), and how it was interfering with his ability its play the game, while bringing up his TV remote and wireless mouse causing interference, thus input delay on his controller. However, Phil clearly doesn't understand wireless tech since a TV remote and wireless mouse don't even use Bluetooth connectivity; the former uses Infrared, the latter uses Radio Frequency, usually via a USB receiver.
    • In July 2021, a viewer baited him into doing 25 quick pushups in exchange for $200. Phil goes on the defensive when said viewer asks him to do them again on camera, believing that Phil faked it. Phil claims that this type of deal doesn't work this way, except it does; if you're to do something, you'd best be prepared to show proof that you did it before you get paid. This could just be Phil's sense of entitlement talking, since he acts like he is owed that $200.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Phil's humor, on occasion. Even got him banned from Blip.tv during his It Got Worse times in 2011.
    • Phil's often contrarian opinions on certain games like Metal Gear Solid or Sonic Adventure is already enough to anger a few fans of those games; said fans often seethe with fury when he starts telling them they're wrong for liking those games, or saying the fans are something along the lines of nostalgia-blind.
  • Dude, Not Funny: Much of Phil's humour can qualify depending on your tastes. However, it is mostly agreed that his "Space Nazi/Necromorph Jews" skit was nothing short of tasteless, to the point where blip.tv staff caught wind of it and permabanned him from the site.
    • Same thing when he makes jokes about recently deceased celebrities, like a tasteless joke he made about Stan Lee dying in a mosh pit only days after the Spider-Man creator had passed away.
  • Funny Moments: Any time Phil fails in a video game due to an actual glitch is often quite funny to some, as are some of his other misfortunes.
    • There is also that part in Far Cry 4 where he pissed off a rhinoceros so much (by shooting it a couple of times, and a setting it on fire) that it mauled him to death!
    • In the same playthrough, an eagle swooped down and carried off a wild boar he was tried to hunt, which is as funny as it sounds (Phil: "Fucking Eagle!!)
    • His laughter when he was sent flying in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5. Made even funnier by the fact that he simply ollied from a flat surface.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Phil made his "Debunking 7 Years of Slander" video after he got some "positive" attention from some tweets he made mocking ProJared when he was dealing with some serious allegations. In hindsight however, the video only makes Phil look like an even bigger clout-chasing attention hog after Jared came out and addressed the allegations three months later. Also demonstrates that Phil's intentions with this video were more spiteful in retrospect.
    • He seemed to harbour a genuine dislike towards the hip-hop duo Kris Kross when he played Make My Video (for Sega CD) in the early 2010s, stating that he did not understand how they got popular, and questioning if they amounted to anything later on. In May 2013, Chris "Mac Daddy" Kelly died from a drug overdose.
  • He Panned It, Now He Sucks: Often gets this reaction when he bashes popular games like Metal Gear Solid, Gears of War, Sonic Adventure, Crash Bandicoot, and Rise of the Tomb Raider. Usually a justified reaction on their part due to Phil's general ineptitude when playing these games.
    • The opposite reaction of He Praised It, Now He Sucks is often invoked when he praises games that are universally panned like Sonic '06, Ride to Hell: Retribution, Murdered: Soul Suspect, and Duke Nukem Forever. This has led a lot of people to accuse him of being a contrarian, and only giving controversial opinions for easy views.
  • It's Hard, So It Sucks: Often the source of Phil's vitriolic commentary, as he will not only slam a game for supposedly being "too hard", but the also the developers and publishers as well. Most of the time, this is due to Phil not bothering to take any time to learn how the game in question is meant to be played. 9 times out of 10, he will find any excuse he can think of, or blame the first thing that comes to mind pertaining to why he can't pass a certain section of a game, instead of evaluating what he did wrong and correcting his mistakes. It is one of the main reasons why his content has taken a further nosedive in quality over the years.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks: Phil has been a content creator since 2008, and his content has not changed since then; the only thing that has changed is the switch to direct capture, and the format is slightly different. Other than that, everything else from his skill, commentary, and inability to improve remains the same, and Phil's viewership has suffered tremendously as a result. Also not helped by the fact that Phil will either shoot down any and all suggestions with a rocket launcher, or the ones he does take up don't get implemented until years later.
  • Karma Houdini: Phil uses his pre-streams as an avenue to beg his viewers to give him money to either pay his bills or his taxes. It's worth noting that asking for donations for personal financial support violates Twitch's terms of service, and yet Phil has never received proper punishment for it in spite of the insurmountable evidence of him doing so. Granted, he was eventually departnered in 2021, but the egregious begging wasn't the reason.
  • Memetic Loser: Phil is one of the biggest punching bags in the Let's Play community, thanks to his complete ineptitude at playing video games, his inability to tolerate criticism, and his smug behavior towards others.
  • Moral Dissonance: Phil is always complaining about how TIHYDP videos ruin his livelihood, even claiming they almost got him killed...somehow. Yet, he doesn't see anything wrong with being rude and sometimes borderline abusive to his viewers, frequently breaking platform rules, refusing to get a more sustainable job, using his friends and loved ones for personal gain, and scapegoating one individual for a string of failures from November 2018 onward.
  • Most Annoying Sound: To many, its Phil's stilted laughter. To Phil himself, obnoxious speed metal is the devil to him.
  • Never Live It Down: No one will ever let him forget that one time he was caught cranking it on stream on 1st May 2016, no matter how much he tries to laugh it off nowadays.
  • Nightmare Fuel: One of the more prominent TIHYDP makers, The 0utsyder, incorporates a really horrifying looking JPEG of Phil's face (which is drained of colour, complete with an uncanny wide-eyed grin) into the thumbnails of a lot of his DSP related videos; have fun trying to sleep after seeing that horrific abomination for more than five seconds!
  • Seasonal Rot: While DSP's content can never be considered high art, there is a lot of debate over when it really started to deteriorate. Some claim it started when he really started to make a substantial income, others will say it was when he began involving his girlfriend in his videos. Nobody truly knows when Phil's brand of Seasonal Rot truly began.
  • That Came Out Wrong: In one of the few instances of being unjustly banned from Twitch, Phil stuttered trying to say the word "negative" during a livestream of Returnal in May 2021, though it sounded like he dropped a racial slur on stream because of what he tried to say. In context though, it was clearly an accidental slip of the tongue, although some people still believe otherwise, hence why it is here as YMMV.
  • What an Idiot!: Sometimes, good ol' DSP will shout about how the game's he's playing never explained what he's supposed to be doing... and a prompt that told him what to do was onscreen seconds before. Now has its own page.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Downplayed; obviously hasn't actually committed such an act (and there's no reason to suggest he would, either), but he did threaten to hit an 11 year old girl on stream once when he was playing in a VR chat session. He also made sure to make said threat when the girl in question was out of earshot.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: For some backwards reason, Phil seems to think that it is the job of his viewers to keep him entertained during a live stream. In reality, it is the other around; he should be trying to entertain his viewers to give them a reason to stick around (after all, he is the one providing the content, and the entertainment that is supposed to come with it). You'd think Phil would know this by now considering he has been a content creator since 2008!
  • You Keep Using That Word: Phil is always going on and on preaching about "positivity", but comes off as rather disingenuous considering his poor attitude and venomous personality. Seems to be a common tic amongst content creators of his ilk.
  • You Keep Telling Yourself That: Often invoked when his more prominent critics respond to his content. Usually, they say something to this effect whenever Phil feels the need to remind everyone that he does Let's Playing/Live streaming for fun and not for money.
