Disabled Character, Disabled Actor: Geri Jewell, who played Jewel, actually has cerebral palsy.
Fake American: Northern Irish Paula Malcolmson as Trixie.
- An odd case with British Ian McShane as Al Swearengen. The person he is based on was American, but the production crew feared that McShane could slip into his native accent so they threw in some lines where other characters comment on some rumor that he was British born.
Fake Russian: Averted for Blazanov. The actor Pavel Lychnikoff was born and raised in Russia.
Name's the Same: Samuel's family name is Fields, the same as Steve the Drunk's.
Playing Against Type: Brad Douriff, best known for a long list of villain roles, plays a good and mostly noble character Doc Cochran.
Throw It In: Jim Beaver chose Ellsworth's first name, Whitney.
- The conclusion of the fight with Captain Turner (where Dan plugs out one of Turner's eyes) was based on a real fight involving W. Earl Brown's grandfather.
What Could Have Been: Two feature-length finales were planned, but aren't going to happen.
- Harry Manning was a real person that surprisingly defeated Bullock at the elections to become sheriff of the county. This is foreshadowed in the last episode of the third season when Hearst mobilizes his men to vote against Bullock to spite him, but naturally there wasn't a fourth season to explore Bullock's reaction to losing the election nor Manning - who within the show didn't want to be sheriff - presumably experimenting The Chains of Commanding.
