Doctor Who/Recap/S32/E08 Let's Kill Hitler/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Crazy Awesome:
    • The Doctor's sonic cane. He should use it more often.
    • Mels and River Song. River, in the immediate aftermath of an apparent assassination attempt on Hitler, hops out of his office window and, confronted by armed and angry Nazi soldiers, says this to them.

River: Hello boys.
Nazi: What are you doing here?
River: Well, I was on my way to this gay gypsy Bar Mitzvah for the disabled when I suddenly thought, "Gosh, the Third Reich's a bit rubbish; I think I'll kill the Führer." Who's with me?

Hitler: Thank you, whoever you are. I think you have just saved my life.
The Doctor: Believe me... It was an accident...

    • Rory punches out Hitler.
    • River Song holds everyone hostage in ballroom and forces them to strip their clothes. After Amy and Rory catch up, they see a crowd of people running in their underwear. Cut to River trying out a few clothes.

River/Melody: Ladies and Gentlemen. I don't have a thing to wear. Take off your clothes.

    • After the realisation that their best friend from their childhood was actually their daughter, who's actually River, and that she's just regenerated and flirted with the Doctor Rory and Amy's expressions are priceless. Taking in the fact they're in Nazi Germany, Rory says he's getting a banging sound in his head. The response?

"That's Hitler banging on the closet."

      • A blink and you miss it part of that sequence, when River/Melody props her leg up on the chair, the Doctor immediately puts his hand over his eyes.
    • River trolling the Nazis by saying she was going to a gay gypsy bar mitzvah for the disabled before deciding that the Third Reich was rubbish so she should go kill Hitler.
  • Crowning Moment of Heartwarming: When the Interface uses Rose's image. You can tell by the Doctor's face that he remembers how much he loved her, before his expression changes when he remembers his guilt. Could double as Tear Jerker.
    • When River/Melody is about to be shot by the Nazis, Rory's "no" borders on Tear Jerker.
    • Also when Rory and Amy are about to be exradicated by the Antibodies and they say goodbye to each other.
  • Genius Bonus: The first Nazi we meet is called "Zimmerman" which is a bit of a headscratcher since that's typically a Jewish name and that would be a rather big problem because...well. But in fact the name Zimmermann is a common variant that does not have that ethnic connotation.
  • High Octane Nightmare Fuel: Time-travelling self-appointed "punishers of crimes against humanity" Knight Templar. Oh boy...
  • Freud Was Right: Rory lampshades this upon realizing he's trapped in a giant robot version of Amy.
  • Tear Jerker: The prequel mini-episode. Amy's calling on the Doctor's answering machine, asking for the Doctor to tell her what he's learned about her daughter, how he's going to save her, as the camera pans over a seemingly empty TARDIS... until, at last, we see the Doctor's sitting there quietly, listening to Amy's live call, not picking up because he has no answer for her.
    • The whole TARDIS interface scene. The Doctor doesn't want to use Rose, Martha, or Donna as the holographic interface due to the extreme guilt he feels about the effect he's had on them, and his dialogue with the Amelia-hologram.
    • When River/Melody is going to shot by Nazis. Rory "no" brings tears.
    • Also when Rory and Amy are about to be eradicated by the Antibodies and they say goodbye to eachother.

Amy: I love you.
Rory: I love you too.

    • The Doctor begging River to save him.
  • Unfortunate Implications: The Doctor says that the kiss/kill thing is because she's a woman. Er.
