Waitress: You can't have egg, bacon, spam and sausage without the spam.
Wife: Why not!?
Waitress: Bleagh, it wouldn't be egg, bacon, spam and sausage, would it?
Wife: I DON'T LIKE SPAM!
Husband: Don't cause a fuss, dear; I'll have your spam, I love it! I'm having spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, baked beans, spam, spam, and spam!

When a food is said to be loathed by someone, sometimes to the point of characterization. Basically, the exact opposite of the Trademark Favorite Food.

Not to be confused with I Do Not Like Green Eggs and Ham, or Does Not Like Men, for that matter. (Unless you eat human women instead... Get your mind out of the gutter!) Also has nothing to do with junk e-mail (which many of us quite justifiably despise).[1]

Sometimes these will fall under Stock Yuck, turned Up to Eleven for one person. Otherwise, expect something either so universally loved that no-one understands their problem, or so rarely encountered that you wonder how they manage to build up such a hatred of it.

Sometimes, an Extreme Omnivore will have just that one item they don't like, and this trope will be played for laughs. In this case, it's usually something very mundane, so that while a character might be willing to eat disgusting and probably poisonous mixtures, they absolutely refuse to eat something everyone else enjoys.

(Ironically, although SPAM is an acquired taste for most people, it's not actually that horrible, and it's very popular in much of the Pacific, particularly Hawaii and South Korea.)

See also Picky Eater.

Examples of Does Not Like Spam include:

Anime and Manga

  • Edward from Fullmetal Alchemist really, really hates milk.
  • Kyo from Fruits Basket hates leeks, onions and miso.
  • Tenchi Muyo!: Tenchi apparently hates miso soup. At least in the third movie.
  • Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory: Kou Uraki and carrots. And it gets dialled Up to Eleven in Super Robot Wars.
  • BT from .hack//Sign named her character based on the removal of this from her favorite food. I'll give you a hint. It's not Bacon and it's not Tomatoes.
    • Mimiru points out it has no taste upon being informed of this which leaves her bewildered as to why BT dislikes it.
  • Sailor Moon: Each of the Sailor Senshi have a least favorite food listed in their profile. Usagi's is, ironically, carrots.
  • Crayon Shin-chan: Shin-chan hates green peppers. Possibly the reason why he always asks older girls if they like them is to allow him to keep hitting on them.
  • Similar to Sailor Moon, most of the cast of Naruto has a food they dislike, with the exception of Lee, who cannot dislike any kind of food. Naruto in particular hates vegetables, and a brief flashback shows Kakashi appearing in his window to offer him some vegetables with his ramen.
  • The captains and lieutenants of Bleach have their favorite foods listed in their profiles, along with foods they dislike. Gin likes persimmons and dislikes dried potatoes (because he bit into one thinking it was a persimmon), while interestingly enough, his lieutenant Izuru dislikes persimmons. Komamura, an anthropomorphic wolf, has hated carrots ever since his father told him that they don't eat them.
  • Vivio initially dislikes green peppers in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS. According to Sound Stage M3, though, she got over it by the end of it.
  • Kanako Urashima in Love Hina doesn't like sweets at all. Naturally, she was adopted into a family of confectioners, and she crushes on her adopted brother, who is an expert even amongst the family at them.
  • Akisame Koetsuji of Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple loathes bell peppers to the point that they're occasionally used as a threat for dinner if he doesn't do something or other. He always complies.
  • Pokémon: Misty loathes carrots and peppers.
  • in One Piece, the Trademark Favorite Food of each Straw Hat crew member is established, and in an SBS question, a fan asked Oda what each crew member's least favorite food was:
    • Monkey D. Luffy: Cherry pie, or at least a certain shop's brand of it.
      • He also doesn't like mochi, something that becomes a problem when he fights Katakuri, who has a Devil Fruit power that creates and manipulates mochi. He clearly can't win such a fight the same way he dealt with Cracker's army of biscuit monsters.[2]
    • Roronoa Zoro: Chocolate (Too sweet!)
    • Nami: Orangette (likes actual oranges better)
    • Usopp: Mushrooms (They make him sick)
    • Sanji: Konjac (Unhealthy)
    • Tony Tony Chopper: Spicy food
    • Nico Robin: Chewing gum (Can't swallow it)
    • Franky: Marshmallows (Prefers hard candy)
    • Brook: Lemons (No point in eating something sour if they don't change your expression)
      • Non Straw Hat examples include Buggy not likeing tomatoes, Trafalgar Law not likeing bread, and Blackbeard not liking well-done meat, something that, along with Luffy's dislike for cherry pie (Blackbeard's favorite) is the reason they disliked each other at first sight.
      • A purely fantasy example, Devil Fruit is a universal Stock "Yuck!" in the series; while nobody ever eats more than one in their lives (well, no one has and lived) they are known to taste absolutely horrible. Those who eat them feel as thought they've been poisoned, which they have, seeing as the powers they bestow are technically curses.

Comic Books

  • In Spider-Man comics, Peter may love his aunt's wheatcakes, but according to Uncle Ben, he doesn't like her meatloaf. He also claims in one story he "can't stand" corn fritters.

Film

  • Bad guy Professor Hathaway in Real Genius doesn't like popcorn. Guess what they use to destroy his house.
  • A Christmas Story: "Meat loaf, meat loaf, double beat loaf. I hate meat loaf."
  • Spock does not like Italian Food, according to Star Trek IV the Voyage Home, but gets convinced by Kirk pretty quickly.
  • Tallahassee, from Zombieland, can't stand coconut. It's not the taste, you understand... it's the texture.
  • In How to Train Your Dragon, dragons hate eel. To the point where Hiccup intimidates dragons by having an eel under his shirt.
  • The goblins in Troll 2 are so repulsed by bologna that the kid-hero is able to protect himself from them by eating it. Supposedly, it's the cholesterol that repels them, but that's hardly the most ridiculous part of the plot.
  • Leprechaun; in an early scene, the hungry title character raids a cabinet and finds a box of cereal called Lucky Clovers; he clearly doesn't like them at all. This was, by the way, a Take That aimed at General Mills, who market the Lucky Charms cereal; the studio had wanted GM to partner with them in a mutually beneficial Product Placement deal, but they turned it down.
  • From The Super Mario Bros Movie, Mario ironically does not like mushrooms. When he first finds out about the Super Shrooms (as in, the Power-Ups in the video games he has used since the start of his career), Peach has to force-feed him the first one to convince him to use them.
  • Iago from Aladdin hates crackers, despite being a parrot. Likely because Jafar is an abusive master who often force-feeds them to him.

Literature

  • In Mark Twain's short story The Stolen White Elephant, the titular pachyderm eats anything except European butter, and drinks anything except European coffee.
  • Susan in Discworld: nougat.
    • King Verence detests custard, after having it dumped on him many a time during his youth in the Jesters' Guild.
      • He detests it so much that there's a national ban on custard in Lancre.
    • Makepeace Thomas Bounder, "The Poet of the Cabbages" in The Discworld Almanack, wrote a treatise on "The Hellish Root," aka the potato, believing its popularity to be directly responsible for people being uninterested in cabbages.
  • Rhiow in Diane Duane's Feline Wizards series: tuna.
  • Tita in Like Water for Chocolate can eat just about anything except soft-boiled eggs.
  • In one of the short stories in Marcovaldo by Italo Calvino, Marcovaldo develops an absolute loathing for sausage after eating it every day for weeks.
  • Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham: The protagonist spends most of the book declaring how much he dislikes it, though by the end he is persuaded to try it and discovers that it's actually quite good.
  • Pumuckl, the kobold protagonist of a German children's series hates cheese (which he calls "foul milk").
  • Harry Potter: Dumbledore, despite his general fondness for sweets, avoids Berty Bott's Every-Flavor-Beans after coming across a vomit-flavored one in his youth. He tries them again at the end of the first book, and...

"But I think I'll be safe with a nice toffee, don't you?" (eats bean) "Alas. Earwax."

  • In The Lord of the Rings, Sauron's evil creations, such as the orcs, are repulsed by anything of elven origin, so lembas bread tasted like dust to them. Gollum shared this revulsion to it, having been so badly corrupted by the One Ring.

Live-Action TV

  • The famous Monty Python's Flying Circus "spam" sketch: "I Don't! Like! Spam!". The Trope Namer.
  • Newman on Seinfeld hates broccoli, calling it a "vile weed." Of course, it seems he probably hates all vegetables.
  • In the American version of Big Brother, seasons 7 and beyond introduced the diet called Slop. The food is a mushy food that contains a lot of vitamins and proteins, and the contestants regularly express their dislike for being "Stuck on slop" and compete as hard as they can to not be the side that is forced to eat nothing but slop for a week. It is actually designed that way on purpose...as the Peanut Butter and Jelly diet would make people sleep all the time...the Slop would have people awake for more drama and encourage people to play harder during the food competitions.
  • Red Dwarf: Dave: Lister hates Pot Noodles to the point of eating dog food instead when they're his only options. When stuck on a version of the ship that's supposedly the "higher" version, he orders a Pot Noodle to see if it can make them any good. It does, and he's amazed.
  • Sarah Jane Smith of Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures hates ginger pop. It's how the Doctor recognizes her ginger pop-drinking android impostor in "The Android Invasion.
    • The Seventh Doctor loathed pears. The Eleventh turns out, after much experimentation, to hate apples, yogurt, baked beans, bacon, and bread and butter. To be fair, he had just regenerated.
      • There's a clip that was was cut out of "Human Nature" that says that the Tenth also disliked pears.
  • Bizarre Foods With Andrew Zimmern: Andrew will cheerfully eat almost anything: bloody entrails, duck eggs with a fetus inside, pig brains preserved in aspic, etc. But in an episode about Hawaii, he was presented with a dish made of spam and could barely force himself to taste it. He even went on for about five minutes about how much he hates spam. He also has a strong aversion to durian.
    • He also does not like walnuts.
    • When Zimmern guest starred on the Minneapolis episode of Man vs. Food, he had host Adam Richman (who makes his living eating enormous amounts of fatty, sugary, and/or unearthily spicy foods) try some lutefisk. He couldn't stomach more than one bite.

Andrew Zimmern: Mmmm. That's some good lutefisk
Adam Richman: (face contorted in disgust) How can you tell?

  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer
    • Anya explaining alternative universes, bearing in mind that her example is bound to be self-centered: "Suppose you don't like shrimp. Well, blahh, you say, I wish there was a world without shrimp." This is in addition to bunnies of course.
    • Amy spends five years as a rat, having turned herself into one to escape a lynch mob and being unable to change back. After finally becoming human again, the last thing she wants to eat is cheese.
  • Yuto from Kamen Rider Den-O hates shiitake mushrooms.
  • Iron Chef play-by-play announcer Kenji Fukui hates bell peppers.
    • And Chairman Kaga hates udon noodles. Which was teased about in one udon battle.
  • Rodney McKay of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis with citrus fruits. Admittedly, it's because he claims to be allergic to them.
  • The Cookie Monster on Sesame Street may love cookies, but his little cousin doesn't like them at all; in one skit, he tells her to bring him something that starts with the letter "C", hoping to teach her about cookies, only for her to bring him all sorts of other C-objects, eventually thinking he wants a hug from her, his cousin.
  • In one episode of ALF the title character orders a pizza with everything except beets. He emphasizes that he does not want beets.
  • In Too Close for Comfort, Ted has three, salmon cakes, brussel sprouts, and rhubarb pie. In an episode where Muriel is angry at him, she makes all three for dinner, with red wine no less![3]
  • On The Daily Show, Jon Stewart rants about how much he hates Chicago-style deep dish pizza. Naturally, folks in Chicago didn't take it well...

Music

  • "Weird Al" Yankovic's Albuquerque: "I! HATE! SAUERKRAUT!"
    • If you were force fed nothing but sauerkraut until you were twenty-six-and-a-half you'd understandably hate the stuff too.

Newspaper Comics

  • And of course, there is Mafalda and her legendary hatred of soup.
  • Charlie Brown of Peanuts hates coconut - chocolates with coconut centers, in particular. So does Snoopy. And Linus. At a guess, I'd say Charles Schulz didn't like coconut.
  • Garfield, mostly due to bad cooking, holds a special disgust for snails, fruitcake, and raisins.[4]
    • Except, of course to mess with Jon's mind ("A Vacation From His Senses"). The fact that it worked says something.
    • And shredded coconut - he says it resembles "tiny albino spiders."
    • As well as Spinach. "It looks bad, it tastes bad, it smells bad". (turns bowl over, spinach splats on table) "It even SOUNDS bad."
  • Dennis the Menace hates vegetables and milk - But not things made from milk, like ice cream or chocolate.

Video Games

  • Noodles in the second Parappa the Rapper game.
    • Justified in that they're TAKING OVER THE WORLD! (in a way)
  • Professor Carter in Harvest Moon DS (Cute) loathes curry. He hates it even more because it's all his One-Note Cook of an assistant, Flora, knows how to cook. The ironic thing? It's the Trademark Favorite Food of several other characters.
    • Throughout the series, there are food items that are absolutely loathed by certain characters. Ex. Natalie from Island Of Happiness is Squicked by mushrooms and Julia (same game) feels the same about fish.
  • In Tales of Symphonia, every character has a least favorite food as a game mechanic. The most notably overblown in fandom terms is Kratos's (not that one) hatred of tomatoes, possibly because it's amusing for such a stoic badass to have that kind of a weakness. Notably there is one who shares his dislike his son.
    • It's easy to note that Colette does NOT like Green Peppers. When she starts eating them, it's a hint that something is very wrong.
    • In fact, every player character from the Tales (series) has a least favorite food; some games even have a mechanical display of this (such as said food having less of an effect, or even the opposite effect, on said character).
    • Genis Sage doesn't care much for Gels (the healing items of the game), if you don't give him any for so long, he gets the title "I hate gels!" and a skit.
  • Wart in Super Mario Bros. 2 hates vegetables enough to make them his Weaksauce Weakness.
  • Grunt from Mass Effect 2 is almost the ultimate example of an Extreme Omnivore - the smell of burning plague victims makes him hungry. However, he hates ramen (it looks like worms, apparently).
  • Klonoa, despite resembling a rabbit (among several other things), is known to hate carrots.
  • Saber from Fate/stay night is well known for her large and nondiscriminatory appetite. However, she does not like octopus. At all. Not so much for the taste as the appearance; upon finding out that a food she did enjoy (takoyaki) was stuffed with fried octopus, she expressed horror that she'd been eating "demonic fish of the underworld". This is revealed elsewhere to be due to her confrontations with the Fourth War's Caster in Fate/Zero, who literally did try to kill her with summoned demonic fish of the underworld; the entire experience left her with a dislike for tentacled, squishy things.
  • BlazBlue: "There are two things in this world that I just can not stand! Lies and evil and lies and...BELL PEPPERS!"
  • Your character in Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles starts out with at least two foods they don't like. These don't restore a lot of their health, though if you feed them those foods often enough they'll start to like them.
  • Tina from Borderlands 2 really, really hates raisins. In one quest she gives you during the Torgue DLC, she orders you to destroy every single vending machine in Pandora because one of them gave her an oatmeal raisin cookie instead of chocolate chip.
  • Dragon Age II: Fenris apparently hates fish, according to one of his comments when entering a warehouse for a quest.
    • Then again, this might be because of the smell.
  • In Sonic Unleashed, Sonic gains EXP from foods he eats, with the amount of EXP he gets based on how much he likes the food. He generally doesn't seem generally fond towards basic sweets and drinks, and seems to have a strong distaste for seafood.
  • World of Warcraft,
    • The Horde quest "No More Mushrooms!" is given to you by a Horde soldier in Zangarmarsh who is sick of mushrooms and pleads with you to go hunt for eel meat. Of course, given all the Fungus Humongous in Zangarmarsh, it's not surprising that mushrooms are so commonly used as food.
    • The Alliance outpost on Azuremist Island has a similar problem; Admiral Odyseus is really sick of chicken because their limited supplies mean its the only edible game around.
  • In Don't Starve, one advantage WX-78 has over other characters is that it can eat any sort of food, including food that is spoiled or stale, with no drawbacks, and is immune to poison. However, it does not like sweet potatoes for some reason.

Web Comics

  • In The Inexplicable Adventures of Bob, Molly the Peanut Butter Monster has expressed discomfort with eating peanut butter, saying it makes her feel vaguely cannibalistic.
  • Sonichu hates pickles because they remind him of a certain body part.
  • Homestuck starts on John Egbert's birthday. As a result of all the cake he has been eating for the occasion, he is sick to death of baked goods—especially those by Betty Crocker. This nearly causes a Heroic BSOD when he realizes that his beloved Fruit Gushers are made by the "Heinous Batterwitch," but he decides that angsting over it is stupid.
    • It's implied that his hatred of Betty Crocker products goes back much farther than that, since his adoptive great-grandmother was Betty Crocker herself and baking seems to be something his father does constantly regardless of the occasion, or lack thereof.
    • In the Alpha Session, John's counterpart, Jane Crocker, dislikes Fruit Gushers, ironically enough.
  • Haley in The Order of the Stick doesn't like pickles, leading her none-too-bright rival Crystal to think she can kill Haley by pelting her with pickles.
    • The Monster in the Darkness won't eat the babies that Xykon and Redcloak feed him, and usually just throws them out.
      • That's hardly part of this trope, as not liking babies is quite common. Remember that MitD never said to like human flesh, it's just that Xykon assumed that a monster should eat babies.
  • Played for Drama with Kokkan in "A Broken Winter". After a year as a child spent around freshly slaughtered animals and dead bodies in Irihi slaughterhouse, he refuses to eat meat of any sort. It's also one of the signs of his ongoing battle with PTSD.

Web Original

  • The King of Town in Homestar Runner, while usually fond of anything he could conceivably fit down his throat, hates peas.
    • It is a fan in-joke that if he was served buttered peas, he'd eat the butter off the peas. Somehow.
    • Tiny Samurai (in the Teen Girl Squad series) is the mortal nemesis of corn and corn-based products. No, it doesn't make much more sense in context.

Tiny Samurai: Corn (chips) is no place for a mighty warrior!

  • The KoT also passed up an opportunity to eat egg salad, instead just eating all of the mayonnaise off it. However, this was in Strong Bad's "memory", and probably didn't happen.

Western Animation

  • Doug hated liver and onions.
  • Tohru's dislike for fish is a constant thorn in his side in Jackie Chan Adventures. This may have had to do with a Running Gag where he was often defeated by fish used as an impromptu weapon before his Heel Face Turn, though he is shown to actually dislike it as food as well.
  • Angelica of Rugrats loves all cookies except coconut ones.
  • Perhaps not quite a dislike, but Darkwing Duck can't stomach spicy foods.
  • Murderface on Metalocalypse refuses to eat anything shaped remotely like a penis.
  • Ren and Stimpy: Jerry The Bellybutton Elf hates LINTLOAF?!
  • According to one episode of Tiny Toon Adventures, all kids and broccoli (used to figure out robot duplicates had replaced nearly the entire cast).
  • Kuzco makes several comments throughout The Emperor's New School that he hates cauliflower (he hates all veggies, but this one in particular).
  • Justice League; despite being a gorilla, Grodd claims he hates bananas.
  • Codename: Kids Next Door:
    • In the pilot episode (the first "Operation: C.A.K.E.D.") the Delightful Children invite Laura Limpin, a.k.a. The Big Badolescent to their party as a bodyguard to keep the heroes at bay. Unfortunately, this turns out bad for the villains when Laura actually tries the cake and finds out it has coconut in it, which she hates.
    • Mr. Wink and Mr. Fibb clearly do not like onions on pizza.
    • The whole team is revolted by tapioca pudding, and after unintentionally getting a tanker full of it, they're at a loss on how to get rid of the stuff. To their surprise - and delight - it's what the villains of the episode are after.
    • Father hates broccoli. In fact, he claims that everyone hates it, and that the reason adults make kids eat it is so that they won't have to. The stuff is downright poison to KND Operatives (with the exception of Numbuh Two). Numbuh 362 eats her way through a wall of broccoli to confront him, and while she manages to triumph and save the day, it sends her into a two-week coma afterwards.
      • Same deal with asparagus. Everyone except the Toilenator hates it, Mr. Boss going so far to admit they only make kids eat it so they don't have to.
      • Spinach too. The Vespinaccians and their king try to persuade people to eat it, but only so they don't have to.
    • While he's okay with most junk food, given his age, Numbuh Four doesn't like chocolate all-too much.
    • Numbuh Five's rival Heinrich von Marzipan loves cheeseburgers... But not if they have pickles.
    • Black licorice is so despised by candy pirates that there's a curse associated with it, although Numbuh Five says she "kind of" likes it.
    • Numbuh Two is a Big Eater who will eat almost anything (including broccoli and spinach) but draws the line at rhubarb pie.
    • While ice cream is the Trademark Favorite Food of nearly every character on the show, sorbet definitely is not. In "Operation: C.A.K.E.D.-F.I.V.E", Father's Evil Plan involves constructing an ice-cream cake the size of the Death Star; when he has the captured Numbah 86 and Numbuh 18th Century thrown in the detention block, they quickly find that eating their way out is impossible, because he was savvy enough to build that part of the complex out of sorbet.
  • On The Smurfs, Gargamel couldn't stand smurfberries. Peewitt didn't like them much either, suggesting they aren't fit for human consumption, although the ogre Big Mouth loves them.
  • In Code Lyoko, Odd is a Big Eater who'll eat almost anything. He doesn't like sushi, however, telling Yumi's mom that he "didn't care for" it in one episode where she offered it.
    • He also wasn't happy in one episode when the cafeteria was serving peas and carrots - again.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:
    • Pizza may be the heroes' Trademark Favorite Food but Splinter doesn't like it, at least in the 1987 version. In fact, in one episode, when he and the Shredder are victims of a Freaky Friday Flip, seeing "Splinter" enjoy it is the first thing that makes the Turtles suspicious. At the end of the episode, when the two are supposedly switched back to normal, Michelangelo offers him a slice just to make sure; when he is repulsed by it, they're certain it's the real Splinter. Of course, this is probably justified due to the Turtles' choices of toppings.
    • April turned up her nose at pizza too in the pilot, preferring the sushi Splinter gave her, but she'd get used to it later. Consequently, Donatello expresses his dislike of sushi in the same scene.
    • Whether the Turtles like anchovies or not depends on the continuity. They have no problems with them in the aforementioned cartoon, but Mikey doesn't like them in the first live-action movie, emphasizing this when ordering for delivery. Shredder, on the other hand, clearly does not like them in the 1987 version, given how he reacts when Michelangelo hits him in the face with a pizza with anchovy topping.
    • In another episode, Shredder is upset that he has been "reduced" to eating take-out Chinese food.
  • Batman: The Animated Series
    • Harley Quinn hates fish. Eating them makes her sick, and she's not too keen on handling them either. She will try to tough it out for the Joker's sake if one of his plans involves them, though.
    • One-off character Charlie Collins from "The Joker's Favor" hates meatloaf. However, after surviving his ordeal with the Joker, he says even that would taste good.

"Right now anything looks good, even meatloaf."

  • In The Batman, The Joker once kidnapped several people and said they had all wronged him. One was the top psychiatrist at Arkham, with the Joker yelling, "Bagley, how many times do I have to tell you, I hate macaroni and cheese!"
  • Miraculous Ladybug:
  • My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: Dash really hates pie (any flavor of pie) and for years never had the courage to tell Pinkie Pie to stop giving them to her as gifts.
  • In The Emperor's New Groove, Yzma isn't too fond of gravy, or at least dishes that use too much of it, as she complains about such dishes at a restaurant she and Kronk are dining at. She also hates spinach puffs - at least the way Kronk makes them.
  • In the 2017 reboot of Duck Tales, Louie hates hot dogs. When the boys and Webby are planning a boat trip in one episode, Webby suggests dressing like hot dogs, so when they get lost (as they always do) he wouldn't try to eat them when he went mad with hunger. Louie actually seems to acknowledge this as a good idea.
  • Harley Quinn:
    • The Joker isn't fond of raisins, and becomes furious at Harley for bringing him raisin pudding. He's a little embarrassed when she tells him they're actually chocolate chips, which he does like.
    • Toyman hates noodles so much that he crashes Nightwing's funeral with his Mini-Mecha in order to destroy a noodle vendor's truck.
  • In the mostly-forgotten series Popeye and Son, Junior hates spinach; unfortunately for him, he often has to force himself to eat it, as it gives him the same strength boost it does for his dad.
  • Everybody in Looney Tunes shorts seems to have a problem with onions; whenever someone is cooking something (like Bugs does in "French Rarebit") someone tells him to "Hold the onions!"
  • In Kim Possible, Ron may be a Big Eater, but clearly hates sushi; when he is chosen to be an exchange student for a school in Japan, he's more than willing, but says, "If push any of that raw fish on me, I swear I'll chuck."
  • Alastor from Hazbin Hotel considers himself a gourmet, and as such will not eat processed foods, including canned meat, Easy-Mac, or ketchup.
  • In Star Trek: Lower Decks, Boimler really hates raisins, seeing as his family is in the business of producing and dealing them; while growing up, he was around them all the time. In the episode "Grounded" he has to work on his family's vineyard while the crew is on mandatory furlough, and he is clearly miserable, not at all aroused by the attractive young female hired hands trying to hit on him.

Real Life

  • Initially, children and vegetables (they generally contain substances that taste bitter even to adults). Over time, as they grow older, some grow to love them.
  • George H. W. Bush: "I do not like broccoli. And I haven't liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And I'm President of the United States and I'm not going to eat any more broccoli."
    • Broccoli farmers sent 20,000 pounds of broccoli to the White House in protest. We're guessing he didn't eat it.
  • This guy really really hates vegetables.
  • Pythagoras (of Pythagorean Theorem fame) was known for his hatred of beans. To wit, Pythagoreanism was a religion based off his work and philosophy, and beans were verboten in said religion, deemed "unclean."
  • H.P. Lovecraft was allergic to seafood. This explains the cephalopoidic and piscine nature of a great many of the monsters that appeared in his works. It probably didn't help that he lived in New England, where seafood can be a little hard to avoid.
  • For some, a food allergy is the reason why they would avoid a certain food.
  • Gordon Ramsay and the Trope Namer; he makes no secret of how much he hates SPAM. In fact, he claims this is one big reason why he became a chef to begin with, he was so sick of processed food, which he recalls his parents tended to use a lot of.
  • Gwyneth Paltrow notoriously said, "I'd rather smoke crack than eat cheese from a can." It didn't exactly go over well.
  1. The use of "spam" to describe junk e-mail is actually indirectly derived from the Monty Python sketch.
  2. As in, by eating them, possibly the one time in his life he ever became full.
  3. Wine lovers "know" that fish is "properly" served with white wine.
  4. Makes much more sense when you know that grapes and raisins cause kidney failure in cats very rapidly - they're one of the most deadly food items a cat could eat
