Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

A list of the other characters of the Wei Kingdom in the Dynasty Warriors series.

Cai Wenji

"The Talented Lady of Woe"

"I have no reservations about taking to the battlefield if it helps end this chaos."

Voiced by: Miku Yoshikawa (Japanese), Erin Fitzgerald (English)

Born: 177
Died: (Unknown)
Japanese spelling: Saibunki

Height: 5'5" (165cm)

Cai (Wang) Wenji is a beautiful poet and talented musician who excels in her studies. She was kidnapped by a group of nomads and lived an unhappy life until Cao Cao rescued her and returned her home.

Although she would prefer to resume her everyday life of serenity, Cai Wenji is disturbed by the turbulent age surrounding her. In order to restore peace, she decides to personally assist in the battlefield.

  • Ascended Extra - Her debut was an in-game custom created officer in DW6: Empires. Strikeforce 2 gave her a unique character design, while 7 fully entered her into the Wei Kingdom's character lineup.
    • She appeared earlier in Kessen II as "Cai Wengi" and was portrayed much as an Ax Crazy barbarian witch.
  • Brainy Brunette - Was able to write down all of her father's numerous writings just from memory. She also was a famous writer in her own right.
    • Cao Cao himself greatly benefited from her in this regard.
  • Chekhov's Gun If you rescue her from bandits in DW9, it just seemslike you got a quest reward and her on your team. However, she plays a role later: She provides a distraction for the guards around the imperial palace that aids your infiltration.
  • Disproportionate Retribution - In DW6: Empires, one would hope so...otherwise, what could she have done that was so bad that every single soldier and nature itself wants her dead?
  • Love Interest - Notable as the only female character in the cast that averts being one. She pursues none as a love interest after her introduction and her relationship with Cao Cao lacks even the mildest hints of being anything other than platonic. Justified because she married another man after Cao Cao rescued her.
  • Morality Pet - Cao Cao shows great kindness to her. It was he who rescued her from nomads and provided her with a new life.
    • Turned into a Historical In-Joke in a Wei bonus stage where she goes missing and the other Wei officers panic when they consider what might happen if Cao Cao found out she came to harm.
    • We even get to see and participate in said rescue early on in DW9.
  • Musical Assassin - Prior to DW7, her weapon is a Chinese violin. She currently uses a harp.
  • Rescue Romance - Averted. Cao Cao rescues her from enemies, but they seem to be more like friends and she marries a different man afterwards.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: A classy lady with the inner steel to join the battle field. Her poetry and music are moving.
  • Token Good Teammate - Perhaps even moreso than Cao Ren. Cai Wenji definitely contrasts with the other ambitious Wei characters, with her honest-to-God serene, compassionate personality.
  • Token Wholesome - Compared to the other female characters in the series. Ironically, this has made her very popular with many fans.
    • Her outfit is very chaste even having fully covering pants under her skirt to prevent any hint of a Panty Shot when she jumps.
  • Warrior Poet - Known for her poetry throughout the land.
  • Whip It Good: In DW9.
  • The Woobie - Considered a tragic beauty. This is reflected in her poetry.

Poem of Sorrow and Anger

My dwelling is often covered by frost and snow,
The foreign winds bring again spring and summer;

They gently blow into my robes,
And chillingly shrill into my ear;

Emotions stirred, I think of my parents,
Whilst I draw a long sigh of endless sorrows.

Whenever guests visit from afar,
I would often make joy of their tidings;

I lost no time in throwing eager questions,
Only to find that the guests were not from my home town.
