Complete Monster: Jim - first he ends up destroying Edward's reputation by having him framed for robbery in his house, then when Edward accidentally makes a cut on the palm of Kim's hand, he says that Edward had intentionally harmed her and uses this as an opportunity to attack him. His greatest moment of evil is during the climax when he tries to kill Edward by shooting him in cold blood. Even when Kim tries to protect Edward he simply kicks her away. Seriously, what Kim ever saw in this thuggish brute to become his girlfriend is still a mystery.
- Not to mention the fact that he makes his friend drive them around while obviously drunk, which results in them almost running down Kevin with their van, prevented only due to Edward rescuing him.
Crowning Moment of Funny: Edward's first experience with a water bed. It didn't end well.
Crowning Moment of Heartwarming: The "Ice Dance" scene.
Crowning Music of Awesome: It's called "The Grand Finale" on the soundtrack album for a reason.
- Danny Elfman has named it (the whole thing) as his personal favorite of his own scores.
The Cutie: Edward, with his innocence.
Epileptic Trees: Is this a huge metaphor for mental disorders? If so, that makes it ten times more disturbing and depressing.
Freudian Excuse: Jim's father might be an even bigger asshole than Jim is. Judging from what Jim says, he's a very selfish and ruthless hardass (ruthless enough to prosecute his own son for breaking an entry and attempted theft), and at times Jim seems almost afraid of him. This may explain why Jim turned out so bad.
- That could be a Blatant Lies Jim invented to justify himself. Anyway it don't save him from being an evil murderous jerk.
He Really Can Act : Johnny Depp.
Hilarious in Hindsight: Johnny Depp plays a guy with scissors for hands. When you consider that his he was one of Freddy Krueger's victims in his first film, it's kinda funny.
- Its even funnier when they were casting the remake of Nightmare on Elm Street. Depp was one of the original choices to play Freddy.
- The film has this effect on The Breakfast Club, as it's a bit jarring to see Anthony Michael Hall go from a sweet, picked-on nerd to a slightly more psychotic version of John Bender.
Misaimed Marketing: In the mid-'90s, this was repackaged on VHS as one of Fox's "Family Features", even though it's rated PG-13. Guess that makes Jim's death at Edward's blades a Family-Unfriendly Death.
Tear Jerker: If you've seen it, you know why.
Ugly Cute: This trope applies to Edward both in-story and outside it.
