Emergency Services Regular

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

If a character has a history of problems, someone from Emergency Services is likely to help out to the point of getting to know the character. This could be either somebody from the police, firefighters, paramedics, or another emergency group. It can happen to the point where someone like a police officer would simply say, "Here we go again". However, this can also happen if the character works for the Emergency Services, since many services will send a person who knows about the situation when possible. This situation can also apply in a school setting, as schools can have their own set of services.

Examples of Emergency Services Regular include:

Anime and Manga

  • Yu Yu Hakusho: Yusuke Urameshi, a Delinquent, has his own seat reserved at the principal's office.
  • A Certain Magical Index: Touma is in the hospital so often that his doctor (and it's always the same doctor) wonders whether he has a nurse fetish.

Fan Works

  • Numerous Harry Potter fan works joke about how a certain bed in the Hogwarts hospital wing should be reserved -- possibly with a permanently-mounted brass plaque -- for Harry Potter's semi-annual stay therein.

Live-Action TV

  • Home Improvement has Tim taking one of his sons to the hospital thanks to an injury. With the addition of having a TV Show and his antics, it's implied Tim is a regular, even knowing the staff and having a coffee mug there. It also helps to know the times he finds himself injured after joking about it.
  • Student Bodies, a Canadian series, had an episode titled "Detention" with a group of high school Delinquents who are regulars. Cody quips with they "get their mail" in detention.

Western Animation

  • Hey Arnold! character, Eugene, has a track record of injuries. In fact, in "Stuck In A Tree", Eugene tells Chocolate Boy to tell the firefighters on being sent since they know him. Arnold just gives the "Why am I not surprised?" look.
  • The Simpsons has this as a running gag, thanks to Homer and Bart.
    • "Worst Episode Ever": When Homer is dared to eat expired baking soda, Lisa just calls to tell Fran at the Poison Control for a "Heads Up".
    • It was revealed in "Parent Rap" that the Simpsons are regulars at court, even one of the few family things they do.
  • Family Guy
    • Season 3 episode, "Lethal Weapons", Quagmire had to call for help after his penis gets caught in the window, which it seems to happen.
    • Season 11 episode, "The Old Man and the Big 'C'", Joe knows the staff at the waiting room, as he's a police officer.

Real Life

  • In places where community policing exists, local police get to know the people in their communities.
  • Quite commonly noticed among emergency room personnel, more among those that can't afford care than those injury-prone. Problem is most of the regulars don't realize the same people keep treating them. Many of them are (often belligerent) drunks/druggies/homeless and not particularly well-liked by those who have to deal with them.
