Evil Matriarch/Playing With
Basic Trope: The mother of a character makes his or her life a living hell.
- Straight: Alice's mother, Betty, is one of the villains.
- Exaggerated: Alice's mother, Queen Betty the Terrible, is the ultimate Big Bad.

- Betty has a serious Freudian Excuse which resulted in a power-complex, and refuse to acknowledge that Alice might have better ideas than her.
- Betty is trying to discourage Alice from the dangerous 'hero life'.

- Betty is the closest thing to a Big Good Alice and co has.
- Alice treats her mother badly.
- Betty goes out of her way to ruin Alice's life and foil her plans...but Alice is The Big Bad, and Betty The Hero.
- Subverted: Betty might seems to be in league with the villains, except that she's The Reverse Mole there, to keep them from harming her daughter.
- Double Subverted: That's what she says, while in reality she's just in it for the power and doesn't give a damn about Alice's heroic ideals.
- Parodied: a first-time pregnant girl reads a book labeled "From nubile to Evil Overlord: a mother's guide".

- Lampshaded: "Takes the definition of 'bad mother' to another whole new level, she is."
