  • In The Phoenix and the Carpet, the Phoenix makes a poem about itself, calling itself lovely. It claims that it only put in the word "lovely" because it fit. Jane points out that there are a lot of less kind words it could have used.
  • In The Story of the Amulet, The Psammead goes to the boys' school with them. An authority figure mentions that he wishes for all the boys to grow up with qualities such as being virtuous and bold. Anthea laments that the girls' school didn't get a similar wish, but Jane just says that girls can grow up with those qualities on their own, but boys need magical help.
