Forum:Deleting TVT Prudery/Censorship

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.
Forums: Index Trope Talk

I just navigated into Fanfic Recs (I don't think I ever saw the restructured page before I left TVT) and was kind of appalled at the introductory text. Like the stuff Vorticity pointed out over in the DW Forums today, there's an incredible ... reek of arrogance to some of it. "Yes, we know that's not the textbook definition. It's our definition, and we're sticking to it.", for instance. We really need to pare this down a bit, strip out the TVT prudery and control-freakery, and make it more compatible with our stated policies. Anyone got any ideas for a more acceptable alternative? And are there other pages just as much in need of a thwack about the head to make them sensible? -- Looney Toons (talk) 19:35, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

I'm not sure what needs to be done here, but feel free to suggest ideas. GethN7 (talk) 19:58, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Heck, I changed all of the links to Five P to redirect to Censorship Board to get started, but there's a mountain of this stuff. It all comes off as somewhere between Get Off My Lawn and "I need to tell every last one of you assholes not to fuck up my website". If anything, <!-- the inline comments --> are even more patronizing.

My advice is this:

  • Anything that relates to censorship can just be edited out. I am very careful to say that we do in fact censor entries -- I'm not afraid of the word. But the main considerations are being Safe For Work (i.e. no porn) and being on-topic.
  • Phrase as much as you can using positive terminology. "Be Safe For Work". "Mark NSFW links".
  • Encourage people to avoid Zero Context Examples.
  • Look for old versions in the Internet Archive, when things were a little less crazy. Anything before July 2012 is fair game. Be sure to note the source as TVT in the edit comment. (Or in TVT-speak: Don't make illegal edits that violate copyrights.)

I can't do this all myself, so please start editing the policies like that. Vorticity (talk) 20:13, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
