If someone showed me the current image and asked me what is going on, and I didn't recognize where it was from, I probably would have guessed someone was getting his soul sucked out.

As such, I'd like to replace it with some panels of this image: https://www.oglaf.com/withsympathy/

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Bumping this discussion - the current image is still non-indicative, and the proposed replacement is still on the web.

Oh, and I like the proposed replacement.

Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

Voting no for using the image in full. When this image is shrunk to the size of a page image, it is difficult to read the text, and not everyone will click a "larger version" button while browsing to see it in full.

Voting yes for using only the first three panels.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

I agree that the first three panels of the Oglaf strip would make for a good page image.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Not waiting five more years to bump the thread again. It's been over two weeks, we have fourish "yes" votes and no "no" votes. Shall we go ahead and do those first three panels?

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Haggishunter (talkcontribs)

I vote yes for the 3-paneller

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

I like said comic, let's keep it.

GentlemensDame883 (talkcontribs)

I like the three-panel too.

Jlaw (talkcontribs)

Love the three-panel. Voting for it

HeneryVII (talkcontribs)

I like Robkeik's idea.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Yes.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

I think it's obvious where the vote is going. Image swap is complete.

Utini501 (talkcontribs)

Throwing in a very late "yes" to the image swap!

Image copyright policy

Damian Yerrick (talkcontribs)

What does Miraheze's move on paper to Britain mean for ATT's image use policy? I seem to remember that EU and ex-EU countries observe a narrower definition of fair dealing than USA fair use.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

A little late in replying... sorry about that.

It means that we have been under UK copyright law for the past four years. The UK offers an "encyclopedia" exception in their Fair Dealing, so as long as we maintain our earlier rules, we're good.

With the possibility of Miraheze moving out of the UK before the end of 2023, this answer may need to be updated.

Summary by Robkelk

Image of a hole that is black was replaced by one that showed gravitational lensing around a black hole.

Nerdanel (talkcontribs)

The image on the Black Holes page is scientifically inaccurate. It just shows a slightly fuzzy black sphere against a generic starry background. A realistic version would show the background being distorted by gravitational lensing caused by the black hole's gravity bending the light that passes near it, and the black hole's edges should be sharp. Maybe there could be an accretion disk too.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

That does sound like an important issue to fix, so anything that is more accurate you can find would be good to replace the image with.

Goo Monster (talkcontribs)

What kind of name is "File:N158106a 1049.jpg"

3
Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

File:N158106a 1049.jpg has a ridiculously unhelpful name which tells us nothing about the image itself. I propose we rename it to something more helpful like "Wintersmith cover".

Per All The Tropes:Uploading and Adding an Image to a Page, "A lot of websites use long strings of letters and numbers for their filenames. We'd rather not have that. Before you upload anything to us, please make sure it has a human-readable name that's somehow relevant to the image's content and/or origins." The only relevant things about that name are the "N", which appears in "Wintersmith", and "a", which appears in "Terry Pratchett".

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

I see renaming files to something that can be understood by humans as wiki maintenance, not something that requires discussion. The file has been renamed.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

And thank you for bringing it to our attention.

Summary by Ilikecomputers

Unanimous vote to replace.

Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

File:Laputa.jpg, used on the Castle in the Sky page, isn't the best. It's quite small, and undetailed, meaning it's difficult for the image to do its job of illustrating the trope. In my opinion, the ideal width should be around double the image's current size. Plus, there appears to be a very faint watermark on the top right, further diminishing the usability of the image.

Thus, I suggest that we upload a new version of the image, then update the licensing information accordingly. This is the same image, taken from the same movie, only it's larger and has better quality. Bonus: since it's from Ghibli's library of non commercial reusable images under common sense, we have the copyright holder's permission to use the image. Taking the image from an official source is always better than stating "this file is from TV Tropes" because it gives creators exposure.

Pinging the usual folks, although anyone is free to leave a comment.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Agreed that we should replace an image that we're using under Fair Dealing with an image that we can use with permission.

Vote to replace.

Biomaster (talkcontribs)

Gonna vote yes, especially considering the new image is fair use while being far above the original in terms of quality.

Agiletek (talkcontribs)

Seems good. Yes.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Yes.

ThunderKat (talkcontribs)

Looks good to me.

Haggishunter (talkcontribs)

Yep, looks a good replacement to me.

Our policy on category images?

3
Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

I've added a category image for Tiny Tropes, but am wondering do we need the images at all on categories? Some like Feline Tropes and Princess Tropes do have one; most don't. I'm just wondering if I can continue to add images to the categories.

Is there a policy for adding too many images from the same creator in a row? Because Studio Ghibli and their index of common-sense reusable images is just too good.

Just asking the admins here.

@Labster @Looney Toons @GethN7 @Robkelk @QuestionableSanity @Derivative @SelfCloak

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

I don't think we have a policy for category images, actually. Many of the images on category pages came from when the text was on separate trope pages. Other images are there to add to the explanations. And I've added at least one image to a category because it was funny.

As for too many images from a single creator... well, if the particular creator doesn't like that, they'll let us know.

Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

Thanks!

How explicit page images are allowed to be?

2
HLIAA14YOG (talkcontribs)

The problem with finding images for pornographic or even only semi-erotic works is how most of the image used to promote it are sexually suggestive and I tend to avoid them, but sometimes I never find something that isn't explicit or extremely suggestive and the safe-for-work images I do find are basically random scenes that seem to do little in showing what the work is about.

The "uploading and adding images to a page" page did not help me on that regard.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

We typically go for the "bare minimum needed to get the point across" level. For the purposes of doing so, we usually use the safest "official" images available when possible. For the purposes of not being more lewd than needed, if you need to pixelate or censor an official image to avoid showing nudity, that is preferred if there is nothing safer to use.

Galgo (talkcontribs)

Hi! I'm new on edits on the site. I wanted to change the image for shotoclone since it's a fanart with a different tone from capcom style. Is there a chance to upload an official image or a licenced image with a similar concept of showing ryu and ken similarities?

Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

First up, you should provide a link to the image you want to use, or at least the page the image is on. That way, we can all see what it looks like and make a decision.

Second, you need to get a consensus. I believe consensus around here is a poll that lasts for at least 48 hours and has three more 'yes' votes than 'no' votes. You have an implicit 'yes' vote, so in reality you only need to get two people to agree with you. These voting guidelines are laid out in All The Tropes:How to Get a Rule Changed. Once that's done, you can upload your image. Please see All The Tropes:Uploading and Adding an Image to a Page to do that.

Friendly tip: you can use the {{admins}} template to ping the admins, which should ensure they respond faster. Type in {{, then a popup should appear, where you can type in "admins", or alternatively switch to source editing mode (see that pen in the bottom right corner?) and just type in the text.

Anyway, welcome to All the Tropes! I hope you have a good time, and it's good to see that you listened to the admins and came here.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

We apologize for any difficulty that you had in finding this forum page. A recent update to our provider Miraheze seems to have broken our forums plugin, something we only discovered after directing you there. We're dealing with this now.

In the mean time, allow me to direct you to this thread on the talk page for Hayao Miyazaki to show you what a page change proposal should look like.

Summary by Goo Monster

I think the current picture is better and no one else weighed in.

Goo Monster (talkcontribs)

I think the current picture is fine. However, if you think this one is better, then I'll replace it anyways.

Summary by Goo Monster

Decided to implement the change.
