Why didn't they prevent the fall of the colonies?

  • If they had reliable, safe Time Travel with at least a forty-year range (1980 to 1940 and back), why the hell didn't they use it to go back to before the start of the original series to prevent the Cylons from attacking the Colonies in the first place?
