Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • The Student Council comes to "ask" Miho to join tankery at Oarai. Momo and Yuzu take up positions at the front of the classroom, and then Anzu stands between them. The two on the sides are seen from just below the bust on up. Anzu (142 cm) is seen from the eyebrows up, until the view pans down to show the rest of her face — which means now 164-cm Momo's eyes are completely out of the picture; Yuzu's eyes are almost entirely out of frame as well.
  • Miho's friends react to hearing she'll have to do the Ankou (Anglerfish) Dance if she loses in the upcoming battle.

Saori: The Ankou dance? That's way too embarrassing. If you dance that, you'll never be able to get married.
Yukari: That would totally get uploaded to the net and sent to everyone across the country.
Hana: You'll never be able to live it down.
Maho: Is that dance really that bad?

Miho dancing with wide, dazed "swirly" eyes, blush, mouth hanging open.
Saori: I can't get married now!
Yukari: Well, we can't do anything about it now!
Hana: If you think of it as embarrassing, it'll just make it more embarrassing!
Cut to Anzu dancing with a grin.

  • Saori's romantic "exploit". When Team Anglerfish happens to cross paths with Hana's mother and Shinzaburo, she starts narrating out loud:

Saori: Oh! Our eyes magically met! *Shinzaburo turns, and smiles.* Wait -- he can't -- ?!
Hana: Shinzaburo?
Saori: You know him?! *Shinzaburo brings the rickshaw over.* N-nice to meet you, I'm Hana's -- *Shinzaburo walks past.* -- friend -- uh...

    • And then, in episode 10:

Saori: I have a very important announcement to make! This whole time --
Yukari: You're engaged?!
Hana: Even though you don't have a boyfriend?
Saori: THAT'S NOT IT! [She's actually gotten her amateur level 2 radio license.]

  • Episode 6: Oryou, the StuG III driver, composes poetry while Saunders chases them (and her vehicle can't shoot back):

Oryou: A tank filled with holes.
For that is what we shall be.
Boom we go, goodbye.
Caesar: This isn't time to say a parting Haiku!

  • Miho's reaction to Graceful Loser/Friendly Rival Kay Glomping her: Blank White Eyes, some of her hair standing on end, Sweat Drops....
  • Katyusha insists she gave Oarai time to think over her surrender demand not because she wanted to take time for a meal and nap, but "because Katyusha has a very kind heart! Kind of like the Siberian plain is wide!" Nonna asks if that means Katyusha's heart is "made of ice, too?"
  • The Jagdpanther commander (Fan Nickname "Jagdpanther-chan") flailing her arms when the Hetzer shoots and breaks her track for the second time in less than an hour.

We just fixed that! Hey! Our track is really heavy!

    • Another of her nicknames is "Ritaiko," "Track girl."
  • The response of Duck Team when the Maus commander angrily ordered them to get their "light tank" off her huge tank:

Noriko Isobe: Don't wanna. Besides, the Type 89 isn't a light tank.
Akebi Sasaki: It's a medium tank.

  • Rabbit Team is racing around the block to get behind Kuromorimine's Elefant. Navigator Yuuki tells Karina, the driver, to take a right turn at the next street, and Karina acknowledges, "Yes!" Yuuki adds, "Right after that, and after that, and after that!" Karina replies, "Yes! Yes! Yes!"
  • In OVA 1, "Water War", Yukari gives her (very accurate) estimate of Miho's bust, waist, and hip measurements. At each number, Miho, greatly embarrassed, moves her hands to cover the area cited, even though she's still fully clothed.
  • OVA 6, "Banquet War", includes a short-notice talent contest. One requirement is:

Momo: We will now have each team participate in a hidden talents competition. Each team will be prohibited from doing things they are skilled in. Leopons: nothing to do with cars. Anteaters: no internet games. Hippos: nothing to do with history. Ducks: nothing to do with volleyball. Anglerfish: no dancing the Ankou Dance.

    • The various teams protest having their specialties "taken" from them. Saori says, "The Ankou Dance...! We're fine if you take that, actually."
    • Anglerfish Team then puts on a skit in which they're a Sentai group battling "the evil Student Council."
  • Yukari sneaks onto other schools' ships (Saunders and Anzio) as pre-match "reconnaissance," each time making an audiovisual recording — to which she attaches Closing Credits, including "special thanks" to the schools she was spying on.
  • It's a bit META, but a couple of viewers commented on a scene from OVA 7, "This is the Real Anzio Battle!", in which Hippo Team fires at Anglerfish during practice. One viewer remarked that Miho doesn't flinch at all as the StuG III's shot flies past her. Another replied, "Look at her face. Miho is genuinely disappointed at your marksmanship."
    • When Anglerfish fires back, Oryou, Saemonza, and Erwin are shown reacting to the impact of the Panzer IV's shot. It's still the relatively low-velocity short-barreled 75mm gun, not yet the upgraded version, and at a range of 1500 meters, but the Hippo girls are very shaken by the hit. Oryou has "X" eyes, Erwin has swirly eyes, and Saemonza has a wide, wavering stream of tears down each cheek. "Practice ammo or not, that stings!"[1]
  • During practice for the Anzio battle, a burst of machine gun fire from Duck Team goads Turtle Team — specifically Momo, because Anzu refuses to take charge and Yuzu is just driving where she's told — into chasing them all over the place. The chase becomes a Funny Background Event for Hippo's shoot-out with Anglerfish. Then Duck leads Turtle in circles around Rabbit Team, and one of the sillier Rabbit girls remarks, "You'll all turn into butter."[2]
  • When Duck Team shoots Pepperoni's CV.33 tankette, it crashes and winds up basically standing on its tail, almost straight up. Then Pepperoni opens the hatch, leans out too quickly, loses her balance, and frantically waves her arms in circles for a second or three before falling out of her tankette.
  • In Der Film, Chi-Ha-Tan Academy, which bases itself on the principles of the Imperial Japanese Army, tries a "Banzai charge" and gets slaughtered. They're allied with Oarai at the moment, and Miho orders a retreat and regroup, which horrifies the two surviving Chi-Ha-Tan tank commanders. "Turn our backs to the enemy?!" One of them continues to protest — while Mallard Team's Char B1 repeatedly shoves her light tank toward the rally point.
  • Later in Der Film, Miho visits her old bedroom at the Nishizumi Big Fancy House. Everything has been left unchanged ... including the Panzerfaust anti-tank weapon adorned with a pink ribbon tied in a bow. Why does a tankery player even have an infantry anti-tank weapon?
  • At the start of a Bar Brawl in Das Finale, a bad-tempered Huge Sailor Girl attacks Miho ... who apologetically dodges every punch or kick the other girl throws. As a crowning touch, Miho bows just as the big girl rushes her, the top of her head meets the pit of the attacker's stomach, and then our heroine straightens up, accidentally lifting the sailor off the deck JUST by straightening up (Miho's got some neck and waist muscles!), and unintentionally throws her to knock down three more sailor girls. Then the fight escalates as the sailors pull weapons....

Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu!

  • Recap Episode 10.5 revealed that Nonna keeps a "Katyusha diary." In spinoff manga Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu!, Katyusha believes this is a list of things she's done that Nonna might feel a grudge about; one of them, she imagines, is "Cheeky despite being small." Thinking that (accidentally) poking Nonna in both eyes pushed it entirely too far[3], Katyusha goes into the Pose of Supplication, waving a little white flag, and ready to offer money and what might be a favorite model tank with her apology. (It's hinted the diary actually describes things Nonna finds especially cute about Katyusha.)
  • After cleaning the Swimming Club's spare pool, the tankery team will have a pool party. Well, it turns out to be after Sodoko of the Morals Committee gets fed up with the others' silly horseplay and summons over 100 Morals Committee members who all look as if they're her relatives to do all the cleaning themselves. "Just As Planned," the Student Council president chuckles; even Momo is grinning.
  • Alisa comes to spy on Oarai. Her Paper-Thin Disguise consists of dark glasses with an attached bulbous nose that doesn't even remotely match the color of her skin. Oh, and falsies to upgrade her bust size. "I'm just an American who loves Panzerkraft~!" The Automotive Club recognize that she's a suspicious character (everybody who notices her recognizes that) and bring her to the rest of the tankery team, where she realizes she's infiltrated ... the pool party. And then she finds that Kay and Naomi were invited!
  • Darjeeling reads a novel about "earnest love" at an all-girls school and it gives her ideas ... such as inviting Orange Pekoe to call her "Onee-Sama." Then Darjeeling and Assam get into a Tug Lover War over the smaller girl. Though petite, Orange Pekoe is, as a narrative note points out, the tank gun's loader, and she's thus strong enough to Put Their Heads Together.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: When Darjeeling decides to act as a Meido and serve food to her subordinates:

Orange Pekoe: Aren't Darjeeling-sama's cooking skills... Are you familiar with them?
Beat Panel
Assam: It's not like we're going to die.
Orange Pekoe: I hope so...

  • Maho holding a Christmas Party for her tank commanders. In a Sexy Santa Dress.
    • Erika arrives wearing a reindeer costume (it seems she's got a touch more grasp of playfulness than most Kuromorimine girls). Her comrades, though, quickly convince her they've been called together for a chewing-out, and she panics just like the others.
    • Maho pulls out a karaoke machine, and since she doesn't know any pop music, she puts the Kuromorimine School Anthem on the playlist and asks her commanders to add their favorites. Since they're still mostly convinced she's building up to punish them for losing to Oarai, they all add the same thing.
    • Alas, Maho's skills don't include cutting cake, as she slices the cake Miho sent into irregularly curved segments of odd sizes.
    • Maho shows off her "hidden talent" of imitation. Swiftly doing her hair up in Darjeeling's braid, she raises a teacup and asks, "Do you know this saying?" Erika recognizes the line that follows as a quote from Heinz Guderian,[4] one of the architects of Germany's (and thus Kuromorimine's, and indeed much of our modern world's) tank doctrine, but doesn't recognize that just now Maho is imitating Darjeeling saying it. In any case, quoting the Sun Tzu of tankery does not reassure her commanders....
    • After the commanders realize that Maho really just wants to spend Christmas with them, it's time for presents[5]! The Maus commander is ... displeased ... to find the gift she receives is a model of the Type 89 which climbed onto her tank; likewise, Jagdpanther-chan isn't happy to get a Hetzer model (during their match, her tank was dogged by the Oarai Student Council's Hetzer, which broke her tracks twice). A Panther commander who panicked when Turtle Team slipped into the formation gets another Hetzer, and declares it's "all kinds of strange" for there to be two Hetzers among the presents. And Erika is given an Anglerfish dance costume. (Maho thinks their barely-contained tears are from joy.) She gets some kind of plushie jellyfish or tentacle monster[6], which she declares is cute.
      • Oddly, the scene of presents being handed out seems to indicate they're given at random (passing them around a circle while singing a song, keep the one you're holding when the song stops), and yet as noted above they tend to be appropriate to the girls who receive them.
    • Finally, Maho takes a picture of the "party" to send to Miho. She has her usual serious face, Erika is wearing the Anglerfish costume and scowling, Koume Akaboshi (the girl who thanked Miho for saving her life last year, and the only one other than Maho who likes her gift[7]) is smiling nervously, and the other commanders have Hidden Eyes.

"Thanks really happy please wait expectingly for return gift."

    • Meanwhile, at St. Gloriana:

Darjeeling: Speaking of Christmas, do you know this saying? There's this joke associated with Christmas...
Orange Pekoe: (Soul flies up to Heaven)

  • Anzu, using the alias "The Masked Hetzer," continues to taunt the Kuromorimine commanders with gifts reminding them of the battle. For Valentine's Day, she sends chocolate tanks, which they eat angrily.
  • While Oarai and Kuromorimine girls are afoot in an unfamiliar town, they bump into each other. Specifically, the Maus commander bumps into Duck Team. "Meeting us here is your doom, light tank!" Meanwhile, her friends Jagdpanther-chan and the Panther commander demand, with teary eyes, that the Hetzer crew come out to face them. Turtle Team are sneaking away behind them.
  • Katyusha dozes off while sharing a bath with Nonna. A handful of snow between the shoulder blades wakes her up.
  • "It Came From the Sea," "it" being a Kaiju version of Araippe[6], and the Oarai Tankery Team must defend Japan while the JGSDF mobilizes. This turns out to be a movie made, apparently, by Oarai's Film Club. St. Gloriana received a copy, and Darjeeling starts getting ideas....
  • Narrative text declares "The disgusting thing came out" in Rabbit Team's M3. "G! It's a G!!" (Short for "gokiburi," Japanese for cockroach.) Not only is it almost never called anything but "G," but the roach is always drawn as a capital letter "G" which probably escaped from Sesame Street.
  • During a party (in kimono), Oarai members tell spooky stories. Hippo and Duck Teams, though, reveal a bit of Comically Missing the Point with their tales of encountering odd creatures: Hippo ignored the cryptid they found because they were seeking a different type instead, and Duck mistook Bigfoot for a mundane creepy stranger. Also, Miho tells how her big sister shot down a UFO.
  • Duck Team finds a satchel full of lots of money ... plus a pistol and a ski mask. (These are props belonging to the Drama Club.) The Reaction Shot is greatly exaggerated, with Akebi's eyeballs literally popping out of their sockets. Further Hilarity Ensues as Duck believes they have to Clear Our Name and fight the rest of Oarai to do so....
  • When Mika of Continuation School tells a "somewhat mysterious tale" to her comrades Aki and Mikko, she unsurprisingly provides background music on her ever-present kantele. Very, very high-quality scary background music; the story's climax and accompanying Scare Chord causes the other two girls, seated on a log, to fall over backward.
  • Saori gives Mako a new alarm clock. Instead of ringing, beeping, or buzzing, it talks to her:

"Mako~~ Wake up~~
"Mako~
"WAKE UP! We're in the middle of a match!
"AAH! It's the enemy! They're here! Behind us! MAKO~~!
"Just kidding ☆ Good morning, Mako!"

  1. Anglerfish shot them at pointblank range just shortly before, so it's odd that they seem so stunned by this shot.
  2. Referring to a children's book from the late 19th Century in which tigers chasing each other around a tree melted into butter; the book is now regarded as racist in the West due to stereotyping of the human main character, but The Other Wiki says it remains popular in Japan.
  3. Although she rated it as only half as many grudge points as her cheekiness
  4. Maho quoted it in Episode 10.
  5. Sent by Oarai; there's a hint that most were picked out by Student Council President Anzu Kadotani
  6. 6.0 6.1 An article from Asahi Shimbun says this is “Araippe,” created in 2013 to be a mascot for the Oarai area in the hope of improving tourism after the Fukushima nuclear reactor disaster. “Araippe” is portrayed as made up of local seafood specialties. His "tentacles" are actually whitebait (immature fish) and his mouth is a clam. His tail is a clam rake.
  7. A model of a Panzer IV which she noted is like Miho's
