The Mikos
Motomiya Akane - the Dragon-God/White Dragon Miko (voiced by Kawakami Tomoko)
- Accidental Kiss: With Yorihisa in the manga.
- Chaste Heroine/Oblivious to Love: In Hachiyou Shou, most of the time; though it was required to allow for Multiple Endings.
- Foe Yay: Clearly falls for Akuram after seeing his face, which causes her a bit of trouble throughout the story.
- Identical Stranger: Akane-hime, from one manga/anime story.
- Ordinary High School Student.
- Rose-Haired Girl: Bonus points for the main guy being blue-haired.
Morimura Ran - the Dark Dragon Miko (voiced by Kuwashima Houko)
- Butterfly of Death and Rebirth: Ran's Dark Dragon powers manifest as purple butterflies.
- Dark Magical Girl/Evil Counterpart: While the Mikos aren't Magical Girls per se, Ran could fit into this, being Akane's Yin counterpart.
- Mind Control Eyes: In Hachiyou Shou, when in full Dark Magical Girl mode.
The Hachiyou
Minamoto no Yorihisa - the Seiryuu of Heaven (voiced by Miki Shin'ichirou)
- Accidental Kiss: With Akane in the manga.
- Curtains Match the Window.
- Kissing Under the Influence: Sorta. In the manga, a half-conscious (due to a fever) Yorihisa manages to accidentally kiss Akane when she gets too close. Might count as an inversion of Dude, She's Like, in a Coma.
- Samurai.
Morimura Tenma - the Seiryuu of Earth (voiced by Seki Tomokazu)
- Curtains Match the Window.
- How Do I Shot Web?: In Hachiyou Shou episode 4. He later complains about this.
- Ordinary High School Student.
Inori - the Suzaku of Heaven (voiced by Takahashi Naozumi)
- Curtains Match the Window.
- Only One Name: Due to being a street boy.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: But he isn't evil.
Nagareyama Shimon - the Suzaku of Earth (voiced by Miyata Kouki)
Fujiwara no Takamichi - the Byakko of Heaven (voiced by Nakahara Shigeru)
- Eyes of Gold: In the anime adaptations; otherwise his Curtains Match the Window.
Tachibana no Tomomasa - the Byakko of Earth (voiced by Inoue Kazuhiko)
Eisen - the Genbu of Heaven (voiced by Hoshi Souichirou)
- Curtains Match the Window.
- Only One Name: Due to being from the Imperial family.
Abe no Yasuaki - the Genbu of Earth (voiced by Ishida Akira)
- Artificial Human: Yasuaki was created by Abe no Seimei and has the full set of issues that come with not being human.
- Asian Rune Chant: Several times in the TV series, complete with the associated Magical Gestures.
- Can Not Tell a Lie: This trait becomes an important point in both the manga and the TV series, albeit in very different ways.
- Catch Phrase: Mondai nai ("No problem").
- Emotional Maturity Is Physical Maturity: Subverted in the manga. He is clever enough for his apparent age, but his understanding of human emotions is on the level of a small child.
- Mismatched Eyes: One brown, one green.
- Non-Singing Voice: Amazingly, he still got an Image Song, despite being voiced by Akira Ishida, who generally avoids this kind of stuff.
- Odango Hair: Although that's one bun, not two.
- Onmyodo: Best student of Abe no Seimei.
- Paper Talisman: Uses ofuda routinely.
- The Power of Love: Implied (and pretty much stated directly in the game) to be the means for Yasuaki to become human.
- The Stoic: Although how much emotions he does have varies greatly depending on the version.
- Supernatural Angst: Over being an Artificial Human. And he claims to have no emotions...
- Younger Than They Look: Yasuaki is supposed to look 21, but is really only about 2 years old.
The Oni Clan
Akuram* (voiced by Okiayu Ryoutarou)
- The Big Bad: From the main characters' point of view, at least.
- The Chessmaster: Even uses the associated metaphors at some points.
- Guyliner: Not really (probably), but in Ajisai Yumegatari he does look like he is wearing lipstick when compared to the rest of the guys.
- Hair of Gold.
- Mask of Power: Literally. This comes up near the end of Hachiyou Shou TV and subsequently in Oborosoushi, when the Hachiyou need to do something to depower him.
- Rapunzel Hair: When his mask is off. His live-action version had been compared to Cousin It by some fans.
Iktidar (voiced by Ishii Kouji)
- Babies Ever After: With Seri in Hachiyou Shou TV.
- Dark-Skinned Blond: Would double as a White-Haired Pretty Boy if he was a little younger
- The Dragon: Explicitly identifies himself as one.
- Dual-Wielding.
- Eyepatch of Power: Implied to have lost one eye as a punishment for disobedience; generally fits into the "experienced" type of this.
Shirin* (voiced by Kawamura Maria)
- Bare Your Midriff: Well, she is a dancer...
- Something About a Rose: Plain or weaponised petals, thorn-covered vines, etc.
- Whip It Good: See above.
Sefuru (voiced by Asakawa Yuu)
- Freudian Excuse: Revealed to be a halfling abandoned by his mother (who was from Kyou).
- Hair of Gold.
Other
Fuji-hime (voiced by Ohtani Ikue; in Maihitoyo movie voiced by Koorogi Satomi)
- Curtains Match the Window.
- Rapunzel Hair: Justified by the setting.
- Wise Beyond Their Years: She is basically a mentor for the team. She is also ten years old.
Kotengu (voiced by Shimakata Junko)
- Big Eater.
- Disney Death: In Hachiyou Shou.
- Killed Off for Real: In the manga, though it at least served some point.
- Hachimaki: Sports it in one Hachiyou Shou OAV, when in Determinator mode.
- Sleep Mode Size.
- Small Annoying Creature.
- Snot Bubble: In one Hachiyou Shou OAV.
- Winged Humanoid.
- Youkai: Though a more human-like one, as the manga lampshades the fact that he lacks the long nose, one of the Tengu's traits.

- Babies Ever After: With Iktidar in Hachiyou Shou TV.
- Ill Girl: Suffers from an unspecified illness, which directly leads to her bonding with Iktidar.
- Only One Name.
Nue (voiced by Morikawa Toshiyuki)
- Hellish Pupils.
- Involuntary Shapeshifting: Poison-induced.
- Last of His Kind.
- Suicide by Cop: Suicide by his childhood friend, Yorihisa.
- Voluntary Shapeshifting: His default ability.
- White-Haired Pretty Boy: The "pretty" part is debatable, as he is slightly less human-like than Kotengu, but he is not particulary ugly either.
- Winged Humanoid: Of the "sprouting wings" type.
- Youkai.

Kasuga Nozomi - the Dragon-God/White Dragon Miko (voiced by Kawakami Tomoko)
- Action Girl: In a drastic difference from her predecessors, Nozomi learns to use a sword and participates in battles directly instead of just hanging around to purify stuff.
- Ordinary High School Student.
- Rose-Haired Girl: Again, bonus points for the main guy being blue-haired.
Kajiwara Saku - the Dark Dragon Miko (voiced by Kuwashima Houko)
- Dark Magical Girl/Evil Counterpart: Unusually subverted in that while she still posesses dark powers, she is not only on Nozomi's side, but is arguably one of the nicest characters in the game.
The Hachiyou
Arikawa Masaomi - the Seiryuu of Heaven (voiced by Miki Shin'ichirou)
- Big Fucking Sword: His Weapon of Choice.
- Ordinary High School Student.
- Plot-Relevant Age-Up: Masaomi ends up spending three extra years in the parallel world due to getting lost during the transition; therefore, when Nozomi meets him there, he is older than her, even though they were originally the same age.
Minamoto no Kurou Yoshitsune - the Seiryuu of Earth (voiced by Seki Tomokazu)
Hinoe - the Suzaku of Heaven (voiced by Takahashi Naozumi)
- Only Known by Their Nickname: It's implied that "Hinoe" isn't his actual name, but something he made up.
- Only One Name: And it might not even be his real name.
Musashibo Benkei - the Suzaku of Earth (voiced by Miyata Kouki)
- Blade on a Stick: His Weapon of Choice is a naginata, which complies with the real history.
- Hair of Gold.
- Historical Domain Character/Historical Beauty Update.
- Puss in Boots: Benkei is, in accordance with folklore, a faithful retainer to Kurou (Yoshitsune). In a departure from folklore, he is also a strategist who will do what he has to do to insure that the Genpei War ends, and he decided that Kurou will be the means. Heaven help our heroes if he changes his mind...

- Really Seven Hundred Years Old: He is technically hundreds of years old, being a god and all, but gets a form of a ten-year-old kid (and later a twenty-something-year-old Bishonen).
- Tagalong Kid: Until he grows up.
- Long-White-Haired Pretty Boy.
Taira no Tomomori (voiced by Hamada Kenji)
- Blood Knight: A fearsome opponent who lives for combat. Despite initial indications he's not Axe Crazy per se. Fighting is just his preferred method of self-expression.
