Highschool DxD/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Did Odin really abandon Rossweisse just because he got tired of her as his bodyguard, or because he felt Rossweisse deserved better but knew talking wouldn't work with her?
  • Anticlimax Boss: Even being turned into a chimera, Kiba one shots Freed like nothing.
    • Kokabiel, the Big Bad of Volume 3, could be considered this as well due to the sudden curb-stomping he received from Vali as a means to hype up the latter's power.
    • Leonardo of the Hero Faction. He is established to have control of one of the most overpowered Longinus' known to exist...and yet, he suddenly loses off-screen, and ends up randomly becoming Shalba Beelzebub's Brainwashed and Crazy henchman.
    • The Old Satan faction. Katerea is quickly Impaled with Extreme Prejudice by Azazel with only a self-sacrificed (and easily replaced) arm to show for her efforts, Creuserey gets obliterated into dust by Sirzechs a few minutes after his introduction, and Shalba is curb-stomped by Issei twice, the first as a result of Juggernaut Drive and the second resulted in Issei's first kill (even Issei himself commented on how underwhelmingly weak he was), though Shalba manages a Mutual Kill through underhanded means.
  • Complete Monster: Freed Sellzen was an exorcist who worked for the Holy Church, but did not believe in God and only joined because he enjoyed fighting monsters. When the church kicked him out, he was free to kill anyone he wanted whether they were monsters or humans, eventually becoming hired help for several of the series Big Bads. When he first appears, he murders one of Issei Hyodou's clients and tries to kill Issei himself, only to be stopped by Asia Argento. When Freed notices they met before, he tries to rape her in front of Issei, only to be stop when Rias and her peerage came, causing him to retreat, taking Asia with him. He later appears working for Raynare, but only when she offered to have sex with him, and quickly abandons her when she gets overpowered. He later appears under Kobakiel's employment, during which time he commits more atrocities, ranging from nearly beating Irina to death, to taunting Rias's knight Kiba with the fact that his swords where created from the experiments that killed Kiba's friends, while the two were fighting. In his final appearance, he was captured by the Khaos Brigade and willingly became a chimera so that he could finally kill the heroes and even ate two of their knights to make sure he didn't lose (he did lose and was finally killed). Psychotic and perverted to a fault, Freed Sellzen manages to give a new meaning to the term Light Is Not Good and become one of the heroes' most dangerous and disgusting foes.
    • Valper Galilei doesn't appear as threatening as most villains, but his actions make up for that fact. When he was still working for the church, he was in charge of the "Holy Sword Project". He was so obsessed with wielding a holy sword, that when he learned he couldn't, he turned his attention towards those who could. He kidnap dozens of children for the "Holy Sword Project", where he would perform heinous experiments on them, with fatal results for many. When the children weren't capable of wielding a holy sword, he simply has them all killed; there was only one child who survived. The church was so disgusted with Galilei, they excommunicated him, resulting in him seeking revenge against the church. He planned to do so by allying himself with the Fallen Angels, particularly with Kokabiel. When he notices that Kiba, the one boy who survived, became a knight under Rias Gremory he mocks him with the fact that all of those children who died were worthless and that he should have died with them, showing how little he cares for the children. Utterly heartless in his endeavors, it was no surprise that many would consider angels and devils having more humanity than him.
    • Diodora Astaroth, the Greater-Scope Villain of Volume 1 and the Arc Villain of Volume 6, first seems like a guy hopelessly in love with Asia, even trying to bargain with Rias to obtain her, but when Rias rejects his offers, some of his true colors shows when he kidnaps Asia and put her into a device that would drain her life force. When Rias and her peerage tries to rescue her, he reveals that he was the reason that Asia was kicked out of the church when he, a devil, pretended to be injured so she could heal him, and tried to capture her as part of his peerage. Asia was lucky to escape, as it turns out Diodora is a sex fiend with a nun fetish who goes to various churches, captures various nuns, and turns them into his sex slaves against their will. He not only reveals this with glee, but when fighting Issei he says it may be fun to rape Asia everyday whenever she calls out his name, showing he never loved Asia but just sees her as part of his nun collection. When Issei finally defeats him, Diodora still made plans for the life draining device to kill Asia should he fail to have her. Overall, while seemingly polite and charming, his actions cement him as one of the vilest villains of the series.
    • Kokabiel is a Fallen Angel who steers the plot of the third volume. He steals the pieces of Excalibur to strengthen the fallen angel faction and to tempt Michael to restart an all-out war between the three races simply so he won't be bored, as well as to prove that Fallen Angels are the superior race. He really gets what he deserves when Azazel seals him in Cocytus, the deepest part of the Underworld.

◦ Rizevim Livan Lucifer, son of Lucifer and Lilith, is a hedonistic, wicked devil who believes Devils are meant to be beings of pure evil. To that end, he convinced his son to horribly abuse his own son Vali, using his son's wife as a hostage for that purpose. Rizevim then murdered his own son and abandoned Vali. Returning upon learning of Trihexa, the beast of the apocalypse, Rizevim seeks to use it to destroy the world and rule over what's left. Attacking the vampire race and also heaven to kill as much as he can in pursuit of the Grails to free Trihexa, Rizevim also abuses and tries to murder the gentle Asia Argento. When he is finally killed, Rizevim even uses his own soul as a means to unleash Trihexa, determined to take all creation to death with him.

  • Crazy Awesome: Seriously, if he wasn't the protagonist, Ise would be dead by now with all the crazy stuff he can pull off. To wit, he has: done a rescue mission to Asia by punching out a fallen angel so hard she bursts through the wall/out the window in the anime, barged in an engagement party full of devils to take back Rias, invented Dress Break and Bilingual out of pure lust, defeats Raiser, an immortal phoenix, not with the use of his newly dragon power, but by using a holy cross and holy water which he can't even use because he's a devil, but is capable to do so because his arm is a dragon, powers up with lust and by using Rias' breasts, accidentally summons the breast god (well breast fairy but still definitely counts), is capable of breathing fire to a shadow opponent, and was able to make the past users of Boosted Gear come back to the light and make them stop relying on Juggernaut Drive with breasts. If there's one thing Rias recruited to her group, it's the fact that she recruited the craziest character of the series. No one out-crazies Issei at all in this series. And yet somehow, he's also the Only Sane Man in the group (when he's not doing his lecherous ways).
    • Rias may count to a lesser degree too. Who's crazy enough to be willing to bare her breasts open just to let Issei get a power up in public viewing!? Also renovate Issei's house from a simple house into a six-story mansion with a three-story basement and an elevator overnight!?
    • Azazel too can count as one. The craziest idea he pulled off is that to capture the Issei clones he accidentally unleashed, he suggests the idea of using fishing on them. With porn as the bait.
      • Forget Azazel himself, the entire Grigori institute counts.
  • Crowning Music of Awesome: Kakusei. That is all.
  • Die for Our Ship: Despite being a harem and everything, people seem to not like Asia as much as the rest of the characters because according to the fans, she's too clingy to Issei to share with everybody else. This lightened up (for novel readers, at least) after the introduction of Fafnir, who adds many humorous moments to Asia's character and gives her a much needed power up.
  • Ensemble Darkhorse:
    • Mil-tun has appeared in only a few scenes, and is one of the most discussed characters in the series. Take note, he's a Creepy Crossdresser.
    • Ophis is particularly well-loved by the audience too.
    • Kuroka is shown to enjoy a good degree of popularity in the fandom, and is possibly the only girl in the show itself to rival Rias and Akeno in popularity. All in all, she definitely does eclipse her younger sister Koneko in popularity. Perhaps coincidentally, her breast size is also third after Akeno and Rias among recorded characters. This is also possibly one of the reasons of her subsequent inclusion into the harem.
    • Among the Church Trio, Xenovia is far and away the most popular, mostly thanks to her extremely blunt personality.
  • Escapist Character: Issei to an absurd degree. He starts the series off as an Ordinary High School Student, who's considered an unpopular, perverted loser by pretty much everyone along with his two friends. Then after joining the Occult Research Club, he spends all of his time with the most popular people in school, wins the undying love of no less than seven absolutely gorgeous women, all of whom have no problem sharing him, and starts a relationship with the most beautiful girl in school, who also happens to be a noble. He learns that he essentially shares his body with one of the most powerful beings in existence, takes level after level in badass in record time, gains the admiration of his peers, and becomes insanely rich after his new brother-in-law makes an incredibly popular TV show based on him. The guy goes from being The Everyman to becoming the fantasy of hormonal teenage boys everywhere before he's even reached his third year of highschool.
  • Evil Is Sexy: Raynare.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Issei/Akeno seems to edge out the Official Couple Issei/Rias in terms of popularity. This is further enhanced by the fact that Akeno is the first girl in the harem that Issei goes out on a date with (barring Asia).
    • Issei/Yumi also has a sizable following.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Vali notes back in the fourth volume that the current red-white dragon rivalry was a bit unfair because Vali's the descendant of the old Lucifer and Issei's the son of a common Muggle. Vali wishes that Issei's parents were a bit special so they can have a more interesting match. Now that Great Red and Ophis are both Issei's parents by proxy by creating a body for him from Great Red's flesh and Ophis' powers, let's just say Vali's wish came true. Though seeing as Vali's a Blood Knight, he's probably pleased with the development.
  • Ho Yay: Now has it's own page!
  • I Knew It!: Some people got it correct when they thought that Great Red was going to help out both Issei and Ophis. No one however thought that Great Red has a Delinquent personality.
  • Lawful Neutral: Sakra Indra. Will help out The Alliance just so they can take care of the Chaos Brigade faction, but won't do anything else after that.
  • Moe: Lots of the girls in the series.
  • Sleeper Hit: Of the Winter 2012 Anime. Heck, no one expected that the series would even sell 10k in its first week.
  • Tear Jerker: Ise's death in volume 11 was definitely one.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks : Most fans opinion of the anime. At least, until they saw the final episode and then changed their minds.
  • True Neutral: Ophis; if it's not about defeating Great Red, then she wouldn't care about anything else. That is, before meeting Issei.
  • What an Idiot!: Most people seeing Ise being his usual self On another note the 2 dragons Red welsh(Ddraig) and Vanishing Dragon decided during the great war to fight God Satan And the leader of the fallen angels....they were quickly dismembered and the sacred gears are whats left of them stored.
