Hot-Blooded/Playing With

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Basic Trope: A character gets easily excited or riled up.

  • Straight: Bob is loud, boastful, and never gives up.
  • Exaggerated: Bob yells excessively, spouts bold righteous statements, would die before giving in, screams his attacks at the top of his lungs, and exerts himself to the breaking point.
  • Justified: Bob’s sword/Powered Armor/giant robot/etc., is powered by his fighting spirit, and he’s learned to make the most of it.
  • Inverted: Bob is hopelessly depressed and unenthusiastic.
  • Subverted: Though a member of a Proud Warrior Race, Bob is calm and collected at all times.
  • Double Subverted: … but when pushed too far, he goes into an Unstoppable Rage.
  • Parodied: Bob’s passion literally burns, setting things on fire. His friends always follow him around with a fire extinguisher to put out any fires started when he gets excited.
  • Deconstructed: Bob is regarded as a reckless hot head who disregards tactics in favor of charging into trouble. His troops suffer from bad morale and eventually lose a critical battle.
  • Reconstructed: Bob realizes that true passion derives from holding a strong guiding belief, and reaffirms what La Résistance is fighting for in the first place. By reigning in his hot blood to account for tactics and planning and letting loose when things naturally heat up, Bob becomes an inspiration rather than an embarrassment.
  • Zig Zagged: Bob is a member of a Proud Warrior Race who is calm and collected at all times, until he’s hit with a mind control spell that's supposed to put him in an Unstoppable Rage, but instead it makes him hopelessly depressed and unenthusiastic.
  • Averted: Bob doesn’t get worked up easily.
  • Enforced: The action figure manufacturer included voice-clips of Bob shouting ridiculous one-liners and the names of his various super attacks, so the writers gave him a personality to match.
  • Lampshaded: “Bob sure likes to get fired up. Does this fight mean that much to him or is he just crazy?”
  • Invoked: Bob has modeled his behavior after his favorite big-muscled heroes in comics who always speak in CAPITAL LETTERS!
  • Defied: Alice goes on a mission instead of Bob because it requires patience, stealth, and discretion, traits Bob decidedly lacks.
  • Discussed: “Listen Bob, unlike in action movies, the best warriors in real life tend to be those who can keep a cool head under pressure. Can you tone it down a little?”
  • Conversed: “Ever notice how Bob never seems hesitant or doubtful when he gets in those action scenes? In fact he pretty much flips out all the time.” “Yeah, but it sure is fun to watch. His actor must be enjoying it too.”
  • Played For Laughs: Bob gets fired up over the most mundane tasks possible.
  • Played For Drama: Bob is hiding deep-rooted psychological problems that cause him to lash out aggressively to every confrontation that comes his way, eventually culminating in a total nervous breakdown.
