Idiot Plot/Fairy Tale

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Examples of the Idiot Plot in Fairy Tales include:

  • Any Fairy Tale or Aesop which includes a warning not to do something guarantees the character will disobey. The worst part is that due to the Rule of Three, the character will often be warned three times not to do something, and then they go and do just that three times. Most people, even if they hadn't been listening the first time, would have caught on after that.
  • Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs; obviously, nobody ever told Snow White not to trust strangers, let alone take candy from them. Made worse when you read the original version where she survived two attempts on her life before the Queen gives her the apple.
  • Little Red Riding Hood; again, this kid doesn't know enough not to talk to strangers, especially talking wolves you meet in a dark woods.
  • Goldilocks; she breaks into this house in the middle of the woods, eats the residents' food, breaks the furniture, and then takes a nap there? Even if she didn't know the house belonged to bears, this kid had it coming.
