If Jesus, Then Aliens/Playing With

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Basic Trope: First Type: A character who is of religious faith will believe in anything supernatural. Second Type: A character who is an atheist/agnostic/skeptic won't believe in anything supernatural.

  • Straight:
    • First Type: Alice is religious and generally believes in supernatural phenomena like aliens and UFOs.
    • Second Type: Bob is non-religious, and refuses to believe in anything supernatural.
  • Exaggerated:
    • First Type: Alice believes in absolutely anything at face value.
    • Second Type: Bob is an uber-skeptic and refuses to believe absolutely anything without a mountain of proof.
  • Downplayed:
    • First Type: Alice is religious, and is somewhat open to the possibility of supernatural phenomena.
    • Second Type: Bob is non-religious and believes various paranormal stories, but refuses to take a side on whether it's supernatural or mundane without more proof.
  • Justified: Both types boil down to this: "If God (doesn't) exist(s), what else does(n't) exist(s)?"
  • Inverted:
    • First Type: Alice believes in a higher power, but steadfastly refuses to believe in supernatural phenomena.
    • Second Type: Bob is willing to believe in anything except the existence of a higher power.
  • Subverted:
    • First Type: When someone approaches Alice with a ghost story, she brushes them off with "that's a bunch of bunk".
    • Second Type: When someone approaches Bob with a ghost story, he listens in and offers his own story.
  • Double Subverted:
    • First Type: ...But she was in front of her church friends and was putting on airs. When she's approached in private, she actively listens and offers her own story.
    • Second Type: At the end of his ghost story, Bob laughs and says "you didn't think I was being serious, did you?"
  • Parodied: God appears and says aliens don't exist. Neither of the two believes Him: Alice doesn't believe there can't be aliens, and Bob doesn't believe it was God.
  • Zig Zagged: One character switches from Alice's position to Bob's and back in different scenes.
  • Averted: Both characters have certain things they believe and don't believe.
