• Award Snub - Many consider that The Hurt Locker winning out over Avatar in the 2010 Oscars and the BAFTAs was in a magnitude comparable to Annie Hall winning out over Star Wars back in 1977. There was a running joke among both fans and haters that voters supported The Hurt Locker and Kathryn Bigelow as an explicit means of snubbing James Cameron. Talk about a Take That.
  • Cameron himself, however, may not have seen it as such, as he had stated that he was actually rooting for Bigelow to win Best Picture.
• Broken Base - Titanic is arguably the main source of arguments, closely followed (or even outmatched) by Avatar.
• Crowning Moment of Funny - During the 1998 Academy Awards, after a clip from Titanic was shown, Billy Crystal quipped, "That clip cost $4 million." Camera cuts to James Cameron in the audience, clearly saying, "That's about right."
• Even Better Sequel - Aliens (many feel) and Terminator 2.
• Fan Hater - If you liked Titanic and/or Avatar, you might need a flame shield to say the least. Although, to be fair, it's highly unlikely anyone will give you any crap if you stick with the "safe" choices of Terminator and Aliens...
• It's Popular, Now It Sucks: He and his movies, especially Titanic, and Avatar have gotten very successful including billions in revenue and a trophy case full of awards, but nevertheless has gained quite a hatedom. Fun activity: compare the hatedom for his films starting around the middle of The Nineties to the ones before. Yeah, this trope is very much in effect.
• Magnificent Bastard: His scheme to force 20th Century Fox to give in to Sigourney Weaver's salary demands. From the IMDb:

The difficulties surrounding Sigourney Weaver's contract negotiations were such that James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd - recently married - announced that if the deal was not done by the time they got back from their honeymoon, they were out. When they returned, no progress had been made - so Cameron, determined to make the film and wary of the deadline scenario he had created, devised a scheme: he telephoned Arnold Schwarzenegger's agent for an informal chat and informed him that, thanks to his newfound standing in Hollywood following The Terminator, he had decided to make this film entirely his own by writing Ripley out. As Cameron anticipated, Schwarzenegger's agent immediately relayed the information to his colleague representing Weaver at ICM, who in turn contacted Twentieth Century Fox Head of Production Lawrence Gordon; both men, determined that under no circumstances whatsoever would Ripley be written out, wasted no time in sealing Weaver's deal.

• Never Live It Down - He was in the general vicinity of Piranha 2 while it was being filmed. There is also his off-the-cuff quoting of Titanic during his Best Director acceptance speech, "I'm the king of the world!", was seemingly taken as an actual declaration and is almost always brought up (negatively) in any article or post written about him, no matter how irrelevant.
• Sci Fi Ghetto: Defied. He's regarded as one of the greatest directors in Hollywood by moviegoers and professional critics alike (even those whose tastes lean toward the highbrow). And all but two of his films are sci-fi, although it was played straight by the Academy with Titanic being his only film to be nominated for major Oscars and actually win.
• Visual Effects of Awesome - All of his movies. Avatar is only the latest example.
