Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.
(Redirected from Japonisme)

Japonisme was originally a 19th-century European art movement that used Japanese artistic elements in non-Japanese works.

All The Tropes uses the term somewhat more generically. We don't confine the term to European works or the 19th century; instead, we use "Japonisme" to refer to any non-Japanese work that noticeably uses Japanese Visual Arts Tropes.

This is a subcategory of Cultural Blending, where the culture being blended is Japanese.

Compare with Arabist (and Arabian Nights Days), Chinoiserie, and Orientalism - and, going in the opposite direction, Occidentalism.
