Crowning Moment of Heartwarming: John showed that he was a pretty decent guy by catching his rival Ted DiBiase's golddigger of a girlfriend, Maryse, who isn't too nice herself, and setting her down, putting off revenge and winning the Money in the Bank Ladder match just to do the right thing? It's good to see a face do something nice beyond praising the audience or looking better than the other guy.

Supposedly justified/handwaved/whatever in that he's apparently can be a little cocky or get drawn into politics backstage. On the other hand, this may not be a bad thing since prominent wrestlers before him have ended up in similar situations and come out the other end even better.

Not really. While his promo work might have been better, Morrison's wrestling style is better suited for a Face, and he was massively over as one for the early part of 2011.
It may be the reason he's stalled out recently. His wrestling style is very fan-friendly and face suitable, but his overwhelming strengths on the mic and with his persona are all very heelish. It's a weird combination of Rick Rude's attitude and Ricky Steamboat's high flying.
He'd still be over if he was on TV. Most people think it has more to do with the Trish Stratus fracas that happened back in April.
