Kirby: Triple Deluxe

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.
The Day of Wrath, that day. When he will dissolve the century in flames!

Kirby: Triple Deluxe is a 2014 platform video game in the Kirby series that was developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS. It is the thirteenth platformer, and tenth mainline installment in the series. It received praise for its level design, soundtrack, and graphics, but was criticised for its lack of difficulty.

On a bright and sunny day in Dream Land, Kirby spent his day eating, sleeping, fishing, and riding his Warp Star home. That night, while Kirby was sleeping, a giant beanstalk called the Dreamstalk began to grow under Dream Land and carried Kirby's house and Castle Dedede into the sky. When Kirby wakes up the next morning, he finds himself in a new land called Floralia, located high in the skies above Dream Land. Kirby makes his way to Dedede's Castle and finds that the culprit behind the Dreamstalk is a six-armed, spider-like being named Taranza, who has defeated the Waddle Dee guards and captured King Dedede. Now it's up to Kirby to save the King...

In terms of gameplay, Kirby is a 2.5D platformer with the usual gimmick of Kirby being able to suck enemies and absorb the abilities of a few. It allows the player to interact and move through different planes, giving the game some three-dimension properties. It also introduces Hypernova, a power-up which drastically enhances power and reach of Kirby's signature suck move.

Tropes used in Kirby: Triple Deluxe include:
  • Advancing Wall of Doom: Stage 5-3 contains several of walls of grain terrain with spikes on the surface. And they get increasingly harder to escape thanks to smaller or narrower spaces and/or more frequent enemies.
  • Art Attacker: Paintra, who is herself a living painting, makes her painting of weapons turn into reality or uses the paint of her brush to try to kill Kirby.
  • Art Initiates Life: Taranza animates Paintra out of a painting to attack Kirby at the end of World 2.
  • Big Bad: Queen Sectonia, Taranza's boss, is the one who ordered Dedede's kidnapping and oppressed the People of the Sky, leading to them sending the Dreamstalk to Dream Land to summon an hero to save them.
  • Black Hole Belly: As if his classic inhale wasn't enough, Kirby can enhance his inhale in this game with the Hypernova ability by finding a Miracle Fruit.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: King Dedede, as Masked Dedede.
  • Dude in Distress: King Dedede is this for most of the game.
  • Excuse Plot: Subverted. The game seems to have little to no plot until the very last stage, where the intricacies of it are finally revealed, and Taranza's reasons are revealed to be more than just "kidnap the nearest thing Dream Land have to an authority": he knew that the Dreamstalk had been sent down to Dream Land in order to summon a hero to combat the forces of Queen Sectonia, and he mistook Dedede for it, hoping to deal a massive blow to Dream Land's defenses.
  • Frickin' Laser Beams: The machines on stage 2-2 often block Kirby's paths with lasers that damage the player character if touched.
  • Interface Screw: Paintra paints the screen itself to prevent the player of knowing where she or Kirby is.
  • Living Statue: The boss of World 4, Coily Rattler, is a metal statue of a snake given life by Taranza.
  • The Man Behind the Man: Taranza is only the secondary antagonist and he's only following the orders of Queen Sectonia, "the real mastermind behind the curtain". Also, it's Dark Meta Knight who is implicitly responsible for her corruption.
  • Meaningful Name: Mr. Frosty is An Ice Person.
  • Mistaken for Badass: Downplayed, since King Dedede is no weakling, but Taranza thought he was the actual badass hero and was surprised when Kirby defeated him.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Taranza, the creature which kidnaps Dedede at the beginning of the game. Despite not having arms.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: The Mowlee Brothers uses a decoy which is quite obviously a cardboard cutout of themselves in 1-1. The player would only be fooled if they attack too fast.
  • Sizeshifter: Blocky DX enlarges himself and then falls on himself in an effort to crush Kirby.
  • Spikes of Doom: Used in Stage 1-4 and others. To circumvent them, Kirby has to either have power-ups that allow him to air dash (like Fire) or use the ships on rails available on the level.
  • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: Subverted with Gigant Edge as its movement in the background and slow speed make the ttack easy to avoid.
  • True Final Boss: Soul of Sectonia is the harder version of Flowered Sectonia (Queen Sectonia's second form). She also has a second phase.
  • Weakened by the Light: In Level 4-3, there are 3 false door painting that burn away just from exposure to the sun.
