Kyonyuu Fantasy Gaiden/Nightmare Fuel

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

The first game and anime adaptation had maybe one or two moments of this, but Gaiden takes it Up To Eleven at some parts.

  • For starters, there's a wraith that gets unleashed on the people of Boan. Said wraith causes people to succumb to despair and commit suicide.
    • Considering this game involves fully voiced characters aside from Lute himself... Let that sink in when you hear the characters die.
  • There's also incidents with familiars summoned to pose as a succubus and Shamsiel herself. During said incidents, they kill a considerable number of people and the blame gets put on Shamsiel.
    • The damage these incidents do to Shamsiel's reputation comes very VERY close to breaking her. At one point she suggests that perhaps she and Lute divorce and she would go live in Boan quietly, and as long as Lute would visit her occasionally that would be enough for her. A reminder this is coming from SHAMSIEL herself! Somebody give her a hug dammit! Good news is, Lute never doubts her for a second and tells her to stay by his side no matter what anyone else said. Also, they manage to destroy the imposters and clear Shamsiel's name later on so it all works out.
  • Saint Reaper. Badass? Sure, but he's VERY scary to the people of the story. He makes a room of berserk ghouls crap their pants. And rightly so. He's basically the incarnation of death/judgement. He can devour souls and transport them to the underworld/afterlife. In fact, every time he appears he does just that: He consumes the berserk ghouls' souls (including the impostor Shamsiel). He takes the soul of Cardinal Nigolinov on the grounds that it was deemed wicked. In fact, the very first time we see him, a young Cardinal had attempted to open the box as a test for his own worth as a follower of God, but Reaper deemed him as impure and killed him too!
  • How does a succubus kill someone? They "eat them up", and leave the victim a dried out, shriveled, pile of basically just skin and bones. Shamsiel, the "Fake Succubus", and the "Fake Shamsiel" each kill people over the course of this story. The real Shamsiel, mostly just threatens a few people with it and only actually kills a couple of people who were trying to harm Lute. The fake Succubus and fake Shamsiel however, they kill many of the soldiers, especially in Bustenhalter, in order to frame and discredit the real Shamsiel. Another reason this is scary is that it works, and almost gets the real Shamsiel killed, had it not been for Lute managing to calm everyone down.
