Las Lindas/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Pretty much everyone, but Miles gets a special mention. His creator and fans (both hardcore and casual) take a different interpretation of him; being a Jerkass Woobie who constantly receives Disproportionate Retribution; while the other side thinks he's a self-absorbed Jerkass who's always stealing the spotlight.
    • Rachael also gets a disturbing amount of this, usually on the forum, and usually from people who hate her and call her a selfish, heartless whore who deserves crippling injuries, life-threatening illnesses- or even death- and people who desperately want her shoehorned into a dysfunctional relationship with Miles; the latter group insists that she's actually a weak-willed Tsundere who loves Jerk Asses and only pretends to love guys like Minos.
  • Broken Base: Mostly aligned along specific character lines. The Taffy/Miles incident mentioned below is one, the Rachael/Mora rivalry is another, and Miles is practically one all by himself. It depends heavily in the Alternate Character Interpretation and mostly, that both parts of the Hatedom and Fandom tend to be equally parts Fan Dumb most of the time.
  • Creator's Pet: Miles, as has been noted several times already.
    • The "Learning Curves" bonus comic was apparently supposed to show that Miles actually had some bad experiences and was once a loving genuine Nice Guy in a relationship who then lost the girl and became bitter. Unfortunately, since the bad experiences weren't actually that bad, and he pretty much neglected the girl and took her for granted as a friend with benefits right from the start, for most it just served to reinforce the perception that all he had was Wangst and that he was still dodging responsibility for his own screwups.
    • This trope is beginning to happen in the main comic as well. SK keeps trying to find new ways to put Miles in the spotlight and make him seem a lot nicer and more likeable than he actually is, when all he's doing is confirming the idea that Miles is nothing more than a lecherous, arrogant, somewhat delusional Jerkass, and actually causing more readers to dislike or hate Miles.
  • Critical Backlash\Hype Backlash: Miles' fans argue that most of his ostensible Jerkass moments just aren't that Jerkish; however, most of his Pet the Dog moments likewise fall flat.
  • Crowning Moment of Funny: Comic 267. Nothing like a bit of lighthearted Comedic Sociopathy to lighten the mood left by a rather cerebusy arc.
  • Crowning Moment of Heartwarming: Many, depending on who you ask.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Miles has one of the biggest character fanbases in the comic despite his many Jerkass and flatout Kick the Dog moments.
    • On the forums, at least. Outside the forums, he's quite unpopular.
  • Ensemble Darkhorse: Randal is an interesting example. While other characters generate divisiveness and in-fighting over who likes them, whether their actions were correct or understandable, and their interactions with other characters, Randal just... skates on by. About as negative as the reaction to anything he ever does gets is "neutral".
    • Taffy, by a long shot, considering that she's popular enough to win practically every positive poll on the official website regardless of the category, including the poll about which character would you like to see have their own spin off series from the main cast.
    • Tila Sunrise, too.
  • Evil Is Sexy: Alejandra counts for this to a certain degree. Din and Jin have had traits of this, especially when they transform to evade Sarah and Digit's capture for almost killing Digit.
    • Highlighted in the Dungeons And Dames side-comic, where the explicitly evil "ice queen" wears an even more fanservicey version of Alejandra's festival dress.
  • Fan Nickname: Chalosan, SoulKat, and ID_Fox are sometimes referred to as either "the Katbox Krew" or "the Big Three".
  • Funny Aneurysm Moment: When Chalo published Comic 265, this text was included as part of the update: "And in that fateful day, while in the middle of a lusty dream (I guess), the life of the lil rascal came to a end. Will someone remember him, after he's gone, I wonder? Only time will tell." Within the next week, Chalo's brother died.
    • It was also coincidentally posted shortly after Yoshito Usui was found dead, having fallen off a cliff on September 11th, 2009.
    • During the comic's early days, a number of gags were centered around the farm's well. The same well was recently the center of a rather heartrending scene.
  • Gannon Banned: Soul Kat has a big Berserk Button related to this trope due to so many people screwing up Davin Preacher's name, instead calling him Devin.
  • Ho Yay Shipping: The forums turned Randal's apparent metrosexuality into a running gag where he's actually gay...and the favorite fan pairing for him was with Miles. It got to the point where an April Fools strip was produced that depicted the two naked together in bed.
  • Internet Backdraft: It's generally not a good idea to bring up the Miles/Taffy fight from the Harvest Festival arc, as it will cause some readers to say "Miles needs to die! Horribly!" and others to reply with "The stuckup cocktease prude whore deserved it. Bitch." The forum even tries to dodge this by cutting off such discussions before the flames can heat back up.
    • Hell, whenever any character makes a controversial action, you can expect the fanbase to explode into debates on whether or not the action was "right" or "justified". Especially when the action in question involves Miles, Minos, Rachael or Mora.
    • Also, anything involving SoulKat Bowdlerizing content - the Bust Chart images, for example, started off as the LL girls in lingerie/underwear, but slowly moved into having them in less revealing outfits (or even their regular comic outfits). When tribal girl Ailana wasn't drawn topless despite having been topless in two consecutive pages of the bonus comic she appeared in, fans both on the forums and off complained about the Bowdlerization of the Bust Chart, and many believe SoulKat is the one responsible for this.
    • More recently, the "Island Story" arc received heavy criticism, mostly because the whole thing seemed rushed in several areas and Din and Jin getting an apparent Karma Houdini.
  • Les Yay:
    • Played with in the Fan Service arc "Breasts Are the Best" between Taffy Ria and Rachael.
    • Joked about in the main comic here
    • Also, Alejandra and Tootsie's relationship; unlike the above example, this one is actually canon, though it's also played with in "Breasts Are the Best".
  • Magnificent Bastard: Ambar will ALWAYS win. And she will ALWAYS do it with a condescending smile on her face.
  • Marty Stu: Minos is often seen as one by fans. Miles too, though he's closer to a Creator's Pet.
  • Memetic Mutation: Messiah's "Scandalous!", arguably.
    • And Randal's "Fabulous!", inarguably.
  • Memetic Sex God: This apparently applies to most of the females in the comic, but Mora, Alejandra, Taffy and Rachael stand out the most in this area.
  • Narm: Any comic page that tries to have a serious moment while shoving in as much fanservice per panel as humanly possible.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Even those who dislike Rachael (grudgingly) admitted that her risking her life to save Digit was a good move.
  • Strangled by the Red String: Type 2 example with Rachael and Miles. SoulKat has apparently decided out of the blue that Miles and Rachael need to be shoved together as soon as possible, with little other than ID holding him back from doing it within a few comics. The pages of Miles showing Rachael his junked plane were the toned down version--the original, according to ID, was filled with juvenile, brick-to-the-face flirting from both characters. As Rachael has previously given every indication of absolutely despising guys like Miles, this trope is in full effect as she's steadily Flanderized into a stereotypical Tsundere to facilitate their pairing.
    • Randal and Taffy's relationship applies as well, being another type 2 example. They barely know each other, rarely interacted with each other at all before recently, and still end up deeply in love and smooching after one date in a scene so overblown and rushed that even Disney would laugh at it. Additionally, the entire thing's ridiculous pacing makes it seem like it was done solely to get people to stop questioning Randal's sexuality RIGHT NOW, and it doesn't help that SoulKat has more than once expressed disgust and hate for a number of fan-favourite homosexual pairings and those who like them.
  • Squick: What's more disturbing? Digit actually being drawn for the bust chart, or the fact that so many people wanted to see her on it so badly?
  • Take That, Scrappy!: Tiare says what we're all thinking. You think Soulkat reads this page?
    • Actually, he did find out about this page a while back. He was not happy.
      • And then someone did a Take That, Scrappy to him on the boards, quickly turning into a Crowning Moment of Awesome when Soulkat owned up to that poster's well-thought out, laser-guided critique and ID remarked that he was "impressed."
  • Tear Jerker: Last panel (warning: spoilers) of this page. Full stop.
  • The Scrappy: Though opinions vary on Digit, she fits the technical specs down to a T. Sarah wanders towards this territory occasionally, and Miles is probably this whenever he's not being a Creator's Pet or just an out-and-out Author Avatar.
    • Rachael receives a disproportionate amount of hatred on the forum. Amusingly, she's one of the more popular characters outside the forum.
  • What an Idiot!: Mora could've handled the Love Triangle situation better...
    • Neither Rachael nor Minos handled it any better.
  • What Do You Mean It's Not for Kids?: The bright colors and animal characters may make it seem like its age appropriate for everyone, that is until you get to the fifth page.... (Warning NSFW)
  • The Woobie: Taffy, in most parts of the comic combined with aspects of her childhood is this in spades.
