This is a list of some of the characters from the 2011 GONZO series Last Exile: Fam, The Silver Wing.

Expect this page to grow as the series progresses.

Main Characters

Fam Fan Fan

Voiced by: Aki Toyosaki (Japanese)

15-year-old Fam is a Sky Pirate from Kartoffel, and despite her relatively young age is one of their best vespa vanship pilots. Cheerful and excitable, Fam takes pride in always being the first one to cast the harpoon on the Sky Pirates' usual skyship hunts. She hopes to one day re-institute the annual Grand Race, long discontinued due to the war between the Ades Federation and its neighbors. Of course, if and when that happens, she wants to also participate in it and win.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • The Ace
  • Boring Conveniently-Lucky Heroine: For most of the first half of the series things mostly seem to go Fam's way (particulary in the Skyship Hunt), even when all logic suggest that they shouldn't.
  • Brutal Honesty: Fam seems to be utterly incapable of lying and is completely devoid of tact. Her jibes at Atamora aside, in one instance we see her, over the span of a few minutes, pretty much call the Turanian refugees in Ades hypocrites, comment on the general shabbiness of the Ades palace and overreact to Sara Augusta being a little girl.
  • Generation Xerox: Is a spitting image of her mother Raha.
  • Green Eyes: Notable in that it's shared by only one other living character in-series, General Sadri of the Ades Federation.
  • The Hero: Arguable. See Supporting Protagonist entry below.
  • Heterosexual Life Partners: With Giselle.
  • Idiot Hero: Let's be honest, Fam isn't really all that bright.
  • The Kirk
  • Memento MacGuffin: Fam's medal, embossed with what looks like the symbol of the Guild.
    • In the final episode, she receives Sadri's locket.
  • Parental Abandonment: Apparently. She was the sole survivor of a crashed vanship discovered by people from Kartoffel.
  • Plucky Girl: Nothing seems to keep Fam down for long. YMMV of course, but some viewers dislike her for this, as her constant optimism seems unrealistic and out of place given the seriousness of the conflict the setting is engulfed in.
  • Sky Pirate: Obviously.
  • Sleepwalking: One of Fam's bad habits. She has to have her leg tied down to ensure she doesn't fall out of either a vanship or her room, and there's an extra bed under the ladder to her room to cushion the impact.
  • Supporting Protagonist: While Fam is the titular character, it can be interpreted that Silver Wing is really Milia's story, told from Fam's perspective.
  • Static Character: For nearly the entirety of the series' run, Fam stays idealistic and hopelessly naive. Nineteen episodes pass (and two episodes before the end of the series at that) before she finally realizes that she's been insensitive to the feelings and wishes of the people around her and, what's more, was thoughtlessly pushing her own dreams unto other people.


Giselle Collette Vingt

Voiced by: Aoi Yuki (Japanese)

Fam's childhood friend, Giselle is also her co-pilot and navigator. Calm and soft-spoken, Giselle often finds herself embarrassed by Fam's antics, particularly during skyship hunts. The eldest of four children, Giselle is a bit of a mechanical nut, and keeps a personal diary filled with technical diagrams and designs of most of the skyships that ply the skies.

Princess Milia il Velch Cutrettola Turan

Voiced by: Ai Kayano (Japanese)

The second daughter of the ruler of the kingdom of Turan, Princess Milia is very headstrong and opinionated. The destruction of her country changed all of that though, and now Milia is trying the best she can to adapt to her current situation. For the moment she is staying with Fam at Giselle's family home at Kartoffel and -- more recently -- the Silvius, though she hopes to someday return to rebuild her homeland.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Character Development: Milia has come a long way from the spoiled and bratty princess she was at the start of the series. Contrasts neatly with Fam, who's remained mostly the same since then.
  • The Captain: Is given temporary command of the Silvius, as Tatiana and Alister sortie in their vanship again during the climax.
  • Hair Decorations
  • The Heroine: Although it is Fam with her name in the title, Silver Wing is mostly about Milia. Fam is just along for the ride (for now).
  • Everything's Better with Princesses
  • Expository Hairstyle Change
  • Kingdom In Exile: Sets up the temporary Kingdom of Turan... by taking over several rooms in the Silvius.
    • She demanded the canteen and three rooms - but she only got a table (marked off with tape and adorned with the Turan flag), and possibly whatever room(s) they sleep in.
  • Rebel Leader: With the death of Vasant she virtually becomes this, and takes command of the Alliance forces for the final showdown with Luscinia. Even more senior generals like Ōrang follow her lead.
  • Rousing Speech: Gives a very good one before the Alliance forces confront Luscinia's Grand Exile and his allies.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something : Connected to the Kingdom In Exile entry above, Milia has spent most of the series gathering support to strike against Luscinia, and at one point takes command of the Turanian segment of the Alliance forces during the battle of Boreas in Sadri's old flagship. She's also read up on the functions of the Silvius enough that she is given temporary command of the ship for the final battle against the Grand Exile.
  • Slightly-Pointy Ears: Not really commented on in-series, but they make her stand out compared to Fam and Giselle. Not surprising as, being born of a family of Exile Keys, this means she is of Guild descent.
  • Royal Brat: In the beginning.
  • Theme Naming: Cutrettola means Wagtail in Italian.

The Ades Federation

Premier Luscinia Hāfez

Voiced by: Kazuyuki Okitsu / Chiwa Saito (young) (Japanese)

The premier of the Ades Federation, and the prosecutor of its current aggressive policies against its neighbors. Although Luscinia seems to have an admirable goal behind the conflict his homeland is instigating -- to take back the lands lost to the Exile returnees for their original owners -- one can't help but wonder if there are other, more personal reasons behind this. Quite surprisingly, he does not.

Augusta Sārā

Voiced by: Kanae Ito (Japanese)

The 10-year-old Empress of the Ades Federation, Sara is surprisingly well-informed about the conflict her generals are prosecuting in her name. Kind and compassionate, she seems to understand the spirit behind the war if not the grim specifics of it; though you wonder how much she would support the war if she knew everything Luscinia was doing in her name. Despite this she is still a little girl, and as such enjoys simple pleasures like having shoulder rides (care of General Kayvān).

  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Luscinia may be her Prime Minister and regent, but she's still the monarch.
  • Break the Cutie: Poor Sārā is not taking the fact that her generals, each of whom she is fond of on some level, are forced to fight against each other.
    • In general, she suffers from this a lot.
  • Hair Decorations
  • Facial Markings
  • Fan Nickname: Quite unflattering (and unfair) "Loli Hitler", given that Ades is often interpreted just as a bunch of Sky Nazis. Though it was mostly forgotten in the second half of the series.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her father's whereabouts are yet to be specified. Her mother was assassinated.
  • Pointy Ears: Much like many people in Ades, though in Sārā's case it might be a clue who her father is. It turns out that, like Liliana and Alvis, she has Guild blood in her, and is in fact the Key to the Grand Exile.


General Kayvān

Voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi (Japanese)

The commander of Ades' 2nd Fleet, General Kayvan is a big bear of a man whose gentleness with children, particularly his monarch Augusta Sara, belies his gruff exterior. While seemingly not that imaginative a commander, at least when compared with younger peers Ōrang or Sorūsh, he makes up for it through determination and bravery.

General Ōrang

Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama (Japanese)

Commander of the 3rd Fleet of the Ades Federation, Ōrang is calm and methodical, and seems to have a plan or strategy ready for each encounter. He and Sorūsh are old friends, having known each other since their days in the Academy.

General Sorūsh

Voiced by: Yuuichi Nakamura (Japanese)

Suave and handsome, General Sorūsh is the commander of the Ades Federation's 4th Fleet, and known as much for his womanizing as for the way he quickly deploys the ships under his command. He is an old friend of General Ōrang, though his lecherous antics often gets on his more straight-laced friend's nerves.

  • Bishonen
  • The Casanova: An unapologetic womanizer, much to Ōrang's dismay. Episode 11 shows that he was like this even as a cadet.
  • Heterosexual Life Partner: To Ōrang.
  • Heel Face Turn: After his surprise return.
  • Honor Before Reason: He continues on with his attack on Vasant's flagship, despite knowing that Augusta Sārā was on it and it would likely alienate his closest ally and best friend Ōrang.]
  • Keep the Reward: In the finale, he was in line for the Premier position, but turns it down and goes off somewhere else. The position is given to Ōrang instead.
  • Law of Chromatic Superiority: Sorūsh's red-themed fleet of ships seems to be faster than all the other ships that the Ades Federation has under its disposal. Indeed his flagship the Serapati is called the fastest warship of its airborne navy.
  • The Red Baron: Godspeed Sorūsh.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Seemingly the Red Oni to Ōrang's Blue, but the latter points out that Sorūsh is much more logical and, as later events show, brutally pragmatic than he is.

General Sadri

Voiced by: Takaya Hashi (Japanese)

The commander of the Ades Federation's 1st Fleet, General Sadri has been kept busy lately trying to track down and capture, if possible, the elusive ghost ship Silvius. It was through his quiet support that Luscinia was able to rise to his current place of power, of which the Premier is thankful to the elder general for.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Badass Grandpa: He's definitely the oldest of the Ades generals, and seems to be more than a fine strategist, seeing as how he was able to corner the Sylvius (and it may not be the first time).
  • Cool Old Guy
  • Going Down with the Ship: Elects to stay in the wreck of the Anshar, while letting his crew escape.
  • Green Eyes: And having them has a surprising implication as well.
  • Know When to Fold'Em
  • The Men First: He's entirely willing to lose a modern battleship but save its crew. The fact that these men are skilled and well trained and are going to save their experience for the Federation is a welcome addition.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: Fully supports Luscinia in his plan, as he believes it's the best way for the world to gain peace.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure
  • The Strategist: Showcased wonderfully in the attack on Boreas where he sows confusion in the Alliance's ranks, which actually causes the Glacies contingent to attack their allies, the Ades 3rd Fleet.
  • We Have Reserves: Totally and utterly averted. He cares and values his men, and much prefer them over the materiel. Even if it was altruistic(as mentioned, saving the crew saves the trouble of training a new one), but still better than the alternative.
  • You Remind Me of X: Fam reminds Sadri of his daughter Raha. Not surprising, since Fam is Raha's daughter.


General Vasant

Voiced by: Fumiko Orikasa (Japanese)

Ostensibly the commander of Ades 5th Fleet, General Vasant rarely goes out on campaigns these days, and prefers to stay by the side of the young ruler of the Federation. She ostensibly serves as Augusta Sara's adviser, but it would be more accurate to call her the Empress' guardian. Vasant herself isn't an Ades native, and instead hails from Keios, a troublesome territory that was annexed sometime during the previous Augusta's reign.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • A Mother to Her Men: ... Which is why she wasn't happy when her countrymen are sent to spearhead the attack on Glacies.
  • Boobs of Steel: Her scarf really makes her large bust quite noticeable. And of course, being an exceptional general, she definitely qualifies as one.
  • Enemy Mine: She allies with some of Ades old enemies-turned-annexed territories and other aggrieved parties against Luscinia.
  • Heel Face Turn: The slaughter of her countrymen in the assault on Glacies does NOT sit well with Vasant, enough that it causes her to rebel against Luscinia.
  • Killed Off for Real: Luscinia finally (and personally) disposes of her when she tries to stop him from taking Augusta Sārā.
  • Parental Substitute: She serves as Augusta's mother figure, something she swore to do after Farahnāz was assassinated.
  • Prim and Proper Bun
  • Purple Eyes: A dominant trait of the people of her country, apparently.
  • The Red Baron: The Amethyst of Keios.
  • The Smurfette Principle: The only named Ades general who's female.
  • Undying Loyalty: To the ideals of the previous Empress Augusta. Though she was a firm believer in unification even as a cadet, despite being part of the annexed country of Keios, this only strengthened when Augusta Farahnāz was killed.

Alauda

Voiced by: Masaya Matsukaze (Japanese)

The head of Ades' intelligence bureau, Alauda reports directly (and only) to the Premier Luscinia. Aside from information gathering, he seems to oversee some of the darker aspects of the Federation's governance, such as disposing of enemies of the state and other undesirables.

Augusta Farahnāz

Voiced by: Mabuki Andou (Japanese)

Ades' previous empress, a kind and compassionate, universally respected[1] woman with a goal of uniting the world and bringing it to peace. Tended to inspire Undying Loyalty in her friends and subordinates.

  • The Atoner: She regretted the lives that were lost during the wars before the peace treaty and the racism that came between the Earth Natives and the Exiles which is why she is promoting peace and understanding so that everyone including the children like her daughter Sārā could grow in a world of peace.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Covered Princess Liliana when an assassin tried to kill Liliana for getting in his way of killing Farahnāz herself.
  • The High Queen
  • Irony: She started the peace treaty between the various nations in order to stop the killings and end the Earth Natives discrimination against the Exiles, yet it was the Exiles who she wanted to protect that killed her. Also, her desire for world peace has been interpreted after her death as justifying terrible wars.
    • Apparently is was her death specifically that convinced Luscinia in impossibility of integrating Exiles and Natives peacefully.
  • A Mother to Her Men: Especially to her bodyguards Luscinia and Alauda, whom she treated like her sons.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure

The United Kingdom of Anatoray-Disith

Tatiana Wisla

Voiced by: Eri Kitamura (Japanese)

Captain of the infamous ghost ship, Tatiana is outwardly cool and all-business. She is also a skilled vanship pilot, a fact that she displays to full effect when a certain young and cheeky Sky Pirate thinks that her ship is easy pickings.

Alister Agrew

Voiced by: Natsuko Kuwatani (Japanese)

Tatiana's Executive Officer, Alister is much more expressive (and even-handed) than her captain. She takes over command of the Silvius whenever Tatiana feels the need to personally pilot her vanship during missions. She's been Tatiana's best friend for a long time and, being much more sly and scheming as it would look from the outside, isn't above manipulating her much more direct and straitlaced mate.

Vincent Alzey

Voiced by: Hozumi Gôda (Japanese)

The supreme commander of the armed forces of the United Kingdom of Anatoray-Disith, Vincent is also the captain of the warship Urbanus. With the bulk of Anatoray and Disith's forces still off-planet, Vincent has been trying his best to cultivate alliances against a future confrontation with the Ades Federation. So far he hasn't had much success with isolationist Glacies, but the crisis in Turan has opened up opportunities for the wily leader.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • The Captain: And his warship the Urbanus makes its return with him.
  • The Cavalry: Arrives with the the Anatoray half of Prester's fleet just in time for the push against the Grand Exile.
  • Drink Order: Vincent sure loves his 'battleship coffee', and most of the time is shown with a cup of it either in hand or within easy reach.
  • Know When to Fold'Em: Took the hard decision to leave the Silvius to fend for itself to keep Alvis away from one more Guild's abduction attempt.
  • Officer and a Gentleman: Comes with being one of the Anatoray's great nobles.

Alvis Hamilton

Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa (Japanese)

The Key to Anatoray-Disith's Exile, Alvis is obviously an important person to the people of Anatoray-Disith, as well as the long-term goals of its leaders, particularly in the ongoing conflict with Ades. She is an acquaintance of Dio, whom she had some adventures with in the past.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • The Empath: Al has a very specialized version of the ability: she can sense the activation (or destruction) of other Exiles, as well as their Keys. The latter facet of her ability becomes important in the climax as it helps Fam and Giselle locate Sara within the bowels of the Grand Exile. This ability was hinted at during the first series through her dreams, but only became prominent in the Silver Wing due to the presence of all the other Exiles.
  • Hair Decorations: Look more like rocket engines instead of the jet turbine-like pins she wore in Last Exile.
  • Pointy Ears: More prominent now than her previous appearance in Last Exile.
  • The Other Darrin: Kana Hanazawa takes over for Anna Shiraki this time around.
  • The President's Daughter: Being an Exile Key sure makes her a popular target for abduction.

Claus Valca

Voiced by: Mayumi Asano (Japanese)

An ex-courier and talented vanship pilot, Claus was a hero of the conflict that raged in his homeworld of Prester. He and Dio have some history together, and with his closest friend Lavie was Alvis' caretaker. He is currently recovering from injuries received from an unknown source in New Anatoray, under Lavie's supervision.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • All There in the Manual: Claus' adventures after the previous series are only now being described in the Travelers from the Hourglass manga.
  • Continuity Nod: The whole of episode 15.5 is a reminder that, yes, Claus was the main character of the previous Last Exile.
  • Demoted to Extra: Like his friend Lavie, Claus only appears in a cameo at the end of one of the recap episodes and in the series' finale.

Lavie Head

Voiced by: Chiwa Saito (Japanese)

Also one of the many heroes of the war that engulfed her native colony-world of Prester, Lavie is one of Alvis closest friends and, prior to the escalating conflict with the Ades Federation, her caretaker. She is currently in New Anatoray, helping Claus recover from his injuries.

  • All in The Manual: Lavie's adventures prior to Fam, The Silver Wing are only now being revealed through the Travelers from the Hourglass manga.
  • Bob Haircut: Somewhat different in shape from the previous season. Whether that qualifies as a Significant Haircut is yet unknown.
  • Continuity Nod: Along with Claus and Alvis, Lavie was one of the main characters of the previous Last Exile.
  • Demoted to Extra: For now, she's reduced to a cameo at the end of one of the recap episodes and the series itself.

Empress Sophia Forrester

Voiced by: Wakana Yamazaki (Japanese)

The sovereign of the Anatoray segment of the United Kingdom of Anatoray-Disith, Sophia is also the captain of the warship Silvana. She arrives with her country's fleet just in time for the final push against Luscinia and his loyalists.

Glacies

Dian

Voiced by: Yukana (Japanese)

Dian is the leader of the Adamas Squadron, one of the many rocket vanship squads tasked with defending the Glacies border from interlopers. She serves in dual role of pilot and 'Winged Priestess/Witches', an embodiment of the "Goddess" the people of Glacies worship. First initially encountered during the Silvius' battle with the Ades Federation's 1st Fleet, Dian later saves Fam and her friends from their Ades pursuers, and helps gather the parts they need to repair their damaged vespa.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Ace Pilot
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Realizes her desire for revenge for her people destroyed the peace Sara had worked so hard for and killing Liliana, the woman who destroyed her country, made her sick and sad.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Just as peace is about to be made, she tries to kill Luscinia; instead, she kills Liliana.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Insists on attacking anyone involved in the fall of Glacies, whether they're already nominally allies (Ōrang and his 3rd Fleet) or just preventing her from getting her revenge (Fam).
  • Spell My Name with an "S": Is it Dian/Dyan/Dion?
  • Sugar and Ice Personality: Despite the obvious language barrier and her stoic demeanour, Dian is actually very nice, as Fam and her friends find out.
  • The Remnant: Dian, Viola, and at least eighteen other pairs are all that's left of Glacies' Winged Priestesses.
  • The Stoic: She's not really expressive while in her cockpit, or off-duty for that matter.
  • When She Smiles
  • White-Haired Pretty Girl

Viola

Voiced by: Jenya [Eugenia Davidyuk] (Japanese)

Viola is Dian's Navi, with all the responsibilities that entails.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Fake Russian: Averted. Jenya, her voice actor, is a native Russian who is also the anime's Russian Language consultant.
  • Number Two: Viola seems to take over Dian's duties as flight leader when the latter is busy.

Primula

Voiced by: Sayuri Hara (Japanese)

Dian's wingwoman. Goes by the Call sign "03".

Magnolia

Voiced by: Chiaki Omigawa(Japanese)

Primula's Navi. Magnolia is the only Winged Priestess shown so far that speaks anything other than her native Glacian. This makes her a spokeswoman of sorts for her contingent whenever they need to talk to people who don't understand their language.

Supporting Characters

Princess Liliana il Grazioso Merlo Turan

Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro (Japanese)

The crown princess of the Kingdom of Turan, Liliana is regal, mature, and level-headed despite the crisis facing her country, traits that her younger sister Millia admires and seeks to emulate. Having encountered Luscinia in her youth, she is shocked at how someone who used to be so kind would want to destroy her homeland.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • A Mother To Her Men: One of the reasons why the men of the Turan Armed Forces are loyal to her. See Undying Loyalty.
  • Damsel in Distress: From the end of episode 2 until episode 10.
  • Everything's Better with Princesses
  • Face Heel Turn: After announcing her ascendance to the throne of Turan, she also immediately mentions that Turan and the Ades Federation are now allies. Milia obviously does not take this well.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Just seconds before peace could be made, she takes the bullet from Dian for Luscinia.
    • Ironic Echo: 10 years ago, she was saved by Augusta Farahnāz, who got assassinated. 10 years later, she saves Luscinia. But in the process, she gets (inadvertently) assassinated by Dian.
    • To further the irony, it turns out that Luscinia didn't need her protection, as the following episode shows that he can dodge bullets just fine.
  • Slightly-Pointy Ears: Much like her sister Milia. Not surprising, as being an Exile key implies Guild descent, like Alvis from the previous series.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Initially. You wonder how reasonable you could call her after that Face Heel Turn.
  • Red Baron: The Witch of Turan.
  • Taking the Bullet
  • Tragic Villain: She willingly became the "Witch of Turan" so that her sister and the people of Turan, both Natives and Exiles, could have a future in a new world of peace.
  • Theme Naming: Merlo means Blackbird in Italian.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Regal and mature, she treats the Sky Pirates as timely allies instead of enemies.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: She joins Luscinia and his plans after realizing that even though he is bent on conquering the world and killed her father, killing him will only makes things worse since his death will lead to a massive civil war in Ades over his position and the Exile nations will use that war to their advantage to grab power. As a result, she choose the Lesser of Two Evils believing it's the only way to save the world even if it means people calling her a witch.


Dio Eraclea

Voiced by: Junko Noda (Japanese)

An eccentric yet extremely skilled vanship pilot, Dio appeared at Kartoffel six months prior to the start of the series, and has stayed there ever since. A regular visitor to the Vingt household, Dio comes off as a whimsical slacker, but shows a surprising amount of insight, particularly regarding the Ades Federation's aggressive actions against its neighbors.

The Vingt Family

Voiced by: Tetsu Inada (Atamora), Takako Honda (Tereza), Nao Touyama (Félicité), Kanako Miyamoto (René), Kanae Ito (Adelle)

Giselle's family, of which Fam is an unofficial member. It is composed of family patriarch Atamora, his wife Tereza, and Giselle's three siblings: second daughter Félicité, only son René, and youngest daughter Adelle.

Atamora is the leader of the Sky Pirates of Kartoffel, which means that he's also Fam's boss during skyship hunts. Despite this, Fam often gives him lip, but he just lets this slide since she is technically family. He was once a known vanship pilot in his youth, and was even a participant in the last Grand Race before it was discontinued due to war.

Teddy

Voiced by: Chiwa Saito (Japanese)

Milia's young servant, easily-flustered Teddy is in some ways perfectly-suited to serving the demanding and headstrong younger princess, doing her bidding (mostly) without complaint. That said, one gets the feeling that Teddy would be rather be preparing tea and snacks somewhere quiet and unexciting. Alas, as long as he is under Milia's service, this wish will remain forever out of his reach.
