There are nine recurrent characters in LazyTown, all but three of them played by puppets.
Humans
- Sportacus is the hero, in the Superhero sense. He self-describes as merely 'above-average', but is several times seen performing heroic stunts that aren't so much above-average as superhuman, if less spectacularly so than most superheroes. This may or may not be the result of being an elf, elves being a much bigger part of Icelandic culture than English-speaking, but this is ambiguous in the English dub. He has an unambiguously magical crystal that beeps and flashes to warn him somebody is in trouble or about to be. His Kryptonite Factor is sugar; eating any sugary food renders him immediately comatose, and fresh fruit or vegetables are required to restore him. He appears to be tenth in a line of heroes that stretch back at least as far as the age of sail. Possibly a Marty Stu (not only near-perfect, but played by his creator).
- Lightning Bruiser: Although since the show is aimed at pre-teens he never actually engages in violence.
- Pink Girl, Blue Boy: with Stephanie.
- Weaksauce Weakness: he is crippled by eating chocolate, but can regain power by eating healthy foods.
- Stephanie is the heroine, in the 'female lead' sense. She is eight, with a pink bob and a tendency to wear almost nothing but pink, with the occasional bit of red, purple or aqua. Bright, bouncy, cheerful, and a frequent dispenser of the episode's Aesop, she is closer to a realistic role-model to the intended audience than Sportacus, who despite condoning the occasional eating of cake and other sweetened foods, can't do so himself. Officially, her character weakness is looking for the easy way out occasionally (ie when the plot demands). She is played as the Naive Newcomer in the Welcome Episode, and although the role was only needed that one episode because of the simple premise, she is pitched as such in the Expository Theme Tune.
- Cheerful Child
- Dawson Casting: She is eight, Juliana Rose Mauriello started the role at thirteen. She got older, Stephanie never did.
- Naive Everygirl
- The Other Darrin: When Juliana Rose Mauriello reached her twenties, Chloe Lourenco Lang took over the role.
- Pink Girl, Blue Boy: with Sportacus.
- Rose-Haired Girl
- Robbie Rotten is the villain, in the Dr Drakken sense of the word. As such, despite being the only villain is more-or-less an Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain. He lives underground on the edge of town, and is lazy, finds vegetables disgusting, and finds the noise of the children playing disturbing. Most episodes centre on a plot to get rid of Sportacus and/or get the town to return to its former laziness, which near-inevitably require costumes. They are also so convoluted that he may be one of the most active people in LazyTown (Lampshaded once).
- Dick Dastardly Stops to Cheat: Happens to him a lot.
- Harmless Villain
- Irony: Arguably, his schemes often cause him to be the most active person in town.
- Laughably Evil
- Master of Disguise: He's even got a song about it!
- Paper-Thin Disguise: Sometimes
Puppets
- Mayor Milford Meanswell is Stephanie's uncle, the reason she is in LazyTown. He is ineffectual and clumsy, but extremely affable. He harbours a crush on Ms. Bessie Busybody that is played as comedy, and despite appearing requited has yet to result in a visible romantic relationship, instead appearing as a number of Almost Kisses, some of which have been stopped by things as silly as Bessie getting distracted by Stephanie dancing.
- Adorkable
- Meaningful Name: he means well.
- Ms. Bessie Busybody is officially Mayor Meanswell's secretary, though she is only seen performing her duties a few times in canon. Gossip is her official character weakness.
- Ziggy is six, very friendly, cute as a button and rather impulsive. His official character weakness is candy, and very rarely seen without an enormous lollipop. Even in bed. Because he consumes so much candy, he is often on a sugar high, and thus extremely hyperactive.
- Stingy is a miser, son of the richest man in town, who treats everything as if it belongs to him. Including ladders the mayor happens to be up. Usually, his kleptomania is played for laughs, except in one very early episode where he finds Sportacus's crystal and doesn't give it back immediately, which was treated as a very serious transgression indeed. He has a piggy bank that he carts everywhere and treats like a teddy bear.
- Trixie is a trickster, tomboy and thrill-seeker who has issues with obedience. She shows up less frequently than Ziggy and Stingy, despite theoretically being Stephanie's best friend. She's also Asian, making her a Twofer Token Minority.
- Pixel is a mouse potato, games addict and computer genius. He usually only shows up in episodes where his personal traits are needed for the plot. Oh, and he's black.
