Legend of the Dragon

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Twins Ang and Ling are both in line to becoming the new Golden Dragon, but when Ang is chosen as Dragon Temple Guardian instead of her, Ling becomes jealous and confused which leads her to join the dark side (known as Ying), become the Shadow Dragon, team up with the evil Zodiac Master (who wants to steal all the power bands of the Zodiac to become all powerful) to steal Ang's powerband and become the new Golden Dragon. Ang must team up with the Tiger Temple Guardian Beingal, his Mentor; Master Chin, and the Monkey Temple Guardian Xuan Chi to defeat the Zodiac Master and bring his sister Ling back to the side of good (known as Yang).

Legend of the Dragon is an animated series consisting of 26 episodes followed by 13 additional episodes for a total of 39 episodes. It is produced by BKN and premiered in October 2006 as part of the Jetix block on Toon Disney. Subsequently, the two part episode "Trial by Fire" was shown as a Jetix Blockbuster on ABC Family in August before all Jetix programming moved to Toon Disney.

In the UK, the first 26 episodes have aired across CBBC. It premiered in Summer 2005 on the CBBC channel. It is unclear of whether the additional 13 episodes will be shown or not. Episodes 27?39 have begun airing in Australia on Network Ten's Toasted TV as of March 19, 2008.

Is notable for shoddy animation, surprisingly implicit Brother-Sister Incest and a Cliff Hanger ending.

Not to be confused with Legend of Dragoon.

For those who would like to see some parts of the episodes, you can find them here.

Tropes used in Legend of the Dragon include:
  • Action Girl (Ling tries to be this)
  • Amusing Injuries
  • Amnesiac Dissonance (Ang struggles with this whilst Ling and Zodiac Master try to convince him otherwise)
  • Anti-Hero: Ling in season 2 is very much Type 2. See the Sliding Scale of Anti-Heroes.
  • Anti-Villain: Ling in season 1 is strongly Type 1 with a small bit of Type 2 mixed in. See the Sliding Scale of Anti-Villains.
  • Applied Phlebotinum (The powerbands)
  • Arrogant Kung Fu Girl: Ling.
  • Art Shift: The second season. The three main characters now have Shiny Midnight Black hair and CGI is especially obvious in some scenes. Just look at the combined form of both Yin Wi and the Emperor in the final episode
  • Badass Grandpa: Master Chin.
  • Big Bad (Zodiac Master season 1, Emperor of the Darkest Yin in season 2)
  • Big Brother Instinct: Hoo boy, Ang definitely has this when it comes to Ling. He does not approve of Ling having feelings for K-Ho. She is actually a better fighter than Ang in some ways. Of course, she is wild and impulsive, so it is understandable he would act protective towards her.
  • Big No: Ling does this a couple of times. The first time is when Ling defeats Beingal, yells "No!", and saves Beingal from falling to her death. The second time is when Ling is given the chance to kill her own brother. She fires a blast inches from his head and screams out "NO!"
  • Brother-Sister Incest (Unintentional, but often Ang's behaviour towards Ling strongly suggests the trope on his side at least. Season 2 has Yin Wi and the Emperor.)
    • It is doubtful that Ang has such feelings toward Ling. For starters, Ang is such a Chaste Hero that the idea of Ang feeling for Ling that way would be very unlikely. For another thing, he is simply concerned about his sister and is acting like a protective older brother (note that the show does not say which one was born first). Could you blame him, considering how impulsive and reckless Ling acts at times?
  • Brother-Sister Team (As of season 2)
  • Cain and Abel (prior to season 2)
  • Calling Your Power-Up: Temple Guardians must say "Empower the X" while holding their powerbands. For Shadow Temple Guardians, they must say "Empower the Shadow X" while holding their powerbands.
  • Catgirl (Biengal)
  • Chaste Hero (Ang barely notices Beingal's crush on him)
  • The Dragon (Ling in Season 1 to the Zodiac Master, Yin Wi to the Emperor in Season 2)
  • Dark Action Girl (Yin Wi)
    • Ling tried to be this in season 1. It did not work.
  • Deadpan Snarker (Ling, Beingal)
  • Eastern Zodiac (the plot is based on this)
  • Face Heel Turn: Ling does this in the second episode. It only lasts until the end of season 1.
  • Faux Action Girl (Beingal is this in the second season, despite earlier fight competence in the first season)
  • Foot Focus / Does Not Like Shoes (Beingal and Xuan Chi are always barefoot)
  • Good Is Sexy: Ling, when she goes back to the Yang (i.e. Good or Light) side. Here's proof and some more proof.
  • Guile Hero Master Chin, to those who don't see him as a minor Magnificent Bastard.
  • Guilty Pleasures
  • Heel Face Turn (Ling in season 1 finale and as of season 2)
  • Hey, It's That Voice!: Alan Marriott voices Ang, and Gary Martin voices Emperor of the Darkest Yin. If anyone knows who voiced the other characters, please step forward!
  • If You're So Evil Eat This Kitten: In the season 1 finale, Ling has Ang at her mercy. Master Chin tells her that if she wants Ang's powerband, she has to kill her own brother. She does not go through with it. Then the trope is subverted when it turns out that Master Chin did not want her to do it, and that he was testing her to see if she truly valued power more than her own brother's life.
    • In the season 1 finale, the Emperor of the Darkest Yin tells Ling to kill her brother Ang. Fortunately, she does not.
  • Improbable Age (do Ang or Ling really look 15 to you?)
  • Jerkass: Ling starts out like this in the first episode. She pulls a Face Heel Turn in the second episode. She gets better.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Almost every character wears the same clothes throughout the show - and has the same look in their empowered forms. The few exceptions are the Zodiac Master, who wore a grey outfit at one point in season 1 and Ling, who gained a Golden Dragon look to replace her Shadow Dragon look in the season 1 finale. It is actually funny to see Beingal and Ling shopping and buying clothes at some points in the show.
  • Loads and Loads of Characters
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: In the first episode, the Golden Dragon is stated to have died and gone on to the afterlife. It is later revealed in season 1 that the Golden Dragon mentioned in the first episode was the father of Ang and Ling. Even later it is revealed in season 1 that their mother is the Guardian of the Ram Temple, she is still alive, and she lost her memory. By the way, Master Chin knew all this and did not tell Ang and Ling. Why? Because he wanted them to find out on their own.
  • Martial Pacifist: Ang.
  • Mask Power
  • Master of Disguise: The Golden Temple Rat Guardian.
  • Morality Pet: This trope is definitely played with. Ling could have killed Beingal at one point, but she did not. Why? Because they were friends - and still are, really. Ling also loves animals, and will never harm an innocent animal. All this goes a long way to showing that Ling cannot be all bad - especially in season 1.
  • Oblivious to Love: Poor Ling. K-ho seems determined to ignore her advances. Quote: "Business before pleasure, Ling!" is almost a catchphrase of his.
    • Well, he is a lone wolf in more than one sense of the term. He is probably just not used to having someone else being around him.
  • Old Master (Master Chin)
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: You may think from looking at the picture on this page that Ling is the blue Oni and Ang is the red Oni. However, in terms of personalities, Ling is the red Oni and Ang is the blue Oni.
  • Refused by the Call
  • Rick Ungar
  • The Chick: Beingal is arguably this. She is friends with Ang and Ling. This fact prevented Ling from killing Beingal, even though Ling did not want to admit it. She is also the one who acts as the mediator between Ang and Ling in season 2 and in the very first episode of season 1. Not to mention the Beingal seems to act as a moderating influence on Ling.
  • The Hero: Ang is placed into this role, even though he did not want it. Ironically, Ling wanted the role very badly, but she did not get it because she does not quite have the temperament needed for the role.
  • The Lancer: Ling takes on this role in season 2. It suits her.
  • The Scrappy: Xuan Chi.
  • Secret Test of Character: By the season 1 finale, Master Chin pretty much reveals that he had put Ling through one very long test of this kind to see if Ling truly deserved to be a Golden Dragon. Fortunately, Ling managed to pass this test.
  • Serious Business (losing your powerband is the worst that could happen to a guardian as Xuan Chi shows)
  • Sibling Yin-Yang (obviously)
  • Spoiler Opening: The opening of the first episode completely ruins the surprise. The pictures that accompany it don't help either...
  • Smug Snake: Zodiac Master is this, literally and figuratively. He is relatively clever, but his ego overrides it. That likely explains how he can have three powerbands and still lose to Ang (who only has his Dragon powerband). Also, he was born in the Year of the Snake, and has a pet snake named King Cobra, who acts as a spy for Zodiac Master. Is he beginning to remind you of Voldemort from Harry Potter?
  • Stock Footage (the powerups)
  • Tagalong Kid: Xuan Chi seems to be in this role. He is the only character without a powerband. He acts mostly as comic relief. At the start of season 2, he gets turned into an actual monkey. This would probably make him the Team Pet.
  • Taking the Bullet: In the first episode of season 2, Emperor of the Darkest Yin fires two energy blasts at Ang and Ling. Beingal jumps to intercept the blasts. However, Xuan Chi ends up taking the two hits. He is not killed by this, but he is transformed into an actual monkey.
  • Team Pet: Xuan Chi is literally transformed into this in season 2.
  • Theme Naming (Ang-Yang, Ling-Ying. The Tiger Guardian being Biengal probably qualifies as well.)
  • Wham! Episode: The first episode of season 2. Emperor of the Darkest Yin attacks the Temple of the Golden Dragon, successfully blowing it to smithereens. The Zodiac Master ceases to be a problem. Xuan Chi gets zapped and turns into a real monkey as a result. Ang and Ling are left wondering what they are going to do when their powerbands are not fully charged up, and they lost the Temple (the place that can recharge their powerbands).
