Leisure Suit Larry/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Leisure Suit Larry: In the Land of the Lounge Lizards

  • Accidental Innuendo: The VGA version has a device driver with the name "STD". While it has this in common with all Sierra games, its use in this particular one makes it a very accidental innuendo indeed.
  • Porting Disaster: The iOS port of Reloaded has an Epic Fail on iPhone 6, where BGMs do not play at all, along with other glitches. It also cuts out the Easter Egg of turning off the bubbles to see Eve's breasts.
  • What Do You Mean Its Not Symbolic: To win the game, you give Eve an apple to seduce her. Subtle.

Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Don't Dry

  • Author's Saving Throw: After the mixed reception of Larry's new voice, the devs announced that Larry's lines would be re-recorded by Jan Rabson, Larry's original voice actor.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Quite a few fans has expressed dissatisfaction with Larry's redesign, criticizing it for being too young, too lanky, and overall too normal-looking compared to his more cartoony and exaggerated design in previous games. The developers have defended the design as an attempt to return Larry to his design from the first three games, where he was of a more normally proportioned human build.
    • The loss of an external narrator was also criticized, as the interactions between him and Larry are a series staple.

Other YMMV

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Jeffrey Tambor voicing a womanizer like Larry in Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust becomes this after he was accused of sexual assault by several women.
  • Rated "M" for Money
  • Replacement Scrappy: Many fans feel that Larry Lovage is an inferior substitute to his uncle Larry Gaffer.
  • Seinfeld Is Unfunny: Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude and Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust weren't successful because the new format and advanced graphics made Larry far too realistic, making him as funny as any other degenerate pervert. As in, not at all.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: At least one reviewer felt that the conversations in Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude are genuinely amusing, and then proceeded to lament that you cannot actually pay attention to them as you need to play the minigame to keep them going.
  • Shipping Bed Death: Lowe invented the "Leisure Suit Larry 4" running gag as a way to escape this and other problems caused by the end of Leisure Suit Larry III: Passionate Patti in Pursuit of the Pulsating Pectorals.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks: The last two games are much less subtle in their sexual humor, include less adventure elements, more mini-games and the latter installment uses Grand Theft Auto-based gameplay.
    • Al Lowe described Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude as "like getting a videotape from your son's kidnapper; on the one hand, you're glad he's still alive, but on the other, my God, look what they've done to him!".
    • Even before that, Leisure Suit Larry 2 caught flak for having much less sexual content than the first game, and Leisure Suit Larry 5: Passionate Patti Does a Little Undercover Work was derided for being much easier than the previous games, with no chances to die or make the game Unwinnable, and it's possible to beat the game as normal without doing much at all.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Leisure Suit Larry 2 only has Larry on a cruise ship for long enough to escape his Lena Hyena roommate. Leisure Suit Larry 7: Love for Sail! revisits this general setting to give it the attention it deserves.
  • Unfortunate Implications: In Leisure Suit Larry 5: Passionate Patti Does a Little Undercover Work, Patti dons Blackface with toner in order to sneak into a rap studio.
    • Larry "turning" Ione lesbian.
