< Lupin III‎ | Recap‎ | S1

The Coming of Goemon The Thirteenth[1] is the third episode of the first TV anime adaptation of Lupin III.

Lupin and Jigen witness a demonstration of Goemon's razor-sharp samurai sword, said to be forged from legendary swords like Kotetsu, Yoshikane and Masamune. However, Goemon plans to use the sword to assassinate Lupin. After Lupin and Jigen narrowly escape with their lives, they learn that Momochi, the legendary "Reaper of Iga" who has killed over 5,000 people in his 50-year-long career, was Goemon's teacher and ordered the assassination on him. And when Fujiko (Goemon's "girlfriend" in this episode) starts to stir things up even more...

Tropes

  • Adaptation Distillation: The first half of the episode (up to Goemon and Lupin getting burned) is a close adaptation of the original manga chapter that first introduced Goemon Ishikawa XIII. The only thing left out is the hitman Lupin killed to save Goemon's hide.
  • Bandage Mummy: Lupin, after narrowly escaping from Goemon, because his experimental new weapon (a flask filled with highly-volatile rocket fuel) backfired.
  • Early Installment Weirdness: This episode was made back when Goemon was still established as "just another assassin" instead of an ally to Lupin.
  1. Japanese title: 十三代五ェ門登場 (Juusan-dai Goemon Toujou)
