  • Fan Dumb: This article explains, at great length, that not only are the people who don't like M Night stupid and only hate him because it's cool, but even his fans are stupid because they like his movies for the wrong reasons and don't appreciate his genius properly.
  • Hype Backlash: Critics and fans of The Sixth Sense lauding him as the next Alfred Hitchcock after his first film[1] just raised everybody's expectations too high.
  • Memetic Mutation: What a tweest!
  • Misaimed Marketing: His movies would probably do a lot better if they were advertised as character-driven dramas instead of horror movies with a twist.
  • Take That: When David Cronenberg was asked about the "obvious influence" of Shyamalan on A History of Violence, Cronenberg simply responded "I HATE that guy! Next question."
  • Tough Act to Follow: The Sixth Sense, evidenced by the fact that each subsequent film of his has gotten progressively worse reviews.
  • Vindicated By Video: Unbreakable is becoming a classic in terms of its deconstruction of the origin story of the Superhero and arguably has probably held up the best. Since it came out before the latest comic book movie craze, it didn't really mean much to people who didn't read superhero comics. It helped that it got two sequels in the late 2010s.
  1. Actually his third film, but nobody remembers Praying With Anger or Wide Awake
