Mahabharata/Fanfic Recs

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

A word of precaution before we start. Mahabharata is old. It has been copied and altered throughout generations, and some of those copies (of which we would have defined them as fanfics if they are written in the modern times) has became revered epics themselves. Please limit yourself to non-profit, non-professional fanwork derivatives of Mahabharata floating around on the internets. DO NOT list commercial productions, abridged editions and translations, or historical documents here, for they are many.

In any case, proof that the remaining 10% is worth turning against your siblings here.

These are recommendations made by Tropers for Mahabharata fanfics, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. Feel free to add a fanfic of your own to the list, but remember to use the template found here.

You can also add to the current recommendations if you want. Refrain from posting Conversation in the Main Page though; that goes in the discussion page. No-name recommendations will be Zapped (wiki). Nobody would back up the rec. Discussion of the recommendation is welcome on the discussion page. As such discussion is important, do remember to add the discussion page to the watchlist, if need be.

Do warn when a fanfic may head into non-canon territory. Some people just don't like it, and as we all know, Shipping is Serious Business. Like, religiously serious.

Mahabharata Story by Nenena

  • Recommended by Gunbazca
  • Status: possibly Discontinued, there has been no updates for over a year now.
  • Synopsis: In the author's own words, "A science fiction reimagining of the Mahabharata." That is to say, Mahabharata IN SPACE!
  • Comments: In case you have yet to read the summary, this is heavy Alternate Universe. A comparatively massive piece of reading in fanfiction.net, this reimagination of Mahabharata is clocked at just over 327 thousand words long. It also mixes and meshes old, time-tried epic tropes with modern sci-fi conventions one would not find out-of-place in Star Wars. Here, devastras will go side-by-side with intergalactic travel; characters interaction in a completely different yet familiar way; medical technology explaining what magical mantras do; and many more. And let me tell you, it is awesome.
