Main Khiladi Tu Anari

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.
We are straight as a doorbell!

A Bombay police officer seeks revenge when his brother is killed by a powerful underworld figure. Things get complicated when a matinee movie idol begins to tag along the policeman so he can research a movie role.

The second installment of the famous Khiladi franchise. Starring Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan and Shilpa Shetty in pivotal roles, the film is chiefly known for a male friendship that ends up looking like... something else. Just watch this. And laugh.

Tropes used in Main Khiladi Tu Anari include:
  • Foreign Remake: inspired by The Hard Way, starring Michael J. Fox and James Woods.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Saif Ali Khan was relatively new to films when he made this, but later in his career he found himself typecasted as a sappy loverboy and set out to break into Darker and Edgier roles. This is pretty much the exact situation his MKTA character is in.
  • Narm Charm: pretty much the entire movie, barring the intentional comedy.
  • Romance on the Set: Akshay Kumar and Shilpa Shetty are reputed to have started dating during the filming. Then they drifted apart and got back together while making another film together.
  • Roundhouse Kick: Akshay Kumar likes to inflict these on the baddies.
  • Shout-Out: Shilpa's character is named Basanti, after Hema Malini's character in Sholay, and her introductory scene is inspired by Hema's character in Seeta Aur Geeta.
  • Slow Motion: heavily abused in the action scenes.
  • Unnecessary Combat Roll: Akshay Kumar also does this frequently in the action scenes.
  • Values Dissonance: Saif's and Shilpa's characters conspire to drug Akshay's character up and convince him that he took advantage of Shilpa during a drunken episode he can't remember. This is an attempt to get him to acknowledge his feelings for Shilpa, and lighten up about Saif dating Akshay's sister. It is successful on both counts. Fans of the film usually let the more popular Saif off the hook for his involvement in this gag, while coming down hard on the less-respected Akshay and Shilpa, and castigating Akshay's character for an equally nasty prank where he frames Saif for a fake murder to get the guy out of his hair for a while.
